LEARNING ACTIVITIES ACTIVITY 4.1

The novel Noli Me Tangere written by Rizal have been through a lot of
struggles before it was being published and made available to Filipino citizens.
The published work either supported or changed my authentic knowledge,
attitudes, and/or beliefs through its way of giving factual information in an
excellent manner.
Noli Me Tangere is a novel that was an advisory for the Filipinos to fight
against the colonizers and today's reminder of our history. The characters and
the events in the story resemble our life, culture, and beliefs of Filipino people.
Its primary goal is to defend Filipino people from foreign accusations of
foolishness and lack of knowledge, to show how the Filipino people lives during
Spanish colonial period and the cries and woes of his countrymen against
abusive officials and to discuss what religion and belief can really do to
everyday lives. It was written not to entertain but address the issue of injustices
and the how the Spanish especially the friars, abuse their power over the
Filipino’s who was then colonized by the Spaniards. It even incorporates some
of what can be considered taboo, like how Padre Damaso raped a woman and
even had a child with her. Though this is historically inaccurate, being a fictional
work, the fact that these issues had really happened on that time while adding
the fact that gender, social status and racial inequalities are rampant, anyone
would not be surprised that it became one of the driving force of the Filipinos to
starts showing nationalism and pursue revolution.
The trends that are apparent in the novel and how do these trends either
support or negate my inferences and/or predictions was how Spaniards used
religion against the people. Just like in other works, historically true or not, this
type of issue had always been present. I find it confusing that they would taught
how we should love one another and follow the commandments of the Lord,
our creator, that we must do what our Lord would do, and yet they are the one
who keeps on doing acts which is against the will and teachings of the church.
It is said that they use the people’s confession or ‘kumpisal’ to pry on the
revolutionaries’ plan. We had been taught that if we do this, the only one who
would know was the one that confess, the priest and the Lord. It keeps me
wonder on why would the one that established the rules or policies were the
one that keeps on breaking them. This could also been observed in the current
and past administrations. Our government was designed with the people having
the freedom to choose on whom they would want to lead them. In a way, it could
be said that the government should be working for the good of the people. They
were divided in three branches in order to balance each other and to avoid the
misuse of power but the current situation shows us none of these. Corruption
was rampant and the proprietors, despite the public knowing about it, were still
free to roam and still in power, they consistently misused the funds, funding
those that wasn’t really that is necessary in this time of pandemic, this
government doesn’t even back its own people and almost completely sworn
loyalty to the Chinese while the people keeps on paying for the incompetence
of its government.
The new knowledge or new understanding of previous knowledge I have
acquired from the novel that I perceive that will influence my practice/s is that
the plot twist when Padre Damaso revealed that he was Maria Clara’s father.
I’m aware of the ten commandments of the friars by Marcelo H. Del Pilar which
includes that they can used anyone’s wife to satisfy their needs. I’m not really
sure if this is historically accurate or if it really exists that time, but with the friars
doing such immoral acts would make everything the system that time really
messed up. Some of the priests in the present generation still does these that
sometimes I think that religion has nothing to do with a man’s act. If they can’t
live up to what they taught us, then how would we be better with them.
I agree to Rizal with its novel which tells us that we should reflect on our
actions and beliefs for our country. Rizal wrote Noli Me Tangere to promote
nationalism and for us to accept change in ourselves that we can still applies in
our today’s generation. This novel was considered to be one of the instruments
that initiated Filipino nationalism leading to the 1896 Philippine Revolution and
did not only awaken sleeping Filipino awareness, but also established the
grounds for aspiring to independence.

