Lecture 1 – 3 (week 1)
• Knowledge of basic terminology
• knowledge of sample, population,
representation of data
What is statistics?
It is a discipline that concern of the collection,
organization, analysis, interpretation of data.
Descriptive statistics

Summary of set of data represented in the sample

Mean, median and standard deviation

Sense of centre location of the data, variability in

the data and nature of distribution of the
observation in the sample
Inferential statistics

Reporting data and drawing conclusions

(interpret) about scientific system through
fundamental understanding of probability
Example – Bread making
• What do you think the variable here?
• Will this effect the production in large
quantity?
• How do you know that your process of making
the same bread is successful?
• What is the sample and the population if you
have several lines in a bread factory?
Sample vs Population

Population
