5 Intra-eNodeB Inter-BBP
UL CoMP
3 General Principles
Uplink coordinated multipoint reception (UL CoMP) converts inter-cell interference into
useful information by coordinating multiple cells based on the channel status and data
information shared between the cells. UL CoMP breaks through the limitation of single-cell
transmission on spectral efficiency, enhances network coverage, and improves cell
performance, especially cell edge UE performance.
UL CoMP is similar to multiple-antenna reception. The difference is that the former uses
multiple cells' antennas for reception while the latter uses a single cell's antennas for
reception. UL CoMP performs joint reception in multiple cells based on multiple-cell
interference rejection combining (IRC), which is similar to single-cell IRC. For details about
IRC, see MRC and IRC Receivers.
Table 3-1 describes the application scopes of UL CoMP functions. For the definitions of
type-1 and type-2 UEs, see 3.1 Definitions.
3.1 Definitions
UL CoMP Cells
Cells involved in UL CoMP are described as follows:
l Macro cell: a cell with high transmit power and large coverage radius, for example, a
cell served by a macro base station.
l Micro cell: a cell with low transmit power and small coverage radius, for example, a cell
served by a micro or LampSite eNodeB or a cell served by a macro eNodeB with low
transmit power.
l Cooperating cell: a cell working with the serving cell for joint reception.
NOTE
UL CoMP Types
The serving and cooperating cells can be macro, micro, or SFN cells. Accordingly, UL CoMP
has the following types:
l Macro-macro CoMP: performed between macro cells
l Micro-micro CoMP: performed between micro cells
l Macro-micro CoMP: performed between macro and micro cells
l SFN CoMP: performed between SFN cells or between non-SFN and SFN cells.
UL CoMP UEs
A UL CoMP UE is a UE whose signals are jointly received by the antennas of multiple cells.
There are two types of UL CoMP UEs:
l Type-1 UE: located in the overlapping area between the serving and neighboring cells.
UL CoMP for this type of UE is called type-1 UL CoMP. The gains of this type of UEs
come from signal combining gains.
l Type-2 UE: located in a cooperating cell and allocated physical resource blocks (PRBs)
that overlap the type-1 UE's PRBs. UL CoMP for this type of UE is called type-2 UL
CoMP. The gains of this type of UEs come from interference mitigation gains.
RSRP Difference
Reference signal received power (RSRP) difference (dB) = Neighboring cell RSRP (dBm) –
Serving cell RSRP (dBm)
Downlink RSRP measurement requires event A3 parameters to be set. For details, see 3.2.1
Downlink RSRP Measurement.
Uplink SRS measurement is recommended in macro-micro and SFN scenarios. For details,
see 3.2.2 Uplink SRS Measurement, 4.1.1.2 Macro-Micro CoMP, and 4.1.1.3 SFN CoMP.
For FDD, uplink DMRS measurement is recommended when network load is low and
enhanced intra-/inter-eNodeB UL CoMP is enabled. For details, see 3.2.3 Uplink DMRS
Measurement (FDD) and Enhanced Intra-/Inter-eNodeB UL CoMP (FDD).
l For the parameters related to event A3 used in UL CoMP, see Table 3-2.
l For other measurement parameters, which are the same as those for intra-frequency
handover, see Mobility Management in Connected Mode.
l For details about event A3, see section 5.5.4.4 "Event A3 (Neighbour becomes offset
better than PCell)" in 3GPP TS 36.331 V10.1.0.
NOTE
2. Run the MOD CELLSRSADAPTIVECFG command with the SRS Period Adaptive
Switch parameter set to OFF and the User SRS Period parameter set to ms40.
4 Intra-BBP UL CoMP
4.1 Principles
Intra-BBP UL CoMP is controlled by the UlJointReceptionSwitch option of the
CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch parameter. Unless otherwise stated, this option needs to
be selected for the serving and cooperating cells.
Intra-BBP UL CoMP can be used in macro-macro, micro-micro, macro-micro, and SFN
scenarios. The main procedures are measurement, UL CoMP entry, and UL CoMP exit.