I. Rizal sa Ateneo at UST
As a newcomer, Jose was at first put at the tail of the class, but
he was soon promoted and kept on being promoted so that at the
end of one month he had attained to the rank of Emperor. At the end
of the term he obtained marks of excellent in all the subjects and in
the examinations. On the other hand, Rizal also overcomes the
struggles that he had faced during this period. During the spanish
era, racial discrimination was rampant to the extent that we were
called 'indio' in our home country. Rizal, having a small physique and
not being that fluent in Spanish when he started studying in Ateneo,
had been a victim of bullying that pushed him to take Spanish class
during his free time. It is fortunate that he his talent in writing had
been discovered during this period that leads him to compose
numerous poems where some of them even won in competitions.
Winning awards doesn't make the discrimination stop as the Spanish
tries to denounced his efforts saying that an indio cannot win in
competitions. Nevertheless, this doesn't stop Rizal on doing what he
loved --writing. In his second school, UST, he continued to be an
achiever despite having two majors which he both drop on his third
year in able to pursue medicine. This is due to his desire to cure his
mother.
Despite having the knowledge, skills and natural intelligence,
Rizal was just like any other student that faced numerous struggles
which we learned to overcome on our own. This struggles may take
in different forms and some may be harder than the others, in case
of Rizal, it was a struggle that were still present in today's generation
though it may now take another form. Asians were still discriminated
in some countries alongside the black people. It is quite amusing that
this kind of unhealthy attitude seems to adapt with the world's
change. It is no wonder Rizal develop such nationalistic character
and try to fight for his country on his own way but how come it is rare
for today's generation to have this kind of thinking. The youth despite
having the resources seems to just care on what was trending while
those that are aware doesn't speak up. Being blind and being quiet
with the current incompetency of the government wasn't really what
Rizal would like to taught us.

II. Ang Paglalakbay ni Dr. Jose P. Rizal

After his study in UST, he realized that his knowledge was not
enough to find cure for his mother so he decided to study abroad.
Due to this, he had the opportunity to visit different countries from
Singapore up until he finally be able to work under a famous
optalmologist in France for four months then he goes to Madrid to
study another doctor and this is where he wrote Noli Me Tangere.
Then he goes to Alemanya and some other part of Europe. At this
time his brother Paciano was supporting his financial needs. While
staying in different countries he established bonds with his co-Filipino
that was studying their and establish ties with some foreign friends
such as Bluementritt. Due to his travels he had learned numbers of
languages and have been educated to some of their cultures. He was
once noted how different and admirable women in Germany stating
that they are educated, serious, diligent and friendly and unlike the
Spanish women, they do not gossip. Back when he was in Europe, a
lot had happen to his family in Calamba and they had been put into
trial. He plea for a re-trial in Spain where he stood as his family's
lawyer but they didn't win. His stay in Europe wasn't always as
colorful as it seems especially when his brother Paciano had a hard
time supporting his financially given the Mercado family's situation
back then. He had experience famine and be in cold --dark days
indeed. He was also in foreign land when he published his book
which was funded by his brother and other friends. Rizal would like
to co-write Noli Me Tangere with his fellow co-La Solidaridad authors
but apparently the lack of enthusiasm of the others makes him decide
that he would write it on his own. He even composed music.
Studying on other country would really makes your horizon a little
wider as you would be exposed to another culture, techniques,
technologies and we can safely say that you would surely learn
something whether it is the culture, language or your field of
expertise. The part that I really find fascinating was how his brother
have supported him. Living in a society where siblings even fight for
their heritance which was commonly in the form of land, it is kind of
refreshing to know that Rizal wasn't just blessed with intelligence and
talents, but also with a loving family and seems that they have been
raised well. Living in another country also makes his thinking broader
which I think also contributed in strengthening his desires to make a
change in the Philippine Government. It is just unfortunate that after
everything that happens, we are slowly, willingly succumb to other
countries.

III. Rizal sa Japan

Japan was one of the countries that seems to have been
successfully preserve their culture and tradition given that the people
still have the same values as what they are even after over a hundred
years ago, based on Rizal's observation. Rizal's stay in Japan, just
like the other countries has it's positive and negative sides. In there
he had been still watched by the Spain through Caballero to the
extent that he even suggest for Rizal to reside in his hotel room. This
might be insulting for others but he had taken it as an opportunity to
save money for the accommodation. While staying in Japan he had
learnt its language as this has become a problem resulting to him
being the source of laughter in the area. He had find the need to learn
its language while in a foreign land but nowadays, if you come into
the Philippines, foreign doesn't need to learn. Filipino would be the
one adjusting to you. Personally, I'm still contemplating on whether I
would consider it as a good or bad thing. Adapting for others wasn't
that easy and with the locals helping you out instead of making fun
of you would be a blessing that not all people can experience. On the
other hand, this leads to colonial mentality. We have been welcoming
their culture without knowing that it is tarnishing ours. I'm glad that
Rizal had found some people that is worth staying for --a friend with
the same belief and a lover. It's unfortunate that his desire to change
and serve his country was his priority. Seeing the result after a
millennium, will he be happy that he choose to serve and be killed?
Some people don't even know his name while others just simply
forget. Was this the youth that you say that would be the future?

