Introduction
As we know, culture is a way of life of a group of people; the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that
they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and
imitation from one generation to the next.

Within culture, there are other concepts that are important to know. We will see more of these
concepts in this essay.
Characteristics of culture
There are different characteristics of culture.

 Culture includes material objects. Objects like pieces or art, monuments.

 Culture Includes Attitudes, Values, and Knowledge. We share believes, knowledge, values and
attitudes. It is all thanks to culture that we are able to connect to each other and live in
harmony.
 Culture is a Way of Life. It is a design of life. Culture influences in our way of living. We are part
of culture, all of us.
 Culture is abstract. This means it exists in our minds, and it cannot be seen, maybe only by our
behavior.
 Culture is Continually Changing.
 Culture is Dynamic.
 Culture is Gratifying.
 Culture is Idealistic. This means culture is what we strive for. What we consider ideal, our
behavior, knowledge, etc.
 Culture is Integrated.
 Culture is learned behavior. It is overt behavior, very different from covert behavior.
 Culture is shared by the Members of Society. This means that culture is not a private thing;
thousands or even millions of people share it. We share patterns in our behavior.
 Culture Varies from Society to Society.
 Language is the Chief Vehicle of Culture.

Enculturation
Enculturation is acquiring culture. It is highly related to socialization.

Enculturation is the process whereby individuals learn their group’s culture through experience,
observation, and instruction. This is why it is related with socialization. We learn with our senses, talking
to others, observing them, etc. It is both a conscious and an unconscious conditioning process whereby
man, as child and adult, achieves competence in his culture, internalizes his culture and becomes
thoroughly enculturated.

It is the process, beginning in early childhood, by which particular cultural values, ideas, beliefs, and
behavioral patterns are instilled in the members of a society.

Interculturation
It can be defined as occurring between or involving two or more cultures. Intercultural describes
communities in which there is a deep understanding and respect for all cultures. Intercultural
communication focuses on the mutual exchange of ideas and cultural norms and the development of
deep relationships. In an intercultural society, no one is left unchanged because everyone learns from
one another and grows together.

Transculturation
Transculturation is a process of cultural transformation marked by the influence of new culture
elements and the loss or alteration of existing ones.

Transculturation is very common nowadays. It makes the individuals forget about their own unique
culture, even thinking the other culture is better.

It can also be defined as "seeing oneself in the other". It has become an issue.
Conclusion
Culture possesses many different characteristics that define it as it is.

Culture is always changing. Culture is organic. Culture is abstract. In addition, some other things.

We have enculturation, which is the process in which we acquire culture. Now, this is a very interesting
process. The human mind learns about culture by senses, especially observing what is going on in the
surroundings.

Within enculturation, we have two other concepts: interculturation and transculturation. Those two
terms seem to be very similar, but the first one is usually positive. In the other hand, transculturation
only helps individuals losing their own culture.
