Function and Description
Feature

Basic functions ● Amplifies the power of the received optical signals in the
C-band. This board supports wavelengths within the
range of 1529 nm to 1561 nm.
● Supports service transmission with varying fiber spans
without using electrical regeneration.

Light sensor (LS) ● The IN and OUT ports detect and report multiplexed-
wavelength optical power.
● The OUT port detects the single-wavelength wavelength
and single-wavelength optical power of an OTU board
with the LS function at the source end.
● The board works with the OD license. After the OD
function is configured, the board supports OSNR
detection for single-wavelength signals of an OTU board
with the LS function at the source end.

Module TN52OACE101/TN52OACE105/TN52OACE106/
TN52OACE107/TN52OACE108.

Gain adjustment TN52OACE101: Continually adjusts the gain from 20 dB to

31 dB based on the input signal power
TN52OACE105: Continually adjusts the gain from 23 dB to
32 dB based on the input signal power
TN52OACE106: Continually adjusts the gain from 13 dB to
23 dB based on the input signal power.
TN52OACE107: Continually adjusts the gain from 17 dB to
25 dB based on the input signal power.
TN52OACE108: Continually adjusts the gain from 8 dB to
14 dB based on the input signal power.

In-service optical Each optical amplifier unit provides an in-service

performance monitoring port. This port connects to an optical spectrum
monitoring analyzer or spectrum analyzer unit to monitor the signal
power performance without affecting traffic.

Gain locking The EDFA has the gain locking function. When this function
is enabled, adding or dropping one or more channels or
signal power fluctuation inside some channels does not
affect the signal gain of other channels.

Working mode In the gain locking mode, the gain of the board is tunable
and the user can query the actual gain of the board.

Transient state The EDFA inside the board has the transient state control
control function. When channels are added or dropped, the board
can suppress the power fluctuation inside the signal
channels to support smooth upgrades and expansions.

24.3.4 Functions and Features

The main functions and features supported by the OBU are optical signal
amplification, online optical performance monitoring, gain locking function, and
alarm and performance events monitoring.

For details about the functions and features, see Table 24-28.

Table 24-28 Functions and features of the OBU

Functions and
Features Description

Basic function Simultaneously amplifies optical signals on a maximum

of 80 channels with 50 GHz channel spacing in the C
band.
Features a small noise figure.

Nominal Gain The nominal gain is 23 dB.

NOTE
The nominal gain of the OBU board is 23 dB. The actual gain
includes the noise, and the value is larger than that of the
nominal gain.

Gain lock function Supports automatic gain control. Adding or deleting

channels has no impact on online services.

Transient control When channels are added or dropped, the unit can
function suppress the fluctuation of the optical power in the path
to achieve a smooth upgrade and expansion.

Online optical The MON port is provided for online performance

performance monitoring. A small volume of optical signals is output at
monitoring the optical port to the optical spectrum analyzer or
spectrum analysis board. The optical spectrum analyzer or
spectrum analysis board monitors the multiplexed optical
signals and optical performance without interrupting
services.

Automatic When no light is received, the board automatically shuts

shutdown of output down the laser on the transmit end of the EDFA module
optical power to prevent damages to human body.

24.3.5 Working Principle and Signal Flow

The OBU board consists of five parts: the EDFA optical module, the drive and
detection module, the variable optical attenuator, the communication module, and
the power supply module.
Figure 24-10 shows the functional block diagram of the OBU board.

OptiX OSN 1800
Hardware Description 24 Optical Amplifying Board

Figure 24-10 Functional block diagram of the OBU board

NOTE

An EVOA is used to adjust signal optical power. You can either attach the EVOA to the OUT
optical port to adjust the transmit optical power of this board or attach the EVOA to the IN
optical port to adjust the receive optical power of this board. Variable optical attenuators
are optional for the TNF1OBU board but internally equipped in the TNF2OBU board.

Signal Flow
One multiplexed optical signal received through the IN port is input to the
erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) optical module. The EDFA optical module
amplifies the optical power of the signal and locks the gain of the signal. Then,
the amplified multiplexed signal is output through the OUT port
The multiplexed signal can also be input from the VI optical port, and output from
the VO optical port after the optical power is adjusted, and then received by the
IN optical port.

Functional Modules
● EDFA optical module
– Multiplexed signal light and pump light enter the erbium-doped fiber for
amplification. The erbium-doped fiber that is excited by the pump laser
can amplify the optical signal to implement the optical power
amplification function.
– The optical splitter splits some optical signals from the main optical path
and provides them to the MON port for detection.

OptiX OSN 1800
Hardware Description 24 Optical Amplifying Board

● Drive and detection module

– Detects the optical power of service signals in real time.
– Detects the drive current, back facet current, cooling current, and
operating temperature and ambient temperature of the pump laser inside
the EDFA optical module in real time.
– Drives the pump laser inside the EDFA optical module.
– Reports alarms and performance events to the communication module.
● Variable optical attenuator
– Adjust the transmit or receive optical power.
– After the TNF1OBU board is powered on, the default attenuation of the
EVOA retains the maximum value 20 dB, ensuring that the board is not
overloaded.
– After the TNF2OBU board is powered on, the default attenuation of the
EVOA retains the value 17 dB.
● Communication module
– Collects the information of alarms, performance events, and working
states of each functional module of the unit.
– Communicates with the system control, switching, and timing board, to
control and operate on each module of the unit.
● Power module
– Converts the DC power into the power required by each module of the
unit.

Rated Optical -30 to 30 The Rated Optical Power

Power(dBm) (dBm) parameter provides an
option to set and query the
per-channel rated optical
power. It is a reference value
for automatic adjustment of
the optical power. When the
optical amplifier unit and
ROADM unit are used in a
network, this parameter is
available for the optical
amplifier unit.
The rated input and output
optical power should be
configured according to the
actual configurable input and
output range of the optical
amplifier unit and should be
the same as the input and
output values measured when
the optical amplifier unit runs
normally.
When the automatic
adjustment of the optical
power is enabled, this
parameter affects the budget
of the optical power on the
optical channel of the system.