Macro-micro CoMP can be enabled when both the UlJointReceptionSwitch and
UlHetnetJointReceptionSwitch options of the CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch
parameter are selected.
Macro-micro CoMP and micro-micro CoMP require that the radius of a micro cell be greater
than 300 m. That is, the Cell.CellRadius parameter must be set to a value greater than 300.
For FDD, only UEs using QPSK or 16QAM can be treated as type-1 UEs in 4R cells.
For TDD, there are the following constraints:
l UEs using QPSK or 16QAM can be treated as type-1 UEs. In some scenarios in 2R or
4R cells, UEs using 64QAM can also be treated as type-1 UEs.
l In 8R cells, UL CoMP can be performed only when uplink-downlink subframe
configuration 2 is used.
l If uplink-downlink subframe configuration 1 is used, UL CoMP is not recommended.
4.1.1 Measurement
RSRP measurement methods vary depending on the types of UL CoMP.
CoMP entry conditions but the downlink RSRP difference does not meet UL CoMP event A3
triggering conditions. If only downlink RSRP measurement results are used, event A3 cannot
be triggered and measurement results cannot be reported in the areas. Therefore:
l When the difference in CRS transmit power between macro and micro cells is less than 6
dB, downlink RSRP measurement results are used.
l When the difference in CRS transmit power between macro and micro cells is not less
than 6 dB, it is recommended that both downlink RSRP and uplink SRS measurement
results be considered. If either of the measurement results meets requirements, UL
CoMP can be performed. For details about how to configure uplink SRS measurement,
see 3.2.2 Uplink SRS Measurement.
Pmacro denotes the transmit power of the macro cell in dBm. Pmicro denotes the transmit power
of the micro cell in dBm. For details about how to calculate cell transmit power, see Cell
Management.
SRS resources in SFN cells are preferentially allocated to UEs for SFN-related measurement so that the
eNodeB can select target radio frequency (RF) modules and determine UE attributes. If there are many
UEs in SFN cells, SRS resources used for uplink RSRP measurement may be insufficient and the
number of UL CoMP UEs may be less than that in UL CoMP between non-SFN cells.
Type-1 UL CoMP
Figure 4-1 illustrates the type-1 UL CoMP entry procedure.
1. For details about step 1 in the preceding figure, see 4.1.1 Measurement.
2. A UE is identified as a type-1 UE when the RSRP difference is greater than a specified
threshold.
For FDD, the threshold is specified by different parameters in different scenarios:
– If downlink RSRP measurement is used, the threshold is specified by the
CellUlCompAlgo.UlCompA3Offset parameter.
– If uplink SRS or DMRS measurement is used, the threshold is specified by the
CellUlCompAlgo.UlCompUlRsrpOffset parameter.
For TDD, the threshold is specified by the CellUlCompAlgo.UlCompA3Offset
parameter.
3. The reported neighboring cells are sorted by RSRP difference in descending order and
selected as cooperating cells in that order for the type-1 UE.
4. For details about step 4 in the preceding figure, see Type-2 UL CoMP.
5. For details about step 5 in the preceding figure, see MRC and IRC Receivers.
For 2, note the following items:
l A type-1 UE can enter UL CoMP only when its serving cell has enough PRBs.
l A UE handed over from a source cell to an intra-frequency cell for a coverage reason is
directly identified as a type-1 UE, and the source cell is selected as a cooperating cell.
l VoIP UEs can be preferentially treated as type-1 UEs. For TDD, this function is
controlled by the VoipPrioSw option of the CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch
parameter, and this option needs to be selected only in the serving cell. For FDD, this
function is enabled by default, not under switch control.
l For TDD, UL CoMP UEs can be selected for pairing in MU-MIMO in common 8T8R
cells. This function is controlled by the SimplePairedCompSw option of the
CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch parameter.
For 3, note the following items:
l If the transmission delay between a neighboring cell's RRU and the BBU differs from
that between the serving cell's RRU and the BBU, the neighboring cell can be selected as
a cooperating cell only when the distances between the RRUs and BBU do not exceed 20
km. If the transmission delays are the same, there is no such restriction on the distances
between the RRUs and BBU.
l For details about how to select a cooperating cell, see Type-1 UL CoMP.
