Shadow workshop proposal

introduction

Shadow, one of the first images with which man came into contact, it is a physical
phenomenon that appears when a body is exposed to light. It is 2D in nature and is used to
give nuances, depth and textures generating optical games. Therefore, through this
workshop – laboratory is intended to give an account of how this optical and physical
phenomenon is an important aspect for the construction of a wider reading on reality,
enhancing esthetic sensitivity, imagination and visual narrative. It will be investigated how
and at what point in our history we realized about the shadow of our own and that of other
living beings, objects and matter, through a panel discussion that will be carried out starting
from the exercises proposed and questioning from the experience, memory and listening of
the other; generating a dynamic of participation, understanding, contrasts, etcetera…
resulting in its own reflection and in a material product.
justification

Shadow itself has become a moving image, because if we investigate man's history from
the caverns, we can see how he used it to narrate it in order to share something subjective
of human sensitivity. At this point it ceases to be a physical phenomenon to be a conceptual
phenomenon.
An important aspect of this workshop-laboratory is that as a main objective it wants this
physical and optical phenomenon called shadow, to be a sensitive experience that allows
the perception to be expanded to other esthetic dimensions. For this reason the laboratory
nature of this proposal will take into account exploration through the experience of the
senses and expression in different ways, this as a strategy to help us read the context in a
more multifaceted way.

OBJECTIVE

General objective

 To conduct a workshop – laboratory where the physical and optical

phenomenon which is the shadow is explored.

Specific objectives

 To stimulate imagination through exercises and experiences with

the shadow
 To define shadow as concept, moving image and visual narrative
through reflections together after the exercises raised.
 To recognize how shadow is part of an aesthetic sensibility about
the world
 To generate an aesthetic experience through the shadow.

Workshop- Laboratory

The workshop - laboratory consists of three exercises that can be

performed at home, in open spaces, particular places, etcetera, in the
company of himself or herself or family, friends and acquaintances. The
idea is that they do it by choosing the exercises that best suit their
circumstances and that it is crossed by a dialog in reflection in the
shadow from the experiences obtained, it is advisable to make a diary –
logbook to have a record of those. This device can be tapped as they like,
from drawings, writings, photographs, smells, sounds, everything is part
to build an experience in the memory.
Below are the three proposed exercises:

1. Draw from the shadow projection of an object

Steps:
• Identify at what time of day with sunlight we have shadow of our body or plants or
other objects.
• Take photographs of the shadow or intervene this directly with chalks or paintings if
it is a surface that we can scratch or place pieces of the paper that we choose to draw the
outline on it.
• After we have the outline of the shadow we have chosen, we will build a story about
it and finish intervening it according to the story.
• In the end we see what we produce and tell our experience

2. Analog TV from a mini-theater.

Steps:

 Get the following materials: Carton box, skewer sticks, half a sheet of waxed paper, tape,
black cardboard, scissors and a legend or myth you want to use to make a story in
shadows.

3. Game of the shadow from a candle, flashlight or light source

Steps:

 In a dark place, have a candle with its plate so we don't have accidents, flashlight or light
source
 When turning on our light source place it in front of an object and play with the closeness
and distance of it, play with our body, hands, head, hair, other objects, etcetera, mix them
in front of the light and see results.
 Take pictures of the exercise and draw what we saw, what happened to us, what we felt,
etc.
 Write a written or visual story from the experience.
