Reflection for Jam Board

This artifact was selected because it shows how technology can be intertwined into a

lesson allowing students to interact with it and make it their own. I have found that students

always prefer lessons that they can truly interact with and this jam board also shows just how

simple it is to create something along those lines, yet still be so engaging.

The jam board fits perfectly to InTASC standard number eight because it allowed me to explain

the concepts in different ways so that the various types of learners can understand it in their own

way. It also allowed learner collaboration, stimulated discussion, and allowed me to vary my role

throughout.

I learned that students really enjoy being able to use technology that allows them to be

part of the lesson, molding it as they go. Students are tired of just being taught, they want to

interact and know their input is considered. Using a jam board like this lets students lead the

lesson. For instance, when we used it to discuss social justice issues, I had no idea what topics

they were going to list. After they started listing many, this led into multiple discussions about

the different issues and how one could write about them, the different perspectives to take on

them, and so on. As more of them commented, others could build on top of that.Just by starting

with the jam board, the students wanted to continue the lesson because they had the power in it,

they felt they could actually have a say and wanted to.

This allowed me to really see the impact that interactive technology has on students and

overall education. I see now that we truly have moved into a modern age where technology is a

must to keep students engaged. This doesn’t mean it has to be the most advanced tech the world

has ever seen, just something like being able to virtually move post-it notes around can engage a

whole class. I think i will definitely be incorporating tech in most of my lessons from here on out

whether it be things like this in the virtual setting or a smartboard in an actual classroom. In

order to stay relevant, one must continue moving forward.

This artifact demonstrates my teaching skills by being able to allow the students to mold

the lesson how they want but still guide it where need be. Students, especially in high school,

need to be able to start taking the reins. By encouraging initiative, giving them the tools, and

being more of a guide then a teacher, they are able to gain these skills that come in handy in their

adult lives, almost like a Socratic seminar. By being a great moderator and giving them clues and

tips throughout, they really got to their conclusions they needed to and the points they wanted to

cover by working with each other rather than me giving them everything. This shows that I

properly understand and have the knowledge needed for a positive learning environment that the

students helped build.
