5.1 TANK FOUNDATIONS
5.2 General
b) The foundation within the ring wall shall be filled with graded coarse sand. This infill
material shall be laid in successive 6" (150mm) thick compacted layers, firmly
compacted at optimum moisture and to maximum density. Mechanical compactors,
vibratory rollers shall be used for compaction to achieve a dry density of 95% for
each layer.
Leak detection Pipes (Minimum wall thickness of Schedule 40) shall be provided
through the Ring wall to drain out collected liquid vide Geomembrane. The need for
pipe sleeves with drain pipes shall be evaluated.
d) Over final layer of sand fill pad, a corrosion proof layer 3 inch (75mm). Asphalt
sand mix will be laid using standard mix as specified in article “Material” of this
specification.
The Asphalt sand shall be applied on the firm and compacted surface in
accordance with the lines and gradients as shown. The Asphalt surfaces shall be
compacted to the required slopes to the satisfaction of the Owner’s
Representative/Engineer.
e) Cathodic protection, if required by Owner, shall be provided as per Vendor’s
specifications, for which Pipe sleeves will be left in the R.C.C ring wall.
f) Pits for draw-off sump shall be made after the above operation is completed.
h) After tanks have been mounted and before making pipe line connection, tanks shall
be blanked and gradually filled with water to 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full. The tank shall not
be filled up to next level, until the settlement in the soil is stabilized. This operation
is required to eliminate possible future settlements.
This shall be applicable when the Tank Foundation design does not require Ring wall
under the Tank shell.
a) Remove the objectionable material and replace it with compacted infill material as
described above.
d) Not settle excessively at the perimeter due to the weight of the shell wall.
a) Crushed stones / gravels that will be used in a ring wall shall be compacted to 98%
of minimum dry density in accordance with ASTM D1557 in a layers not exceeding
150 mm thickness.
b) The side slopes of the ring wall shall be 1:1 for inward & 1:1.5 for outward direction.
c) Stone / Brick pitching set in 1:4 cement sand mortar shall be provided at the side
slopes of the crushed stone / gravel ring wall or as shown in drawings for slope
stabilization.
ZISHAN ENGINEERS (PVT.) LTD. FAUJI TRANS TERMINAL LIMITED
d) Toe wall shall also be provided on the outer side of the Stone / Brick pitching.
e) Joint Sealant shall be provided between annular Base plate and ring wall
foundation after Hydrotesting.
This shall be applicable when the Tank Foundation design requires the provision of RCC
ring wall, then following guidelines shall be used:
a) A ring wall of RCC shall be constructed prior to commencement of sand filling and
according to the requirements, as laid out in this specification.
b) The material and placement of Anchor bolts, if required by design, shall be as per
relevant article of “Pain and Reinforced Concrete works specifications”.
c) Joint Sealant shall be provided between annular Base plate and ring wall
foundation after Hydrotesting.
6.1 TOLERANCE
Tank foundations shall be constructed to tolerances which permit proper Tank without shimming
or leveling of the plates. The Foundation shall be leveled within tolerances as follows:
a) For RCC ring wall, the top of the ring wall shall be leveled within ± 1/8 in. (3 mm) in any
30 ft (9 m ) of the circumference and within ±1/4 in.(6 mm) in the total circumference
measured from the average elevation.
b) Where RCC ring wall is not provided, the foundation under the shell shall be leveled
within ±1/8 in. (3 mm) in any 10 ft (3 m) of the circumference and within
± 1/2 in. (13 mm) in the total circumference measured from the average elevation.
7.2 The Contractor shall provide the qualified personnel and approved laboratory facilities to
carry out the tests detailed in BS 1377 / ASTM D1557 to control the compaction of all
material in accordance with this specification.
7.3 Density tests shall be carried out at every course of foundation sand fill and at a
frequency not less Two (02) tests per layer per tank as directed by the Owner’s
Representative/Engineer.
