From the Editor !

Pictured above is a CRJ200 aircraft in the colours of Tyrolean Airways of
Austria, a long-time customer of Bombardier. In addition to the CRJ, the airline
operates several other Bombardier Aerospace models, including Q100 and 300
Series Dash 8 turboprops and the new Q400 aircraft.

Bombardier front line CRJ support for Tyrolean is currently provided by Hal Dumbrille (Customer
Service Account Manager) and Doug Caldwell (Field Service Representative).

Maintenance Cost Working Group Preface

The CRJ Maintenance Cost Working Group (MCWG) has been in operation since October 1997. The group
consists of representatives from Operators and associated Bombardier departments such as Maintenance
Engineering, In-Service Engineering, Supplier Liaison, Spares, and Warranty, and selected Bombardier
Suppliers. It is the MCWG’s intention to publish information in the ISAR on ways to help reduce the cost of
operating the aircraft.
Specific cost reduction issues contributed by Maintenance Engineering
are identified with a “$” symbol preceding the subject title.

Subject: Spoilers - SECU Active/Standby Module Switching

Reference: Fault Isolation Manual; Aircraft Maintenance Manual (see Tasks in text)

NOTE: This ISAR article is intended for troubleshooting purposes only, and should be considered
as complementary information to the Fault Isolation Manual, chapter 27-60-00.
The following is a procedure to force an SECU active/standby module to switch-over. This can be
helpful in those instances where the technician is troubleshooting a spoiler system problem which
cannot be duplicated on the ground.
In order to force the SECU module switching, the technician needs to simulate a full flight cycle (i.e.,
WOW to WOFFW transition, landing gear retraction/extension, and WOFFW to WOW transition).
Note: at least two (2) technicians are required to carry out the following steps.

" JACK AIRCRAFT PER AMM TASK 07-11-01-582-801.

" INSTALL WOW TARGETS PER AMM TASK 32-61-00-860-803.
" PRESSURIZE HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS #1, #2, AND #3 AND WAIT UNTIL SECU BITE(S) ARE
OVER (ABOUT 30 SECONDS). ENSURE HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS #1, #2, AND #3 REMAIN
SELECTED “ON” UNTIL END.
" REMOVE WOW TARGETS PER AMM TASK 32-61-00-860-805 (HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS #1 AND
#2 WILL SHUT DOWN).
" CONDUCT LANDING GEAR EXTENSION/RETRACTION PER AMM TASK 32-30-00-710-802 ...
BUT WAIT UNTIL MODULES HAVE SWITCHED, THEN PERFORM “CLOSE-OUT” SECTION.
" INSTALL WOW TARGETS PER AMM TASK 32-61-00-860-803 AND WAIT FOR SWITCHING
(ABOUT 5 SECONDS) - HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS #1 AND #2 WILL COME BACK.
TIP: THE KEY TO SUCCEED IS TO ACHIEVE THE WHOLE SEQUENCE IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS,
IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN HYDRAULIC PRESSURE AT OVER 1800 PSI; OTHERWISE, EICAS
MESSAGES WILL APPEAR AND MAY INTERRUPT THE SWITCHING PROCESS - WHICH WOULD
RESULT IN HAVING TO START THE SEQUENCE FROM THE BEGINNING.

Subject: Main Landing Gear Axle Protector

Bombardier has developed a tool (see photograph) to

protect the main landing gear during wheel/brake removal
and installation. Recent landing gear issues dictate a need
for this type of tooling.
The tool, comprising a protective nut (p/n G601R324306-
1) and sleeve (p/n G601R324305-1), has been approved
and tested by Bombardier. The tool is presently being
successfully used in the CRJ production facility.

Charging Policy
Versus Use of Blanket Purchase Order Numbers

Bombardier’s charging policy (ref. Service Letters RJ-SL-00-003 [CRJ100/200] and CRJ700-SL-00-
009 [CRJ700]) was published initially in December 1998. It was subsequently re-issued in June 2000
for the CRJ100/200, and in October 2001 for the CRJ700. In the past few weeks, the charging policy
has been re-enforced by the Technical Help Desk.
Since the application of this charging policy, the THD has observed that Purchase Order (PO)
numbers do not always come in automatically with the initial request. This forces Bombardier to
revisit each request to determine its legitimacy. This burden may require additional resources to
accomplish the work, both within Bombardier and for the customer.
The THD believes that the use of blanket PO numbers could help alleviate this situation. Some
customers have already provided blanket PO numbers. Typically, these numbers are renewed
periodically at the customer’s discretion. Additionally, tracking of a job performed against a specific
blanket PO number can be done easily using the data contained on the costing sheet accompanying
every new REO issued. Bombardier Aerospace would like to encourage the use of these blanket PO
numbers.

Supplemental Type Certificate News

Introduction
This feature in the ISAR is provided by Modification Services (MS) - a group in Bombardier
Aerospace Regional Aircraft dedicated to supporting Sales, Marketing, Customer Support, and
Program Management. The group offers a means to work with third parties to obtain non-standard
aircraft reconfigurations in a cost effective and expedient manner. Operators are supported through
the production of STCs for enhancement of the aircraft. Inquiries regarding the content of

Approved STCs
The following STCs have been recently completed and are now available.

➨ Photoluminescent Floor Path Lighting System (Luminescent Systems Inc.)

The photoluminescent Floor Proximity Emergency Escape Path Marking System (FPEEPMS),
developed by LSI received Transport Canada STC approval (ref: SA01-13) on December 5,
2001. FAA approval is expected in January 2002.
The STC introduces a photoluminescent emergency egress floor path lighting system. The un-
powered system simply needs to be exposed to general cabin lighting for 15 minutes before
flight. Significant savings in maintenance effort and aircraft weight, combined with improved
dispatch reliability, are the primary benefits of the system. Full system details are presented in
the CRJ STC Catalogue, available from any of the contacts named above.
The price for the basic kit is under $4000 US.

been published. Electronic copies of the TCG are available immediately. To
get yours, send a request to lbromley@dehavilland.ca.

IMPORTANT: When you see the page for your particular

airline and note errors or omissions, please send an e-mail
message or fax detailing the required changes to the
Editor (see below). The only way we can accurately
reflect staff assignments and contact details in the TCG
is through timely and continual feedback from both the
Operators and Bombardier front line support personnel.
