Functional Styles of the English and Ukrainian Languages
I. THEORETICAL FOCUS: prepare the following questions for discussion

1. Style of Official Documents:

a. substyles, types and genres of documents in English and Ukrainian;
b. format of the documents;
c. common and specific linguistic peculiarities (lexis, grammar) of the style of
official documents in English and Ukrainian.
2. Newspaper Style:
a. the problem of its differentiation in the system of other functional styles (why
do some scholars NOT identify this functional style?);
b. substyles, types and genres of newspaper articles in English and Ukrainian;
popular papers and quality papers;
c. structural elements of a newspaper front page (masthead, by-line, headlines,
the lead / lede, graphological means);
d. stereotypical linguistic peculiarities (lexis, grammar) of the newspaper style in
English and Ukrainian.
3. Belles-lettres Style:
a. stereotypical linguistic features of emotive prose;
b. external and internal aspects of poetry;
c. the peculiarities of drama.

examples;

PASSAGE 1.
LEASE AGREEMENT
NORTH CAROLINA ORANGE COUNTY
THIS AGREEMENT, made and entered into this 15th day of January 1998
between NORTHAMPTON ENTERPRISES, INC., hereinafter called the lessor, party of
the first part and;

hereinafter called the lessee, party of the second part.
WITNESSETH that the lessor, in consideration of the rents and covenants hereinafter
expressed, the lessor has demised and
leased and does hereby demise and lease to the said lessee the following described
premises, viz:

To have and hold same with all privileges and appurtenances belonging unto the said
lessee for and during the period of 6 months from the 15th day of January 1998 which time will
end on the 14 day of September 1998 upon the following terms and conditions.

Terms and Conditions

1) The lessee shall pay a monthly rental of $490.00 dollars, one month in advance, on the
1ST day of each and every calendar month during the term of this lease. And provided said
lessee shall fail to pay said rent or any pan thereof when it becomes due, or not later than the 5th
day of each calendar month, it is agreed that the lessor, or his duly authorized agent, may re-
enter the premises, sue for same or resort to any legal remedy. It being optional with the lessor to
cancel this lease, by a three (3) day written notice provided rent is not paid as heretofore set
forth. That there will be a late fee of S 1.00 per day for rent not paid by the 5th of the month.
2) Tenants whose rent checks are returned by the bank for "Not Sufficient Funds" more
than once will have to pay future rent in cash, by certified check or money order. There will be a
$25.00 charge for returned checks.
3) The lessee agrees not to assign or mortgage this lease, either let or underlet the whole or
part of the said premises or occupy, use or permit to be occupied by any other person. No
subletting allowed. The lessee agrees to repair and make good any damage done to furniture and
other furnishings and apartment is to be inspected when the lessee vacates same. If lessee
consists of two people, they are jointly responsible for rent and all terms of this lease. If one
leaves before the other or .defaults in the responsibility to the lessor, the other becomes totally
responsible <…>.

TRUMP UNLOADS ON WASHINGTON POST IN LATE NIGHT TWEETSTORM

(1) President Trump blasted and appeared to threaten the Washington Post in a series of
tweets Monday night, after the newspaper ran a story on his Syria policy.
(2) “The Amazon Washington Post fabricated the facts on my ending massive,
dangerous, and wasteful payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad,” Trump wrote in the first of a
three-tweet storm about the paper at around 10:30 p.m.
(3) The paper had just published a story online saying, “Cooperation with Russia
becomes central to Trump strategy in Syria.”
(4) The story said Trump’s policy “essentially carves up Syria into no-go zones for each
of the players — President Bashar al-Assad’s fight, with Russian and Iranian help, against rebels
seeking to overthrow him, and the US-led coalition’s war to destroy the Islamic State.”
(5) The article also noted that “last month, Trump ordered the shutdown of a years-long
CIA program to train and arm the anti-Assad rebels,” and recalled how Sen. John McCain of
Arizona criticized the plan.
 (6) Trump continued to decry The Washington Post as “Fake News” in a tweet saying the
paper is “being used as a lobbyist weapon against Congress to keep Politicians from looking into
Amazon no-tax monopoly?”
(7) Amazon — whose CEO, Jeff Bezos, owns The Washington Post — is seeking federal
approval of a $13.7 billion deal to buy supermarket Whole Foods.
