DISSERTATION (DSN 3726)
PREAMBLE

This handbook on Dissertation Format Guidelines has been prepared by MAHSA University to
help students in preparing their undergraduate degree by coursework dissertation for submission
to Business, Finance and Information Technology of MAHSA University.

A dissertation has to be written in accordance to the guideline with reference of Harvard style of
citation. The following are the dissertation formatting guidelines which are the basic requirements
of writing that must be taken into considerations:

1. Format
2. Harvard Citation.
3. Examples
1.0 FORMAT

1.1 Length of Dissertation

The business research methodology dissertation should be between 10,000 to 12,000 words
excluding appendices, references, tables, figures and quotations.

1.2 Organizational Structure and Format

Students are to adhere to the following organizational structure and format:

i. Font

Times New Roman typeface should be used.

Font Size
Chapter Header (upper case) 14
Block quotations, text in tables and footnotes 10
Abstract, acknowledgement and the main body 12

ii. Heading and Subheadings (Limit to 4 levels of headings if possible)

Flushed left, Bold, upper case, font 12

iii. Margins (Body of Dissertation)
All margins must follow the measurement specified below (applies both to portrait and landscape
orientation):

Left Margin 3.8 cm (1.5 inches)


Right Margin 2.5 cm (1.0 inch)
Top Margin 2.5 cm (1.0 inch)
Bottom Margin 2.5 cm (1.0 inch)

iv. Paragraphs and Line Spacing


The first line of all paragraphs should be indented one tab key from the left-hand margin. The body
texts should be justified. In the main body, use 1.5 line spacing and 0 point before and after. Leave
2 lines space before a heading. Do not leave a line between paragraphs.

v. Pagination
Page numbers should be centered and be placed at the bottom of the page. Each page in the
dissertation, from the body onward should be numbered in consecutive order. This includes the
text, references and appendices. Preliminary pages carry lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii etc.)

vi. Tables and Figures


a. Tables are numbered by chapters using numerals. Title of tables should be labeled at the top of
the respective tables and flushed left.
b. Figures include maps, charts, diagrams, drawings, printed images, photos, etc. Each of these
categories is numbered according to chapters throughout the dissertation using numerals. Title of
figures should be labeled at the bottom of the respective figures and flushedleft.

vii. Equations and Formulas


Every equation should be centered and numbered continuously, according to the chapters and the
equation number must be in parentheses aligned to the right.

The body of dissertation is made up of a number of chapters. The major chapters of the
dissertation should include but not limited to the following:

1.3 Quality and Integrity of Dissertation


Plagiarism is strictly prohibited as it is a very serious offense. Actions will be taken in accordance
if a student exceeds 30% of similarity index report in Turnitin website.

1.4 Citation and Referencing Styles


Students are allowed to choose only one of the mentioned citation format below. Citation should
be consistent throughout the reference.
 American Psychological Association (APA) Style 6th Edition.
 Harvard Reference Style.

1.5 Binding the Final Copy


The final copy of the dissertation should be hardbound in green and the cover must be lettered in
gold.
1.6 Paper Quality
Quality plain white simile paper (80 gsm) of A4 size (210 x 297 mm) should be used for all
copies of the dissertation. Text or illustrations should be printed on only one side of eachsheet.

1.7 Cover Spine


The following particulars should be lettered in gold (direction of text from head to foot), using
18-point font.
 Title of Dissertation
 Month and Year of submission (Example: December 2016)

1.8 Cover Page


The cover page should contain the following information:
 The name of the university is written in full, bold, uppercase and centered using 18-pointfont.
 The final title used must be the one approved by the panel of examiners. It should be centered,
uppercase, bold and single-spaced using 18-point size.
 Name of the author must be uppercase and bold using 18-point size.
 The degree for which the dissertation is submitted is typed in the title case using 18-pointfont.
