Attack on Titan (Season 1)

By: Penelope Mooneyham

In this essay, I will be summarizing the first season of Hajime Isayamas Attack on titan ( or
Shinigeki no Kyojin). The first season was released throughout 2013 and was vastly popular.
The season is 25 episodes long which are all around 24 minutes length. First, we will start with
the backstory then some of the main points of Eren´s training, and then onto the finale with the
fight between the female titan and Erens titan. We will begin with the backstory of the three
walls and the three regiments and titans.

The three walls, Maria, Sina, and Rose, were created to protect the cities from titans.
The titans are deformed humanoid figures that feed on humans for enjoyment. The titans range
in size from 3 meters to 120 meters ( although only one titan has ever gotten to that height).
Despite popular lore and gossip, the titans do not need to eat humans to survive it seems they
only enjoy it. In response to these titans, three regiments were formed to protect citizens. The
scout regiment (or survey corps), the military police, and the garrison regiment. The scout
regiment fights to reclaim the land that titans have stolen but also to explore the outside world
and try to find as much information as possible, in emergency situations they will protect
civilians from outside forces trying to break in. The military police just act as regular police
monitor civilians and also occasionally helping out with the other regiments, in an emergency
situation, they help the wounded and also evacuate. The garrison regiment help repair the walls
and primarily stay on top of them, they also man the cannons on top of the wall for long-range
attacks on titans. No one knows how the titan appears and only the church knows how the walls
were built and they refuse to share that information. Next, we will focus on the primary story and
our protagonist Eren Yeager.

Eren Yeager is 10 years old at the beginning of the story. He lives within wall Maria in
Shiganshina. His parents are Grisha Yeager (doctor) and Carla Yeager (stay-at-home mom). He
also lives with Mikasa Ackerman whose parents were killed by robbers and was adopted by the
Yeager family. Eren´s other best friend is Armin Arlett whose parents were also killed and he is
raised by his grandfather. The story starts on a regular day which quickly turns deadly as a
60-meter titan appears outside the wall and kicks a hole in it sending debris down onto the city
and making an entrance for titans outside the wall. The kids run to their family where the
Yeagers see Carla eaten by a giant smiling titan. A garrison regiment member rescues them
and puts them on a rescue boat towards inside wall Rose. After living many years alone the
kids are finally old enough to enter the training corps to enter one of the three main branches of
the military. Eren who has had his dreams set on the scout regiment since he was little is very
excited and Armin and Mikasa simply follow him to protect him and make sure that he doesn’t
get killed. Along the way, they make friends with many of the other characters in the show such
as Jean, Sasha, Connie, Bertholdt, Reiner, Annie, Marco, Ymir, and Christa. After the cadets
are graduated tragedy strikes. The colossal titan appears outside the wall Rose and knocks a
hole in it much like what happened 6 years ago with wall Maria. The Graduates are tasked with
defending the people of Trost. Many lives are lost both of civilians and of the graduates. At one
point Eren is eaten saving Armin. Then suddenly a titan appears and instead of trying to kill
more humans it instead starts killing other titans. After killing many titans and even helping
some people the titan collapses and Eren emerges from inside. He is immediately taken into
custody and they use his powers to seal the hole in the wall Rose. After some persuading, he is
given to the scout regiment, where commander Erwin Smith and Levi Ackerman will watch after
him and Hanji Zoe will perform experiments on him with the help of Levi´s squad. After deciding
that there must be another titan shifter who is giving getting information by being in close ranks,
the team goes on an expedition to find out who it is. A huge female titan is there and kills all of
Levis’s squad before running into a trap. She is captured momentarily and even beat up by Eren
in titan form before capturing him. She only gets so far before Mikasa and Levi get him back,
then she escapes. When the regiment get back to town they conclude that the shifter is Annie
Leonhart, who is in the military police and trained in the training corps with Eren and the others.
They devise a plan to trap her, which fails and leads us to our finale.

In the finale, Eren and Annie fight all over the town of Trost. Destroying buildings and
people in a massive rumble. Eren tries to get the upper hand but it turns out that Annie can
harden any part of her body and make it almost impossible to break. Hanji and Levi try to trap
Annie which works for a second which is just enough for Eren to get the upper hand. He almost
rips her out of the titan’s body but she completely encases herself with her hardening ability.
Making it unable for her to get out or for anyone to get to her.

In conclusion, Attack on Titan is a show with a very complex story and masterful writing.
The depth of the character is truly amazing and shows how talented Hajime Isayama is. The first
part of the second season came out through the early parts of 2017. This has been my Report
on Attack on Titan season 1.