IV. Rizal: Kabanata 12-13

Rizal’s visit in Japan seems to have another effect on him as he
met his almost wife which he referred to as O-Sei-san. She fell in love
with him due to his gentleness, intelligence and hardworking. During
that time, Rizal was having a hard time due to language barrier and
O–Sei-san was the one that taught him and accompany him during
his stay in Japan. Apparently, they can’t be together as Rizal’s priority
was his country which she had respect. Even after this event, she
remain faithful to him and even get married just after Rizal’s death.
With the qualities that he had, women would really fall in love with
him at some point, he could be one of those luckiest man with O-sei-
san’s loyalty and love for him that transcends not only through time
but also through the distance.
One of the things that he admired in Japan that I’m really fond
aside from the cleanliness was that he noted that there were only few
homeless people which I think was the greatest flex of any country
would be. I hope that the time for the poverty to be lessen into
extreme minimum if cannot none would still come to country like ours.
Who knows maybe after another 50-100years, Filipino people would
finally get the life they deserve.
Another notable thing that had happen to him was when he met
Tetcho Suehiro, the Japanese man which had the same principles as
his and fought with the same means. He seems to be lucky enough
to run unto him and know someone that seems to be another version
of him. It wasn’t everyday that you meet someone that who are just
like you and let alone become friends with one. They even published
a book with the same purpose. Apparently, the fact that it was only
once in a lifetime experience as after they land in Paris, that was the
last time their paths crossed.

V. Rizal in Paris and Germany

After he left Japan, he eventually moved to Paris to deepen his
knowledge in ophthalmology. In there he befriended several top
German people and other Filipinos that also studies there such as
Juan Luna, who even make him a model for his artworks, Maximo
Viola, who sponsor the publishing of El Filibusterismo later on, and
many more. His loved for literature especially poems never seem to
falter as he continued to write some when he was in there. While in
Paris, he had written a letter to Blumentritt when he found out that
the Austrian were studying Filipino and was interested in the
Philippines that he even published some books there. He had sent
him his work called Aritmetica that makes him be liked by Blumentritt
and the two become friends. Blumentritt was really fond of Rizal that
it bothers him when a reply letter seems too long to be sent and he
even sometimes support him financially. It was an admirable
friendship for someone that started as pen-pals.
Rizal eventually decided to take time to visit Bluementritt in
Germany. He had sent a portrait of himself, drawn by himself in able
for Blumentritt to acknowledge him in the train station. Blementritt
wrote Rizal a letter of recommendation to University of Heidelberg in
able for him to visit the prestige university. He had been welcomed
to Berlin’s scientific circle. During his stay in Germany, he had gain
further knowledge of ophthalmology, furthered his studies of
sciences and languages, observe the economic and political
conditions of the German nation, associate with famous German
scientists and scholars, and publish his novel, Noli me Tangere.
He expressed his high regards to German women through a letter
for his sister stating that German women were serious, diligent,
educated and friendly which was very different from Spanish women
that gossipy, frivolous and quarrelsome. What he was deeply
fascinated about was the custom of the German during a social
gathering on where you ought to talk to someone you don’t know. If
we had this custom instead of being preying away from those that we
don’t know or the women being shy and be introvert then we could
have known to established ties in such events and gatherings would
surely be more lively and productive.
With Rizal’s write ups of his impressions of the countries he
visited as well as the culture and custom of them somewhat makes
me feel like for a few moment I have been in there myself. This is
where should our adaptability must be taken into advantage as this
would help us not just to strive as a country but as an individual
ourselves. Putting a lot of effort on learning and having goals instead
of just to have a stable job was really admirable. Though this kind of
mentality lies with us being a third-world country where poverty is
rampant and surviving was more important than what we really
desire, people would be more productive doing what they really want
that to just stick with social standard.
VI. In Hong Kong and Macao, 1888
Rizal wanted to go back in the Philippines as there had been a
problem that arises in there but apparently the Spanish friars keep
their eyes on him and even spread rumors about him conducting a
secret meeting and other activities as a preparation to fight against
the Spaniards. Even with the support of the Governor-General, the
friars did not stop harassing and accusing him of the things he hadn’t
done which leads for him to live his life harder to the point that his
friends believed that it was better for him to stay on a foreign land.
They even supported his financial needs in able to move despite his
health condition that time. His fellow Filipinos welcomed him warmly
in Hong Kong on where he continue to write about his visits and his
novel. He then goes to Macau with Basa. He noted that Macau that
time wasn’t that clean, maybe compared to Hong Kong and Japan,
and that it seems that the place was dead.
For people who works under the grace of God, the Spanish friars
acts was disgraceful. It is no wonder that country doesn’t flourish that
time especially having been colonized for 333 years just to be a
source of natural resources and to how off their power. Knowing that
they used the words of God to oppressed the people and into their
own advantage. It was a miracle that after that, the Catholic still
flourished as a religion in this country.

