What I Need to Know

Welcome to this module on “Visualizing, representing, and

dividing a whole into halves and fourths and identifying ½ and ¼ of a
whole object”.

This module is intended to help you, learners, understand and

master the concept of halves and fourths. It is designed to equip you
with essential knowledge and skills that you can apply to solve
problems in real life situations.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

This module contains several lessons. To make the most out of

them, you need to do the following:
1. Scan the list of Learning Objectives to get an idea of the knowledge
and skills you are expected to gain and develop as you study the
module. These outcomes are based on the content standards,
performance standards, and learning competencies of the K to 12
Curriculum Mathematics 1.
2. Take the What I Know. Your score will determine your knowledge
of the lessons in the module. If you get 100% of the items correctly,
you may proceed to the next module. Otherwise, you must go through
the lessons.
3. Each lesson aims to develop one of the learning objectives set for
the module. It starts with an activity that will help you understand the
lesson and meet the required competencies.
4. Take your time in reading this module. Write down points for
clarification. You may discuss these points with your teacher.

2
5. Perform all activities and answer all worksheets. The activities and
assessments are designed to enhance your understanding of sets. The
activities will also give you an idea how well you understood the
lessons. Review the lessons if necessary, until you have achieved a
satisfactory level of understanding.
6. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate
your overall understanding about the lessons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
a. visualize a whole into halves and fourths,
b. represent a whole into halves and fourths,
c. divide a whole into halves and fourths, and
d. identify ½ and ¼ of a whole object.

3
What I Know

Let us determine how much you already know about one-half

(½) and one-fourth ¼ of a whole. If you got 5 correct answers well
done. If you got 0-4 correct answers, you can do better by proceeding
with the module. Write the letter of the correct answer on the space
provided before each number.

_____1. Which shapes have equal parts?

A. B. C. D.

_____2. What fraction represents one-half ?

A. B. C. D.

_____3. Which shape is divided into 4 equal parts ?

A. B. C. D.

_____4. Which figure shows ?

A. B. C. D.

_____5. Which figure shows ?

A. B. C. D.
What’s In

4
In our previous lesson, we learned about visualizing,
representing, and separating objects into groups of equal quantity
using concrete objects.

Example: 2 equal quantities

4 equal quantities
A. Let us separate the set in the box into 2 equal quantities.

1. 8 potatoes
1.

2. 18 mangoes

B. Let us separate the set of 24 strawberries in the box into 4 equal

quantities.

5
What’s New

Problem 1:
Grail bought biko for her 2 children. She divided the biko into 2
slices of the same size. What part did each child received?

Solution:

1 Whole biko

Divided into 2 equal parts

Each part is called one-half

Answer: Each child received one-half of biko.

Problem 2:
Juliet baked a pineapple pie for her younger siblings. She sliced
it into 4 equal parts and gave it to them. What part was given to each
of her siblings.
6
Solution:

1 whole of pineapple pie

Divided into 4 equal parts

Each part is called one-fourth

Answer: Each sibling received one-fourth of the pie.

What is It

Fraction
A fraction shows the parts of a whole or a set divided into 2 or
more equal parts e.g. one-half and one fourth.

7
One-Half
Look at how the biko was divided.

refer to one part of a whole

means a whole was
divided into two equal parts

The biko is cut into 2 equal parts. The two parts have the same
size. Each part is called one-half . One half is written as .

One-Fourth
Look at how the pineapple pie was divided

refer to one part of a whole

means a whole was
divided into four equal parts

The pineapple was divided into 4 equal parts. The parts have the
same sizes. Each part is called one-fourth and it is written as .

What’s More

Activity 1. Visualizing
A. Encircle the shape that shows one-half.

1.

2.

B. Encircle the shape that shows one-fourth.

8
1.

2.

Assessment 1. Find the missing part of the shape at Column A to

Column B. Draw a line to connect them.

A B

1. a.

2. b.

3. c.
Activity 2. Representing
Encircle the fraction shown by the shaded parts of the shape.

1.

2.

3.

Assessment 2.

9
Write the fraction for shaded part of each figure.

1. _____________ 2. ____________ 3. ____________

4. _____________ 5. ____________

Activity 3. Dividing

A. Do the activity:
1. Get a rectangular paper.

2. Fold the paper into two equally.

3. Color the half of a paper and write on it.

B. Do the activity:
1. Prepare a rectangular paper.

2. Fold the paper into four equally.

2. Fo ld t h e p a p e r in t o fo u r e q u a lly.

3. C o lo r o n e -fo u rt h o f th e p a pe r

3. Color one-fourth of the paper

then write on it.
Assessment 3.

10
A. Draw a What I Have Learned line to
make two equal
parts in the
rectangle then color of it.

B. Draw lines to make four equal parts in the square then color of
it.

Fraction Sort: Cut the shape following the broken lines and paste
them to the fraction box they belong.