NOTE
The specific transmission delays are related to the fiber lengths between the BBU and RRUs.
Type-2 UL CoMP
In a cooperating cell of a type-1 UE, a UE can be identified as a type-2 UE if it is allocated
PRBs that overlap the type-1 UE's PRBs.
Type-2 UL CoMP can be performed if the serving cell of type-2 UE meets the following
conditions:
l This cell has sufficient PRBs.
l This cell's cooperating cell list includes the serving cell of the type-1 UE.
For details about type-2 UL CoMP, see Type-2 UL CoMP.
UL CoMP Rollback
UL CoMP rollback is controlled by the UlCompRollbackSwitch option of the
CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch parameter. This option takes effect only for the LBBPc.
NOTE
The eNodeB monitors the changes in the signals and interference in the serving and
neighboring cells served by the LBBPc in real time. If it is hard to reduce interference from
neighboring cells but UL CoMP is still performed, the uplink UE throughput will decrease.
When the rollback function is enabled, UL CoMP is not performed even when the entry
conditions are met.
l Intra-BBP UL CoMP
l Intra-eNodeB inter-BBP UL CoMP
l UL CoMP based on eNodeB coordination
3-Cell UL CoMP
If 3-cell UL CoMP is enabled in the serving cell, two cooperating cells can be selected for UL
CoMP. 3-cell UL CoMP is controlled by the UlJointReception3CellSwitch option of the
CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch parameter.
For FDD, this option needs to be selected only for the serving cell.
For TDD, this option also needs to be selected for the two cooperating cells. When uplink-
downlink subframe configuration 1 is used, 3-cell UL CoMP is not supported.
Type-1 UL CoMP
Type-1 UL CoMP selects a cooperating cell as follows:
1. Sorts the neighboring cells (B, C, and D) of the serving cell (A) in descending order by
RSRP difference based on event A3 reported by UE 1 in cell A. Assume that cell A has
sufficient PRBs and the sequence is cell B > cell C > cell D.
2. Removes cell B from the cooperating cell list as the distance between its RRU and BBU
is greater than 20 km while the RRUs of other cells are deployed together with the BBU.
3. Selects cell C as a cooperating cell.
Type-2 UL CoMP
Assume that UE 1 in cell A is a type-1 UE and cell B is a cooperating cell of UE 1. UE 2 in
cell B and UE 1 have overlapping PRBs. When cell B has sufficient PRBs, UE 2 enters type-2
UL CoMP as follows:
l If the cooperating cell list of cell B includes cell A, UE 2 can enter type-2 UL CoMP.
l If the cooperating cell list of cell B does not include cell A, UE 2 cannot enter type-2 UL
CoMP.
4.2.1 Benefits
Intra-BBP UL CoMP offers benefits when all of the following preconditions are met:
l Allows the use of MCSs indicated by larger indexes for UL CoMP UEs.
l Reduces the number of uplink TBs unsuccessfully transmitted in the initial transmission.
Increases the average uplink cell edge user l A larger proportion of UL CoMP UEs in
(CEU) throughput by up to 200%. a cell results in higher gains.
For TDD, intra-BBP UL CoMP offers the benefits listed in Table 4-3.
4.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
When a micro cell meets both of the following conditions, the timing advance (TA) value
increases by 2 microseconds, the values of L.RA.TA.UE.Index0 through
L.RA.TA.UE.Index11 are not smooth, and the TA value distribution is shifted rightwards.
l Any of the following options is selected:
– UlJointReceptionSwitch option of the CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch
parameter
– UlCompForVideoSwitch option of the CellAlgoSwitch.UplinkCompSwitch
parameter
– UlJROverRelaxedBHSw option of the ENodeBAlgoSwitch.OverBBUsSwitch
parameter

– UlDataJROverRelaxedBHSw option of the
ENodeBAlgoSwitch.OverBBUsSwitch parameter
– UlNonVoiceJROverRelaxedBHSw option of the
ENodeBAlgoSwitch.OverBBUsSwitch parameter
l Any of the following conditions is met:
– The cell power is less than or equal to 5 W (which is not checked in SFN
networking scenarios), the Cell.CellRadius parameter value is greater than 300, and
the CaUl2CCSwitch option of the CaMgtCfg.CellCaAlgoSwitch parameter is
deselected.