VII. Ang Unang Paguwi ni Rizal sa Pilipinas

Rizal was braved enough to come back to Philippines despite
knowing the fact that chance that he would be framed up would be
high. With his work, Noli Me Tangere, as a basis to accuse him of
starting a revolution. The moment he had step in the Philippine soil,
he had been exiled into Dapitan, still better than Ninoy Aquino though
or maybe just delayed execution. In his stay in Dapitan, he had lived
his life peacefully though he had been watched by the Spanish friars,
and they try to retract him back to Catholicism. Even with the turn of
events, he showed that he write his works for the Filipino and that he
could handle the Spanish criticisms but hate the thought of him being
branded as a coward so he refuse to stay away from Philippines and
be safe in a foreign land.
His actions was very Rizal-like. Based on the how he was
introduced to us from an early age, Rizal was a man of principle and
dignity. He could have the freedom that all people want that time. He
had the skills, experience, connections and he can even speak
several languages. He could’ve been rich, have a good life there, or
maybe if he used his degrees to had a work or to just established one
in there, and yet he comes back. The only thing that I find off was
that, he wanted to open the eyes of the Filipinos and yet when they
start a revolution, he doesn’t accept their offer. If he want a simple
life he could’ve just stayed abroad but if this was because he had a
family that time, I guess that’s reasonable enough.
VIII. Mga Banyagang Bumihag sa Puso ni Dr. Jose Rizal
From the time he started his voyage on several foreign land, he had
meet several women that had become part of his life though most of
them were just short lived and ended after he left the said country, it
Rizal cannot be considered as a womanizer. While in Madrid he had
fallen for Consuelo Ortig, O-sei-san when he was in Japan, Gertrude
Beckett falls in love with Rizal but apparently Rizal doesn’t like her. He
then met the then fiancé of Antonio Luna Nellie Boustead, Rizal met
Suzanne Jacoby in Brussels and they were deeply in love with each
other but their relationship doesn’t last. When he came to Dapitan, he
met Josephine Bracken who became his wife though they are not legally
married.

Rizal might have met a lot of women in his life and there are a lot of
women who falls in love with him but who wouldn’t though? A man with
dignity, principle, talented, poetic, skilled and high educational
attainment that knows how to respect women –who wouldn’t fall for that.
Saying that Rizal was a womanizer was also not reasonable. He doesn’t
cheat on anyone of them and eve stops seeing them before he left
knowing in himself that he would rather be in his home country suffering
than to live well with them.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES ACTIVITY 5.1

Present Reality

Directions: Follow the instruction and do the following activity.

1. Define the term “leadership”

Leadership is about Influencing people by what you say and do.

Good leadership is influencing someone to do something well or better.
Great leadership is when you influence someone to be the very best they can
be. Leadership stems from social influence, not authority or power. Leadership
requires others, and that implies they don’t need to be “direct reports”.
Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a
common goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and
colleagues with a strategy to meet the company's needs.

2. Enumerate qualities of a good leader.

Good leaders must have; integrity, ability to delegate, communication,

self-awareness, gratitude, learning agility, influence, empathy, courage and
respect. Leaders must establish high standards of personal integrity, honesty,
and excellence. They must have wisdom, compassion, high moral standards,
inner strength and courage. They must also emerge and be the key to radical
social transformation.
3. Was Dr. Rizal a good leader? Support your answer. He is worth emulating?
Yes, Rizal was a good leader. He was admired for being a good leader.
He gained the respect of his colleagues in the Propaganda Movement like
Marcelo H. del Pilar who was once his tough rival for the leadership of the
organization. As a leader, Rizal was transformational, charismatic, visionary,
and most importantly, incorruptible. Rizal may be known as the
national hero that changed the course of history through his writings and ideals,
but it was his effective leadership that brought people together to bring about
change and moral awakening across the country.
Yes, he is worth emulating because of his endless intellectual
inquiry, his readiness to read, study, and work hard and not just daydream,
his willingness to get out of his comfort zone and try new things, his
engagement with politics, his decisions to make the sacrifices necessary
to travel, his love of family and concern for his mother, and his readiness
to speak out forthrightly about what he believed was right.

