Hi Tammy,
We need to make sure that we are on schedule in our preparations for our opening ceremony.
First, Romeo needs to change his design for the opening ceremony poster. Can you complete
the checklist that I have attached to give him feedback? Look at the minutes of the committee
meeting and listen to our video conference. Also, have a look at Romeo’s poster.
Second, could you please write an introductory speech for me? I will need it on the day of the
opening ceremony. Please start the speech by introducing who I am. Make sure that you say
something about the facilities we have at Art Sphere and introduce our VIP guest, Mr. James
Wong, to the audience. You can take a look at the minutes of the committee meeting and the
notes you took from our video conference meeting.
Finally, I want you to write a description of the two art grants — the Gibbon Foundation and
the Spector Art Grant for our website. In the description, mention:
• the funding organisation (what it is)
• the kind of art it supports
• the pros and cons of using it as a source of funds for artists
Take a look at the personal blog of Susanna Lee as well as the notes you took from our video
conference meeting.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Olaf

1. Art Sphere
Olaf Law told the committee members that Art Sphere would be located in an industrial
building in Tai Po. In addition to the many studios and an event space, there will be a café in
the building.
Olaf Law hoped that the new Art Sphere would change the way artists are seen in Hong Kong.
Vivian Ng added that the new facility would provide artists with a low-cost place to showcase
their work.
Vivian Ng said the current image on the poster was wrong. It should be replaced with an image
of the new Art Sphere building. The committee members agreed.
Vivian Ng said she was unhappy with the background colour as it was not eye-catching
enough. She proposed that it should be changed to yellow. The committee members agreed.

Hey Tammy, regarding the introductory speech, you may want to say a few
words about our aims. And the studios too! It’s an exciting feature.

Tammy
Should I say something about the rent? 2.08 PM
Olaf
Yes, why not? Artists can rent our studios to showcase their work.
That’s worth mentioning too. 2.10 PM
Olaf
Okay. And don’t forget to introduce our VIP guest, Mr. James Wong, to the
audience. Some of them may not know who he is. 2.11 PM

Currently living in Hong Kong, Susanna plans to have her first solo exhibition soon.
However, it costs money to hold a solo exhibition. For struggling artists like Susanna, it
is hard to come up with the funds. Thankfully, there are organisations that offer art grants
that support artists in creating their work.
Susanna plans to apply for an art grant from the Gibbon Foundation (www.
gibbonfoundation.com.hk). She is hopeful. ‘I think there’s a good chance for me to get
funds from the Gibbon Foundation as it supports art projects that can be touched, heard
or experienced. My solo exhibition will be an exhibition of my work using mixed media,
painting, music and sculpture,’ Susanna said.

Hi Tammy,
First, write an email replying to Hans So. Based on what you know about the Gibbon
Foundation and the Spector Art Grant, tell him which one is more suitable for him and explain
why. You may want to say something about the pros and cons of each grant. Have a look
at his email and the personal blog of Susanna Lee. Take a look at the notes from our video
conference meeting too.
Second, I want you to write an advice page to be put on our website. I really like Esther’s
suggestions on an online portfolio. Could you summarise her suggestions? Explain why artists
should have their online portfolios. I spoke to George Benson, a local artist, on this topic. Take
a look at my interview with him. Don’t forget to look at your notes from the video conference.
Finally, I want you to write an announcement to be posted on our website. Lately, our
organisation has been the subject of a scam. I want you to alert the public not to respond to
fraudulent notifications. In the announcement, mention:
• how the scam works
• our position (please clarify what Art Sphere will NOT do)
• advice for the public (keep it brief)
You can find out more about the scam from the minutes of meeting of our committee members
and my draft report. Also, you should be able to get some good advice from the website of
Scam Busters.
Best regards,
Olaf

‘Oh, I’m going to apply for the Gibbon Foundation too! I’m a struggling artist. Art
funds are a lifesaver!’
p. 5
Dear Olaf,
I was referred to you by my friend, Alex Kwok, who is a member of Art Sphere. I would like
to ask you a few questions about applying for an art grant for my art project.
Currently, I am working for an art installation project called ‘Social Problems’. It is a social
issue art project. My idea is to transform a space into an interactive environment, and my
project involves paintings, sculptures and music. I have been working on this art project for
two years and suddenly, I realised that I have run out of money.
My friend suggested that I apply for an art grant, either from the Gibbon Foundation or the
Spector Art Grant. I would like to hear what you have to say about these two organisations.
To be honest with you, I need at least $50 000 for my art project. So, which art grant should I
apply for?
Best regards,
Hans So

1. Scam
Olaf Law reported to the committee members that our organisation had been the subject of a
scam.
Esther Kwan expressed concern and asked how the scam worked. Olaf Law replied that he
would give a report on the scam soon but briefly explained that the perpetrators claimed to be
our employees and they contacted the public via Facebook, email or phone.
Esther Kwan added that Art Sphere would never notify individuals that they were
recommended for a grant through social media. Olaf Law agreed. Esther Kwan also added that
Art Sphere would never request money before releasing funds.
Olaf Law and Betty Ng to give a report on the scam by next week.

Report on Scam
Scam:
Art Sphere has been the subject of a scam.

Case study:
Tiffany Fung’s Experience (Artist)
‘Well, this person phoned me … can’t remember his name … anyway he claimed to
be Art Sphere employee. I’d heard of Art Sphere … so I believed him. He said to me,
“Congratulations! You’ve received a grant from us.” Of course, I was happy … as I needed
money as I was working on an art project. “But you must provide seed money before we can
release the funds,” he continued. I asked him why. He said, “It’s kind of like a processing fee.”
What! A processing fee … wait a minute … he thought I was stupid. It sounded like a scam.
“No thanks!” I just hung up the phone.’
p. 8
Simply responding to them just confirms that you are interested, making you a target
for more scams. Some people respond to a scammer to waste their time. It is not a
good idea to do this.
Remember that scammers are not pranksters; they are criminals. It is not a good idea
to get them angry as you don’t know what the consequences will be.
You don’t know how dangerous a situation is. People have died or lost all their
savings responding to scammers.
p. 9
Olaf: Okay, turning to another topic that I know you have a lot of knowledge about. I
understand it’s getting very difficult for artists like yourself to get art grants.
George: Yes, because of the pandemic and the poor economic environment, most funds
have almost dried up. But it’s still possible to get funds these days from global
organisations like the Gibbon Foundation.
Olaf: What advice would you give to artists who are planning to apply for art grants?
George: Well, art grants are a total financial lifesaver. As I said before, it’s important that they
have an online portfolio to showcase their work. Grant committee will want to see
your work, so make sure that your online portfolio is in great shape.
Olaf: Yes, I agree. In this day and age, an artist without an online portfolio is selling
themselves short.
George: Yes, your online portfolio is like your own virtual gallery. But it’s essential that you
should include the very best out of your body of work.
George: Yes, I mean, choose works from different mediums, subjects and themes.