– The CaUl2CCSwitch option of the CaMgtCfg.CellCaAlgoSwitch parameter is
selected, and the MtaAlgSwitch option of the ENodeBAlgoSwitch.CaAlgoSwitch
parameter is also selected.

The cell bandwidth cannot be 5 MHz.
4.3.4 Networking
This function requires UL CoMP cells be served by the same BBP. It is recommended that
intra-frequency cells served by the RRUs installed on the same pole or tower should be bound
to the same BBP. Check whether such cells are bound to the same BBP by performing the
following steps:
Step 1 Run the LST EUCELLSECTOREQM command (for a macro eNodeB) or the LST
EUSECTOREQMGROUP command (for a LampSite eNodeB) to check the cell binding
status.
l If the baseband equipment IDs of the cells have the same value in the range of 0 to 23,
these cells have been bound to the same baseband equipment. No further operations are
required.
l If the baseband equipment IDs of the cells have different values in the range of 0 to 23,
bind these cells to the same baseband equipment and go to Step 3.
l If the baseband equipment IDs of the cells are all 255, these cells have not been bound to
any baseband equipment. Go to Step 2.
Step 2 Run the ADD BASEBANDEQM command to add baseband equipment. The baseband
equipment ID must be different from any other assigned IDs.
Step 3 Run the MOD EUCELLSECTOREQM command (for a macro eNodeB) or the MOD
EUSECTOREQMGROUP command (for a LampSite eNodeB) to bind the cells to the same
baseband equipment. Then, the cells are reestablished for the binding to take effect.
You can run the DSP CELL command for confirmation. If Primary BBP information is
consistent with Served BBP Information, different cells on the same site are configured on
the same BBP.
----End
l To ensure UL CoMP performance, it is recommended that the ISD do not exceed 1000
m. ISD in UL CoMP refers to the distance between the RF modules of the serving and
cooperating cells.
l There are no PCI conflicts. If there are, solve the problem first. To enable the reporting
of PCI collision or confusion, you are advised to turn on the PCI conflict alarm switch.
l There are no exceptions such as board restart or reset. If there are, the cells are
reestablished and the binding relationships between cells and BBPs may change. As a
result, the performance of UL CoMP may be affected.
l For FDD, there is no intermodulation interference. If there is, solve the problem first. For
details about intermodulation interference, contact Huawei engineers.
l For FDD, there is no flow control on the main control board's CPU. If there is, UL
CoMP is disabled during flow control and enabled again after flow control.

Using Signaling
You can use signaling to determine whether this function has taken effect for type-1 UEs
when all A3-based functions except UL CoMP are disabled.
Step 1 Enable a UE to access a cell. Check the RRC_CONN_RECFG message (as shown in Figure
4-3) for the UL CoMP A3 measurement configuration. If the A3 offset in the message is
consistent with the CellUlCompAlgo.UlCompA3Offset parameter value, this function has
been enabled.
Step 2 Move the UE to the overlapping area between two cells, causing the UE to report event A3.
This UE is identified as a type-1 UE. Among the reported cells in the UL CoMP application
scope, a neighboring cell with the strongest signal strength is selected as a cooperating cell, as
shown in Figure 4-4.
Step 3 Use the UE to perform uplink FTP services, and check the uplink throughput. If the uplink
throughput is higher than that before function activation, the function has taken effect.

– If the BBU3910 is used, there is no such restriction.
It is recommended that intra-frequency cells served by RRUs installed on the same pole
or tower be bound to BBPs in the same connection set.
l For FDD, it is recommended that high-order UL CoMP be enabled if the BBU3910 is
used.

6.1 Principles
UL CoMP based on eNodeB coordination is controlled by the
UlJointReceptionOverBBUsSwitch option of the ENodeBAlgoSwitch.OverBBUsSwitch
parameter.