4. Review the qualities of a good leader and evaluate if you have some or all
of the qualities mentioned.
I have some of the qualities of being a good leader which includes
having integrity, ability to delegate, communication, self-awareness, gratitude,
empathy, courage and respect.
5. Suggest some means by which you could develop your leadership potentials.
How could you help achieve true freedom and progress in our country?

To develop my leadership potentials, I must practice discipline, take on

more projects, learn to follow, develop situational awareness, inspire others,
keep learning, empower my teammates, resolve conflicts and be a discerning
listener.
I could help achieve true freedom and progress in our country through
having enough knowledge regarding my rights. As a Filipino citizen, it is
important for us to know our rights as a citizen and the rules and laws that
give us our freedoms. If anyone is in violation of that freedom, we have to
confront it. Exercise our right to vote because it is a powerful tool and most
students don't care about it. Our nation is represented by people we vote into
power. Be aware of it and know that every vote is a representation of the
voice of the people. The outcome may not be to our liking, but it is democracy
at work, and that is a beautiful thing. We must keep clean not just with
ourselves, but also with our surroundings. We may not be able to change the
people by ourselves, but try to challenge the people we know. Never throw
even a candy wrapper by the side of the street. Hold on to it and dump it in
our own bin at home.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES ACTIVITY 5.2

Present Reality

Directions: Follow theinstruction and answer the following.

1. Define the terms “mission”, “vision, “objectives” and “goals”.
Mission is a specific task with which a person or a group is charged.
Vision is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.
A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of
people envision, plan and commit to achieve.
2. Try to envision yourself 20 years from now. What do you want to be? What
are you good at? What are your interests? With these questions in mind, write
your vision, mission, goals and objectives in life.
I want to be a Professional Agricultural and Biosystems Engineer. I want
this profession to help the agricultural sectors on solving agricultural and
biosystems related problems that will lead to the increase in economic growth
of our country. I want to invent something for example a machine that will help
farmers so that before I leave the Earth, I contributed something.
3. Did Dr. Jose Rizal have a mission and vision in life? Support your answer.
What were the results of his having or not having a mission and vision in life?
Yes, Dr. Jose Rizal have a mission and vision in life. His chief aim was
to reform Philippine society, first by uncovering its ills and second, by
awakening the Filipino youth. His enemies were the oppressive colonial
government, but especially the corrupt elements among the friars, members of
the religious orders that exerted the greatest influence over the government and
thereby held complete sway over the lives of the Filipinos.
The results of his having a mission and vision in life make him think and
make a plan on how to achieve it. And what he was doing or planning is very
important that will help on solving the greatest problem in the country. This
mission and vision serves as his target that needs to be accomplished. And it
also serve as a reminder that he is functioning in their community and to the
whole nation as well. Setting a mission and vision in life can make Rizal happy
and successful through the fulfillment of this mission and vision itself.
4. Is it possible to have a true fulfillment, success and happiness in life? Explain
your answer.
Yes, it is possible to have a true fulfillment, success and happiness in
life because when we passed away this fulfillment and success will serve as a
memory to our relatives as well as to other person who knows us. And also, it
will serve as a satisfaction for us wherein we’ve made such fulfillment or
contribution throughout our life.
5. Enumerate the advantages of having a personal mission and vision in life to
you as an individual, as a family and as a Filipino citizen.
The advantages of having a personal mission and vision in life to me as
an individual is that it will defines who I am and how I intend to live. It wraps all
of my values into a couple sentences and gives me a dependable framework
to base my actions on. Furthermore, it motivates me to be a better person and
creates greater life satisfaction.
Having a mission in a family will makes us realized that we are not alone
in achieving our dreams or our mission. And that our mission is not only for our
own sake or satisfaction but to the satisfaction of the whole family.
Furthermore, having a mission as a Filipino citizen will make us feel that
we are a part of a country and that we are one of the important means that will
contribute to its progress. And if we achieved that mission, this will lead to our
satisfaction and fulfillment because we contributed something to our nation.

