CRJ550/700/705/900/1000-FON-34-020
CRJ100/200/440-FON-34-010

ATA: 34-45

DATE: 22 Nov 2019

SUBJECT: Uncommanded heading indication changes from magnetic (MAG) to true

(TRU).

MODEL: CL-600-2B19, CL-600-2C10, CL-600-2C11, CL-600-2D24, CL-600-2D15,

and CL-600-2E25

APPLICABILITY: Aircraft equipped with dual IRS (option <0025> or <1025> or <3025> as
applicable)

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Flight Information Note (FON) is to highlight the importance to CRJ pilots of
the possibility for the heading indication to change from MAG to TRU without crew input and crew
procedures to promptly correct the heading reference.

DISCUSSION:

There have been several events reported of the uncommanded changes of heading indication
from MAG to TRU. This is indicated by TRU flag (in white) above the lubber line of the HSI on the
Primary Flight Display (PFD) and close to the digital heading indication on the Multi-Function
Display (MFD) as follows:

The following indications flash continuously if heading indication change to TRU:

 TRU flag, if airplane altitude is below 10,000 feet

 VOR 1 and/or VOR 2 bearing pointer legends and icons, if selected
 NAV source indication, if VOR 1, VOR 2, LOC 1 or LOC 2 is selected

The change from magnetic to true heading will not impact point to point navigation, but may be
significant during approach or missed approach and if the aircraft is navigated on vectors or on a
heading or course defined type of leg.

Immediate action may be required if the aircraft is flying in an area which is shaded on the
following map because in the shaded areas the heading error will be greater than 10
degrees.

OPERATOR ACTION:

NOTE: Recommended crew actions that follow are not applicable when operating in regions
where true heading is used intentionally.
If the aircraft is flying on vectors or a course defined leg in an area which is shaded, crew should
advise ATC and perform a go-around as appropriate.
The condition can usually be rectified by selecting MAG on the FMS CDU as follows:
(1) On INDEX page select FMS CTL LSK: (2) Select MAG/TRUE LSK:

(3) CDU will briefly display “REQ PENDING”, then “MAG/TRUE”:

(4) Confirm that MAG is displayed in green and TRUE in white
(5) Confirm that PFD and MFD indications no longer display TRU