The principles of this function are similar to those of intra-BBP UL CoMP, involving RSRP
measurement, entry, exit, and enhancement. For details, see 4.1 Principles.
For TDD, UL CoMP based on eNodeB coordination can be performed only when uplink-
downlink subframe configuration 2 is used.
6.2.1 Benefits
For FDD, UL CoMP based on eNodeB coordination offers the benefits listed in Table 6-1 and
Table 6-2.
For TDD, the benefit analysis for UL CoMP based on eNodeB coordination is the same as
that for intra-BBP UL CoMP. For details, see 4.2.1 Benefits.
6.2.2 Impacts

7.1 Principles
This section describes the principles of inter-eNodeB UL CoMP based on relaxed backhaul.
This function is controlled by the UlNonVoiceJROverRelaxedBHSw option of the
ENodeBAlgoSwitch.OverBBUsSwitch parameter.
l This function selects only UEs using QPSK or 16QAM in the uplink for UL CoMP.
l This function selects UEs with data services for type-1 rather than type-2 UL CoMP.
l This function takes the CellUlCompAlgo.UlCompA3OffsetForRelaxedBH parameter
value as the A3 offset in the measurement phase.
l This function can select a maximum of one IP-RAN-based inter-BBU neighboring cell
for 3-cell inter-eNodeB UL CoMP based on relaxed backhaul.
l This function does not support high-order UL CoMP.
l This function does not support enhanced intra-/inter-eNodeB UL CoMP.
l The eNodeB checks transmission load when selecting a cooperating cell:
– When the eNodeB detects that the eX2 link is congested, it performs back-pressure
on joint reception of data services over this link and removes the corresponding
cooperating cell.
– When the eNodeB detects that the eX2 link is no longer congested, it cancels the
back-pressure and restores the cooperating cell.
– When the eNodeB detects that the eX2 link is overloaded, it removes this link and
the cooperating cell.
For details about transmission load control and transmission congestion control, see
Transport Resource Management.
7.2.1 Benefits
Inter-eNodeB UL CoMP based on relaxed backhaul offers benefits when all of the following
conditions are met:
The uplink CEU throughput increases by up to 20% after this function is enabled.
7.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
The uplink IBLER increases slightly after this function is enabled.
In relaxed backhaul scenarios, when inter-eNodeB UL CoMP and other inter-eNodeB features
(such as CA) are enabled together, these features share transmission bandwidths. When the
transmission bandwidths are insufficient, the delays increase and the gains of these features
are affected.

Boards
The board requirements or constraints are as follows:
l The LBBPd, UBBPd, and UBBPe allow for this function performed between two cells or
among three non-4R cells.
l The UBBPd and UBBPe are recommended while the LBBPd is not recommended due to
insufficient processing capability.
RF Modules
No requirements
7.3.4 Networking
The requirements for network planning are as follows:
l Inter-BBU cells need to be planned to ensure inter-BBU route connectivity. eX2 links
between BBUs are required. For details, see eX2 Self-Management.
l To ensure UL CoMP performance, it is recommended that the ISD do not exceed 1000
m. ISD in UL CoMP refers to the distance between the RF modules of the serving and
cooperating cells.
l Check whether there is intermodulation interference. If so, solve the problem. For details
about intermodulation interference, contact Huawei engineers.
l Check whether there are PCI conflicts between intra-frequency neighboring cells. If so,
the performance of UL CoMP will be affected. You are advised to turn on the PCI
conflict alarm switch so that PCI collision or confusion can be reported.
This function shares system resources with SFN, CA, and CSPC.
When a BBP is restarted or reset, the cells are reestablished. In this case, the binding
relationships between cells and BBPs may change and the performance of UL CoMP may be
affected.
7.3.5 Others
None
Other parameters used for optimization are the same as those for intra-eNodeB inter-BBP UL
CoMP. For details, see 5.4.1.1 Data Preparation.
Using Counters
If the values of the counters listed in Table 7-3 are not 0, this function has taken effect.
This function has taken effect only when the counter values are greater than those before
function activation if inter-eNodeB VoLTE CoMP has been enabled before this function is
enabled.