Directions: Follow the instruction and answer the following.

1. What is the difference between honesty/integrity and dishonesty exhibited by
individuals in our present Philippine society?
Honesty is the quality of being honest. It is adherence to moral and
ethical principles or soundness of moral character. It is a facet of moral
character that connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity,
truthfulness, straightforwardness, including straightforwardness of conduct,
along with the absence of lying, cheating, theft, etc. Honesty also involves being
trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere.
Dishonesty is to act without honesty. It is going against moral and ethical
principles. It is used to describe cheating, lying, or deliberately withholding
information, or being deliberately deceptive or a lack in integrity, as well as
corruption.
2. Explain how one’s honesty/integrity or dishonesty develops.
One’s honesty/integrity or dishonesty develops in one’s home. It means
if our parents teach us to become honest all the time, we will became an honest
person and vice versa. It is also because practicing honesty is a good quality
for us to be categorized as a good person. As we start practicing honesty while
we were still young, we can brought it as we go older.
3. From your personal experiences, cite some possible outcomes of honesty.
Integrity and dishonesty.
From my personal experiences, the possible outcomes of honesty
includes having a wonderful life and nothing to be afraid of. Because if we apply
honesty, every people who knows us will trust us no matter what in every
circumstances. People will respect us and follow because they believe in us.
We have nothing to be afraid of because we have nothing to hide.
On the other hand, the possible outcomes of dishonesty is a chaotic one.
People will disrespect you and they won’t believe in you because they know
that you are a dishonest person. And when it comes the time that you are saying
the truth, no one will believe in you.
4. Are you convinced that there is a link between dishonesty and common
societal problems? Explain your answer.
Yes, I convinced that there is a link between dishonesty and common
societal problems because I believe that doing bad things will lead to problems.
For example, if our President in our country is practicing dishonesty, there’s a
big possibility that he is going against the law like corruption and therefore leads
to different societal problems.
5. Do you consider Rizal as an ideal role model for honesty/integrity? Support
your answer with historical facts
Yes, I considered Rizal as an ideal role model for honesty/integrity. It is
because Rizal do not go against the law as well as his mission and he always
speak for the truth. And also because he fought for freedom in a silent but
powerful way. He expressed his love for the Philippines through his novels,
essays and articles rather than through the use of force or aggression. In other
word he used his writings to awaken the nationalism of every Filipinos.

Directions: Follow the instruction and answer the following.

