Question # 1: Read the passage below, and explain in “one” sentence, using a variety of
subordinating clause structures, what happened to Yves Rossy in 2008 and 2009.
In 2008, Jet Man Yves Rossy made a flight over the Alps, reaching a top descent speed of 304 kph, using
a jet-powered wing. In November of the following year he attempted to fly over the Strait of Gibraltar,
aiming to be the first person to cross from Africa to Europe using a jet wing. He jumped out of the plane
at around 2000 meters over Tangier in Morocco, hoping to land in Atlanterra in Spain fifteen minutes
later. However, he was forced to ditch into the sea because of heavy cloud and strong wind. He was
picked up by a support helicopter 5 kilometers off the Spanish coast and taken to hospital, but released
as uninjured. His jetpack, which has its own parachute and float, was retrieved by the Spanish coast
guard.

Question # 2: Form new sentences of modern English to express the meaning of the extract
below, substituting your own words as far as possible.
By degrees I made a discovery of still greater moment. I found that these people possessed a method of
communicating their experience and feelings to one another by articulate sounds. I perceived that the
words they spoke sometimes produced pleasure or pain, smiles or sadness, in the minds and
countenances of the hearers. This was indeed a godlike science, and I ardently desired to become
acquainted with.
