- Today’s lesson will be a continuation of Related Issue 3 with a focus on sustainability. We


will go through a PowerPoint outlining important definitions and concepts that flesh out
sustainability.
- We will continue by watching several videos.
- The first two will explain the Millennium Development Goals. By understanding these goals,

students can relate sustainability to a global initiative and evaluate the policies and actions
that have already been put forth.
- The last video discusses the population increases, specifically the steep incline in the last
1000 years. It will give students a broader sense of our world and how fast our population is
increasing.
- To further exemplify population changes, we will be exploring a population simulator as a
class.
- To culminate the unit, students will work in pairs to answer the question “Is globalization the
key to sustainability? Or is globalization a barrier to sustainability?”
- Technology considerations - We will be using google forms and Jamboard for students to
hand in their responses for the culmination activity.
Students will have a firm understanding of all outcomes and the elements that contribute both
negatively and positively to sustainability. By looking at different examples of actions and

and further explain multidimensional concepts. I chose to have students work in pairs or alone
for the culmination activity to appeal to both extroverted and introverted students.

Introduction Time
Allotment

Introduction • I will begin class by handing out the quiz and having students grab a cromebook
to Lesson if they need.
• Students will begin the class by completing their chapter 11 quiz.
• Once they have completed the quiz they will enter their results into google
forms.

• They will hand in their hard copy of the quiz once it's complete.
• Once they are finished, they will make a name tag and put it on the end of their
desk.

Learning - Go through the Sustainability PowerPoint with students. Include talking points
Activity listed below:
- Prosperity - slide as is
- Industry slide - slide as is
- GDP and HDI - Between 2002 and 2005, Alberta had a GDP growth of 43%, the
highest ever for any province.
- Open HDI website so students can look at comparison data. The preliminary
data says that Canadas GDP declined by 5.1%, which is the lowest it's ever
declined. Where do you think Canada ranks for HDI as of 2020? In 2006 we
were number 6. As of 2020, we are 16th. Life expectancy 82.4, expected years
of schooling 16.2, mean years of schooling 13.4, GNI per person $48,527.
Norway is still number 1. 18 years of school and $66,494 GNI.
- GNHI - spiritual rather than economic growth
- Urbanization -Lots of benefits to moving to an urban area, faster, quicker access.
Cons, Increased cost of living, increased amount of people can strain our

- Population - Play “7 Billion” by National Geographic - Ask questions afterward

create balance in a capitalist society?
- Open simulation. Have students guess what number they think the population
will reach in 100 years.
- Millennial development goals - play videos for millennial development goals.
- Video 1 - Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) PSA - English -
Video outlines what the goals are and why they were created.
- Video 2 - 8 Millennium Development Goals: What We Met And Missed - Video
discusses the goals we hit and missed, this will be followed by a slide with a
chart explaining which ones.

Culminating
- As a culminating activity, with a partner or alone, students will answer the
