1. A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume of 0,3 ft3. The dry weight of
the sample is 31 lb. Water is carefully added to the container so as not to disturb
the condition of the sand. When the container is filled, the combined weight of
soil plus water is 38,2 lb. From these data, compute the void ratio of the soil in the
container and the specific gravity of the soil particles. Also determine the wet and
dry unit weights, in kN/m3 and pcf.
2. A borrow pit’s soil is being used as earth fill at a construction project. The in-
place dry density of the borrow pit soil is known to be 1,825 kg/m3. The job
contract requires the soil at the construction site to be compacted to a dry density
of 1,975 kg/m3. The project requires 12.000 m3 of compacted soil fill. What
volume of soil will the earthmoving contractor be required to obtain from the
borrow pit t provide the necessary volume of compacted fill ?
3. An undisturbed sample of sand has a dry weight of 4,20 lb and occupies a volume
of 0,038 ft3. The soil solids have a specific gravity of 2,75. Laboratory test
performed to determine the maximum and minimum densities indicate maximum
void ratio of 0,92 and minimum void ratio of 0,42. Compute the relative density
of this material.
