REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES
After engine start and before departure of a post-MOD 33844P8341 A321 aircraft powered by CFM
engines, a high level of vibration was reported by the crew on the pylon aft fixed fairing. The Inspection
of the pylon aft fixed fairing revealed cracks on the upper spar (at Rib 11 location and between Rib 14
and Rib 15) and center spar (between Rib 14 and Rib 15).
The affected structure is fitted on post-MOD 33844P8341 CFM aircraft. As several other post-MOD
33844P8341 aircraft were reported with cracked aft fixed fairing structures during accomplishment of
MPD task ZL 471-01, AOT A54N002-12 has been launched in Oct 2012 to secure the fleet through a
detailed inspection to be performed on aft fixed fairing upper spar (at Rib 11 location and between Rib
14 and Rib 15) and center spar on all post-mod 33844P8341 CFM Single Aisle fleet.
Production MOD 156593P14353 was introduced to increase the fatigue life of the structure of the pylon
aft fixed fairing by changing the material and thermal treatment of all aluminium sheet parts to fix this
issue.
In parallel, new hidden cracks have been reported under the rear attach fitting at Rib 15 on aircraft pre-
MOD 156593P14353. This Service Bulletin revision aims to extend the inspection to the Rib 15 area.
As MOD 156593P14353 development has not taken into account the findings at Rib 15, this MOD
cannot be considered as the terminative action due to this Service Bulletin and such this inspection has
to be extended to all aircraft post-MOD 156593P14353.
This Service Bulletin requires a repetitive detailed inspection for cracks on:
- the upper spar between Rib 14 and Rib 15 (areas 1 and 2),
- the upper spar at level of Rib 11 (area 3),

- the upper Rib 15 (area 5)
- the corner fittings at level of Rib 15 (area 6),
Depending on findings, the repair instruction R54512052 has to be performed including an inspection of
center spar between Rib 14 and Rib 15 (area 7) and lower area of Rib 11 (area 8).
This Service Bulletin cancels and supersedes AOT A54N002-12 repetitive inspection.
Accomplishment of this inspection allows ensuring the structural integrity of the fairing.
Accomplishment of Service Bulletin No. A320-54-1035 for aircraft post-MOD No. 156593P14353 and
Service Bulletin No. A320-54-1036 for aircraft pre-MOD No. 156593P14353 cancel the inspection
required in this Service Bulletin.
The Operational/Maintenance Consequences of this Service Bulletin are covered by the update of the
affected publications detailed in ’PLANNING INFORMATION’.

C. REASON
(1) History
After engine start and before departure of a post-MOD 33844P8341 A321 aircraft
powered by CFM engines, a high level of vibration was reported by the crew on the
pylon aft fixed fairing. The Inspection of the pylon aft fixed fairing revealed cracks on the
upper spar (at Rib 11 location and between Rib 14 and Rib 15) and center spar
(between Rib 14 and Rib 15).
The affected structure is fitted on post-MOD 33844P8341 CFM aircraft. As several other
post-MOD 33844P8341 aircraft were reported with cracked aft fixed fairing structures
during accomplishment of MPD task ZL 471-01, AOT A54N002-12 has been launched in
Oct 2012 to secure the fleet through a detailed inspection to be performed on aft fixed
fairing upper spar (at Rib 11 location and between Rib 14 and Rib 15) and center spar
on all post-mod 33844P8341 CFM Single Aisle fleet.
Production MOD 156593P14353 was introduced to increase the fatigue life of the
structure of the pylon aft fixed fairing by changing the material and thermal treatment of
all aluminium sheet parts to fix this issue.
In parallel, new hidden cracks have been reported under the rear attach fitting at Rib 15
on aircraft pre-MOD 156593P14353. This Service Bulletin revision aims to extend the
inspection to the Rib 15 area.

As MOD 156593P14353 development has not taken into account the findings at Rib 15,
this MOD cannot be considered as the terminative action due to this Service Bulletin and
such this inspection has to be extended to all aircraft post-MOD 156593P14353.
(2) Objective/Action
This Service Bulletin requires a repetitive detailed inspection for cracks on:
- the upper spar between Rib 14 and Rib 15 (areas 1 and 2),
- the upper Rib 15 (area 5)
- the corner fittings at level of Rib 15 (area 6),
Depending on findings, the repair instruction R54512052 has to be performed including

an inspection of center spar between Rib 14 and Rib 15 (area 7) and lower area of Rib
11 (area 8).
(3) Advantages
This Service Bulletin cancels and supersedes AOT A54N002-12 repetitive inspection.
Accomplishment of this inspection allows ensuring the structural integrity of the fairing.
Accomplishment of Service Bulletin No. A320-54-1035 for aircraft post-MOD No.

156593P14353 and Service Bulletin No. A320-54-1036 for aircraft pre-MOD No.
156593P14353 cancel the inspection required in this Service Bulletin.

The Operational/Maintenance Consequences of this Service Bulletin are covered by the

G. MANPOWER
The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the direct labor cost to
do the work. These estimates assume that the work will be done by experienced personnel,
and may need to be revised upwards to suit operator’s circumstances. The estimates do not
include the time to prepare, plan or inspect the work. Manufacture and procurement of parts
and tools, drying times for paints, sealants, etc., and general administration work are also not
included.

Task 541027-832-808-001 - Detailed Inspection of the Pylons Aft Fixed Fairing Structure
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY ALL THE WARNINGS AND ALL THE CAUTIONS
INCLUDED IN THE REFERENCED PROCEDURES.
CAUTION: ALWAYS OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW TO KEEP

ELECTRICAL WIRING IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION (ELECTRICALLY
AND MECHANICALLY SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO MAINTENANCE
WORK, REPAIRS OR MODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING,
COMPONENTS AND THE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO
THIS:
- PUT PROTECTION, SUCH AS PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHS, ETC. AS

NECESSARY ON WIRING AND COMPONENTS.
- REGULARLY REMOVE ALL SHAVINGS, UNWANTED MATERIAL AND

OTHER CONTAMINATION.
THESE PRECAUTIONS WILL DECREASE THE RISK OF CONTAMINATION

AND DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING INSTALLATION.

spar at Rib 15 and Rib 15 (areas 4 and 5) must be performed
Inspection of the Pylons Aft Fixed Fairing Structure On Bench -
Additional Work as splices installed do not allow inspection NTM
54-51-80 to be performed. Also, if the repair consists of changing a
part and restoring initial design, the inspection can be carried out on
aircraft.

AFT FIXED FAIRING.
SB Reporting status
This Service Bulletin will only be incorporated into affected customized Maintenance and Flight
Operations Products if it is duly reported to Airbus.
General information
The SB Reporting policy is published in ISI 00.00.00135. This document provides information regarding:
the SB Reporting means and benefits, the update of customized Maintenance Products and customized
Flight Operations Products.
If this Service Bulletin has an operational impact, refer to paragraph "Flight Operations Products" for
further information on the update of affected Flight Operations Products.
SB Reporting procedure
Standard practice to report SB is to use the online reporting application on AirbusWorld.
Refer to ISI 00.00.00179:

- For complete information on reporting means to Airbus. Question 2 "What are the standard
practices for SB reporting?"
- If this SB requires previous or simultaneous accomplishment of other SBs, Question 3 "What about
the reporting of prerequisite Service Bulletin?"
