Online Education VS Traditional Education: The Pros and Cons

INTRODUCTION
In March 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte declared the entire country under enhanced
community quarantine (ECQ) because of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, classes from
preschool to college were indefinitely suspended. Because of the quarantine measures, schools
were asked to hold the remainder of their semester online. There are two types of online teaching
and learning: synchronous, which happens in real-time, and asynchronous, which has no
interaction but uses online channels. Some would actually mix the methods.
Traditional learning, also known as back-to-basics, conventional education or customary
education, refers to long-established customs found in schools that society has traditionally
deemed appropriate. Some forms of education reform promote the adoption of progressive
education practices, a more holistic approach which focuses on individual students' needs and
self-expression. In the eyes of reformers, traditional teacher - centered methods focused on rote
learning and memorization must be abandoned in favor of student-centered and task-based
approaches to learning.
E-Learning refers to the use of internet or wireless technologies to deliver a broad array of
training solutions. E-Learners access the learning from computers via the internet or an intranet,
or through a hand held device like a palm pilot. In 2001 Marc Rosenberg suggested the following
definition of e-Learning: “the use of Internet technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that
enhance knowledge and performance.”
In less than two short years this definition has expanded to include wireless as well as
internet technologies with the two technologies often working together to delivery focused learning
to the job-site. We are all familiar with traditional learning (classroom-Learning) which is face-to-
face group learning led by an instructor or subject matter expert. In e-Learning environments
learners interact with learning materials, their instructors and other learners from various locations
and often at various times using network technologies. So by its nature, E-learning offers
significant flexibility as to when and how learning occurs. Drawn on the existing pandemic and
potential shift to full e-learning, this study has focused on the descriptive evaluation of pros and
cons of e – learning against the traditional learning modalities.

OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this study was to find out advantages and disadvantages of two
learning modalities: online learning (E – learning) and the traditional way. Specifically, it
determined the experiences of students in using the E-learning classroom and in comparison with
the traditional method; identified whether the intervention was appropriate or inappropriate to each
modes to an extent. Finally, the researchers were able to find out the pros and cons concerning
the use of the E-learning classrooms and the traditional way of learning.
METHODOLOGY
This is a descriptive online survey employing questionnaires to elicit data on the pros and
cons of e – learning against the traditional learning modalities. A total of 50 Peterian students
responded and provided consent to participate. Ratings were descriptively analyzed using mean,
frequency, and percentages.

DATA COLLECTION
The work was carried out in three (3) stages. The first step was searching online academic
journals for the appropriate research papers. The second step was the online survey of 50
Peterians studying at different courses in St. Peter’s College Of Misamis Oriental Inc. These
courses include: Marketing, Business, and courses in Professional Education. These students
were sent the survey link, and they answered open-ended questions. The third process used was
the descriptive and documentary analysis to collect and analyze all the findings.

ETHICAL STANDARD
It is the researcher’s responsibility to follow the code of practice on ethical standards, and
any relevant academic or professional guidelines in the conduct of the study. Thus we make
certain providing appropriate information sheets and consent forms, and ensuring confidentiality in
the storage and use of data. It is not necessary for participants to take part in the study without
their knowledge and consent at the time. Any significant change in the question, design or conduct
over the course of the research should be notified to the instructor and may require a new
application for ethics approval.
