MAKING PLOYURETHANE RAW MATERIALS FROM OLD BOTTLES

Plastics producers have attempted to boost the sustainability of polyurethanes with
greener inputs, such as polios derived from soybean oil. The company just opened a plant in
Taiwan that makes its Tirol aromatic polyester polios from postconsumer PET bottles. Huntsman
started operating the first in Houston in 2013, where it says it has since consumed the equivalent of
5 billion PET bottles. At these plants, Huntsman starts with a glycol sis-like process that breaks
down the PET into shorter-chain oligomers.

Huntsman reengineers the oligomers to build up desirable molecular weights, functionalizes the
polymer backbones, and combines the resulting aromatic polyester polios with other polios to get
desired properties for various applications. Avnet Muick, Huntsman’s global vice president of
polyurethane technology and innovation, says the final polios the firm is making now have 30–40%
recycled content. Huntsman can boost the total post consumer content number to 60%, he says.
Huntsman doesn’t pick up the bottles curb side and process them itself.

Aromatic polyester polios impart rigidity, insulation properties, and fire performance to
polyurethane foams, Muick says, making them a good fit for insulation board and spray foam
insulation for construction applications. This is in contrast to polyether polios, which are more
flexible and find themselves in applications like memory-foam mattresses. Muick calls Tirol an
example of up cycling because the recycled polymers are used in applications like insulation that
help conserve energy for many years. «When all of those things start to add up, they become a very
good sustainability story Muick says.

The recycled content appeals to industrial customers, many of which aim to include 15–20%
recycled content in their own products. «That gives us a competitive edge Muick says. Huntsman
isn’t alone in seeing the potential of recycling polymers in specialty chemicals. Resonate Materials
Group, headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan, has also been developing a glycol sis process to
convert PET into polyester polios.

Now that Huntsman has established the plant in Taiwan, its next steps include potentially building a
facility in Europe. The market, Muick says, will gobble it all up.

In the world today, people cannot live without technologies such as televisions, mobile phones,
computers and others. These technologies have slowly taken an essential part in people’s day-to-
day lives and being without them would be unimaginable for some of us. To understand
technology, one must know what it provides in terms of advantages, but also disadvantages. First,
the evolution of technology is beneficial to humans for several reasons. At the medical level,
technology can help treat more sick people and consequently save many lives and combat very
harmful viruses and bacteria.

The invention of the computer was a very important point. Communication is thus
enhanced, and companies can communicate more easily with foreign countries. Research is also
simplified. For companies, progress in implementing strategic technology trends is helping them
save time and therefore, money. Exchanges are faster especially with the internet. Sales and
purchases are now facilitated and possible worldwide. This allows businesses to buy raw materials
with discounts or at reduced prices. Similarly, global tourism has grown. Technology has also
increased the productivity of almost every industry in the world. Thanks to technology, we can
even pay with bit coins instead of using banks. The digital coin has been such a game changing
factor, that many realised that this is the right time to open a account. When observed more closely,
new things are discovered every day. Let’s take for instance when radio waves were discovered,
radio broadcasts followed suit almost immediately. The same applies to the television and
electricity. If no one had discovered that electricity could be generated, then the entertainment
industry wouldn’t be at its current stage of development.

Technology improves daily lives; allowing to move physical storage units to virtual
storage banks and more. Scientists of the time are also able to send astronauts to the moon thanks to
technology.

No one can escape from the absolute need of technology in our daily life. Every one of us is so
dependent on technology that we cannot do without them. Starting from computers to keeping
fit, we require technology at every step. Technology helps us to keep in touch with people who
are away from us. We use the telephones and computers to talk to them and even see them. Our
daily office work is also technology based. No longer do people use the pen and paper to
complete their work. We maintain our health by going to the gyms. There are machines in the
gym which help us reduce our weight and keep fit. The use of technology has made our life
comfortable. We cannot think of a life sans technology. We get to keep a lot of information in a
small device and use it when we like. Cars have also become better with the use of technology.
Thus technology is undeniably an important of our life.
Technology is an absolute need we cannot escape from, it has a very big role in
most aspects of our lives. In other words, it answers most of Mankind problems. Across
centuries technology evolves. The importance of technology is aiming for comfort of use in
whichever form it is. It always directs for easiness in life. Take the mobile technology for
example. The faster the world is moving, the more hi-end the features are offered. Laptop gets
thinner and smaller. It becomes more compact every year and offers more capabilities and top
performance. It should load a lot of stuffs in a more concise shape. That is the need. People
should not take time to think of what should be brought over a sales presentation in the southern
state since everything is already "filed" in the laptop. Also for telephone. The need to be able to
communicate anytime, anywhere, has inspired scientists to create cellular phone. And it gets
smaller and smaller. And then it has more features, more games, more entertainment, and now
offered more professional like having a computer in the pocket. And then from costly, it goes
cheaper and better and faster and become more reliable. The fact that the importance of
technology in our daily basis is undeniable has inspired scientists to make improvements from
time to time through their invented tools and devices for us to use, just to make our lives easier.
We always tend to make one step ahead. Technology can help not just with the present but also
approximating the future. It can calculate the potential profits and losses. And based on these,
we can create plans and a list of pre-cautious steps for the future of our descendants.