1. From your own personal experiences at home or in school, give at least two
examples when you were rewarded for your industriousness or punished for
your laziness.
From my own personal experiences at home, I was rewarded by my
parents for being a good son and being a responsible person in doing my duties
and responsibilities with regards to my studies. On the other hand, I am
punished by my parents at home because sometimes I and my sibling argue
with each other.
2. Did Dr. Jose Rizal believe that Filipinos were born lazy or indolent? Explain
your aswer.
Dr. Jose Rizal do not believe that Filipinos were born lazy or indolent
because even before the Spaniards arrived, Rizal argues that the
early Filipinos were already carrying out trade within provinces and with other
neighboring countries; they were also engaged in agriculture and mining; some
natives even spoke Spanish. All this disproves the notion that Filipinos are by
nature indolent.
The Spanish reign brought about a decline in economic activities
because of certain causes:
First, the establishment of the Galleon Trade cut off all previous
associations of the Philippines with other countries in Asia and the Middle
East. As a result, business was only conducted with Spain through
Mexico. Because of this, the small businesses and handicraft industries that
flourished during the pre-Spanish period gradually disappeared.
Second, Spain also extinguished the natives’ love of work because of
the implementation of forced labor. Because of the wars between Spain and
other countries in Europe as well as the Muslims in Mindanao, the Filipinos
were compelled to work in shipyards, roads, and other public works,
abandoning agriculture, industry, and commerce.
Third, Spain did not protect the people against foreign invaders and
pirates. With no arms to defend themselves, the natives were killed, their
houses burned, and their lands destroyed. As a result of this, the Filipinos
were forced to become nomads, lost interest in cultivating their lands or in
rebuilding the industries that were shut down, and simply became submissive
to the mercy of God.
Fourth, there was a crooked system of education, if it was to be
considered an education. What was being taught in the schools were
repetitive prayers and other things that could not be used by the students to
lead the country to progress. There were no courses in Agriculture, Industry,
etc., which were badly needed by the Philippines during those times.
Fifth, the Spanish rulers were a bad example to despise manual
labor. The officials reported to work at noon and left early, all the while doing
nothing in line with their duties. The women were seen constantly followed by
servants who dressed them and fanned them – personal things which they
ought to have done for themselves.
Sixth, gambling was established and widely propagated during those
times. Almost everyday there were cockfights, and during feast days, the
government officials and friars were the first to engange in all sorts of bets
and gambles.
Seventh, there was a crooked system of religion. The friars taught the
naïve Filipinos that it was easier for a poor man to enter heaven, and so they
preferred not to work and remain poor so that they could easily enter heaven
after they died.
Lastly, the taxes were extremely high, so much so that a huge portion
of what they earned went to the government or to the friars. When the object
of their labor was removed and they were exploited, they were reduced to
inaction.
Rizal admitted that the Filipinos did not work so hard because they were
wise enough to adjust themselves to the warm, tropical climate. “An hour’s
work under that burning sun, in the midst of pernicious influences springing from
nature in activity, is equal to a day’s labor in a temperate climate.”
3. Based on historical facts, cite specific examples of Dr. Rizal’s
industriousness.
Rizal’s industriousness can be seen through his way of serving others.
Dr. Jose Rizal’s way of serving others is by advocating the Reform movement
in order to change the bad situation of the Filipinos from the Spaniards. This is
his way to serve his countrymen. Rizal being an active propagandist used his
knowledge by writing essays, poems, and novels- the El Filibusterismo and Noli
Me Tangere- to awaken the Filipino people to fight for their rights. This is his
greatest contribution to the Filipino people as his way of serving others.
4. As a present citizen of our country, explain some possible reasons why true
economic and social progress may take time to be achieved.
As a present citizen of our country, the possible reasons why true
economic and social progress may take time to be achieved is that I believe
that everything takes time. It is because we need time for us to plan on what is
the best method or steps to use to achieve a goal. We cannot achieved a goal
without preparations and best method to use to. And also, I believe that
achievement takes time and effort.
5. Give at least three suggested ways of developing your and other Filipino
citizen’s love for work or industriousness.
For us to develop our industriousness or love for work, we must always
have a mission toward our work. We should be specific in creating the end point
of our goal. Ask ourselves what it is that we hope to ultimately achieve. Make
our goal measurable. Create steps to meet our goal that are action-oriented.
Consider whether our goal is realistic and put a time frame on our goal. With all
of these, I think we could develop industriousness in ourselves.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES ACTIVITY 6.3

Present Realities:

Directions: Follow the instruction and answer the following.

1. Give the difference between an “educated person” and an “intelligent
person”.
An educated person is one who has undergone a process of learning
that results in enhanced mental capability to function effectively in familiar and
novel situations in personal and intellectual life. An educated person is the one
who has successfully completed a certain level of education as of the society
they are living.
On the other hand, an intelligent person is the one who can make out
something out of all the knowledge they have acquired to find solution to
problems.
The difference between education and intelligence is that intelligence is
internal, they are skills and abilities that we have naturally in varying degrees
and education is given to us externally through teachers, books, parents and
so on.

2. What are the beneficial effects of education to one’s personal and

professional growth to Filipinos living in a globalized environment?
The beneficial effects of education to one’s personal and professional
growth to Filipinos living in a globalized environment includes creating more
employment opportunities, securing a higher income, developing problem-
solving skills, improving the economy, providing a prosperous and happy life,
giving back to the community, creating modern society, bridging the borders,
creating equal opportunities and introducing empowerment.

