Lesson 3

INTERPOLATION

OBJECTIVES:
1. Use interpolation to find the values of the trigonometric functions
of the angle.
2. Use scientific calculator in finding the values of the trigonometric
functions of the angle.

WHAT I KNOW:
Give the values of the following trigonometric functions of the angle.
1. tan 43° 13’ =
2. sin 65° 23’ =
3. cos 78° 42 =
4. sin 62° 11’ =
5. tan 49° 32’ =

WHAT TO KNOW:
Study the given examples below.
Use interpolation to find the values of the trigonometric functions of
the given angle. Use scientific calculator.
1. sin 28° 13’
sin 28° 20’ = 0. 474600
10 sin 28° 13’ = ?
3
sin 28° 10’ = 0.472038
= 0.002562
𝟑
c = (0.002562)
𝟏𝟎

c = 0.000769
sin 28° 10’ =0.472038
+=0.000769
sin 28° 13’ = 0.472807

2. tan 18° 35’

tan 18° 40’ = 0.337833
10 tan 18° 35’ = ?
5
tan 18° 30’ = 0.334595
= 0. 003238
𝟓
c= (0.003238)
𝟏𝟎

c = 0.001619
tan 18° 30’ = 0.334595
+ = 0.001619
tan 18° 35’ = 0.336214

3. cos 71° 46’

cos 71° 40’ = 0.314545

10 4 cos 71° 46’ = ?

cos 71° 50’ = 0. 311782
= 0.002763
𝟒
c= ( 0.002763 )
𝟏𝟎

c = 0.001105
cos 71° 50’ = 0.311782
+ = 0. 001105
cos 71° 46’ = 0.312887
NOTE:
As the angle increases from 0° to 90°, the sine and
tangent of the angle increase and the cosine and cotangent of the
angle decrease.
Our assumption for interpolation that the differences on the
left and right are proportional is not quite correct , but for small
differences the results are within the limit of required accuracy.
INTERPOLATION – Is a method of approximation.