3. Is education the possible solution to violence, greed, lack of discipline, lack

of objectivity and criminality in society? Support your answer with specific
examples.
Yes, Education is the possible solution to violence, greed, lack of
discipline, lack of objectivity and criminality in society because if you are
educated it means that you are well mannered. It is because, we are educated
not only mentally but also we are educated on having good manners.
Education is the key to turn a weakness into a strength. It offers
different tools and ways to understand problems that lay ahead of us and
helps resolve them. More importantly, education provides us with
considerable mental agility to make the right decisions and spring into action
when needed. Many types of research show that educated women can more
easily stand up against gender bias and marital violence as they have
improved their decision-making capabilities.
Whether it is about respect, a higher position in society and a
professional environment, financial security, family stability, education
provides all of these and much more. Home stability provided by owning your
own home helps children who grew up in their own houses or apartments
become more successful. They are more likely to graduate high school (25%)
and finish college (116%). “Education is the most powerful weapon which you
can use to change the world,” as Nelson Mandela said. It helps people
become better citizens, get a better-paid job, and shows the difference
between good and bad. Education shows us the importance of hard work and,
at the same time, helps us grow and develop. Thus, we are able to shape a
better society to live in by knowing and respecting rights, laws, and
regulations. Learning languages through educational processes helps interact
with different people in order to exchange ideas, knowledge, and good
practices. It teaches us to live in harmony.

4. Name some historical facts that show Dr. Jose Rizal’s love for education.
According to Austin Craig, Rizal ambitioned to make education
accessible to all, “the teaching instinct that led him to act as mentor to the
Filipino students in Spain and made him the inspiration of a mutual
improvement club of his young countrymen in London, suggested the
foundation of a school in Paris. Later a Pampangan youth offered him $40,000
with which to found a Filipino college in Hong Kong, where many young men
from the Philippines had obtained an education better than their own land could
afford but not entirely adapted to their needs. The scheme attracted Rizal and
a prospectus for such an institution which was later found among his papers
not only proves how deeply he was interested, but reveals the fact that his idea
of education were essentially like those carried out in the present public school
course of instruction in the Philippines”.
Rizal also showed his support to the group of women in Malolos when
their petition of establishing a school was denied by Gen. Weyler. He wrote a
letter to the ladies in support to their courageous action. Rizal preaches the
need of education and said that “ignorance is slavery”. Rizal always reminded
his sisters the value and importance of education thus when Josefa and
Trinidad visited Rizal in Hong Kong he encourage the two to learn the English
language. Perhaps Rizal’s appreciation of education was influenced by his
mother, Doña Teodora Alonzo. His mother was considered his first teacher. At
the age of three he learned the alphabet and also taught him to appreciate
Spanish poetry.
He even recognized the importance of industrial education as well. Rizal
included this concept in the five purposes of the La Liga Filipina which he
founded, the development of instruction, agriculture and commerce.
When Jose Rizal was deported in Dapitan on 1893, he devoted his time
in teaching young children. Rizal applied the learning he acquired in the
different school that he visited during his travels. It was in Dapitan particularly
Talisay where Rizal used his talents and limited resources to serve his
countrymen during the four years of his exile. He practiced his profession as a
doctor, farmer, teacher, community developer, engineer and scientist. Rizal
opened a school for young boys in the community. They were given subjects in
reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, geometry, languages, history and good
conduct. Rizal even gave practical lessons on the use of their hands, for he
believed that education should be inculcated or integrated with the development
of the community. He also taught his students different kinds of sport activities
such as boxing, swinging on parallel bars and rings, swimming and arnis on
account of his belief that a sound body makes a sound mind.
Rizal’s method of teaching is different compared from other schools of
his time. He saw to it that learning should be adaptable to the needs or actual
life of the people. Rizal is not just a conventional type of teacher; his visions
were not just for himself but for the benefits of his countrymen. The effort of our
present Department of Education and other learning institutions in curriculum
development is in harmony with the ideas and visions of Rizal. The government
is also giving its full support and prioritizes the education of Filipinos. But we
should also remember that the time and needs of the learners during Rizal’s
time is different to the learners of today. There might be ideas or methods which
are no longer needed in the present. But still we owe him for pioneering a
technique in teaching. Our educators should also follow and be motivated by
the exemplar deeds of Rizal. If he were living today, he would definitely continue
his undertakings in molding the minds of our youth. Just as what he had told
“Ang mga kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan”.
5. Did Dr. Jose Rizal’s famous essays and poems reflect his good education?
Explain your answer.
The writings and various events on the life of Jose Rizal are filled of ideas
concerning education. It is because, he recognized the importance of education
in the development of a nation and its people. Crisostomo Ibarra, the principal
character of his novel Noli Me Tangere possesses a desire to establish a
suitable school. Ibarra mentioned in the novel what he considered a modern
school. According to him the building should be spacious and hygienic, the site
should be large and provided with playground and garden. Rizal himself
dreamed of founding a school in accordance with the demands of modern times
and circumstances.
