Dear Liz,

There are a few tasks I need you to do.

Leaflet

First, I’d like you to complete the leaflet for the new tour we are going to introduce. Some of the
details are already filled in, but you’ll need to complete the rest. Please refer to your notes from our
meeting, the email from our company sales manager, Edward Chiu, and the email exchange I had
with the tour operator, Marjory Wong.

Magazine article

Second, I’d like you to write a magazine article about the Exotic Rainforest Resort in Costa Rica.
Start with our announcement about the resort. Talk about who the resort is mainly suitable for and
describe the special features of the resort. Talk about what types of accommodations it provides.
Mention how customers can make bookings and what kind of special deal customers can get. Take a
look at the meeting notes, the email from Edward and our company web page. You may also find
useful information in the blog entry by Lily Singh, the professional travel blogger. Don’t forget to
refer to our previous text messages as well.

Listicle

Finally, I’d like you to write a listicle on the benefits of tropical holidays for our company website.
Start with a brief introduction then talk about the three benefits which you’ll find in the extract from
the article in Travel Comfort magazine and Lily Singh’s travel blog entry.

Thanks,

Andrew

Dear Andrew,

We think it’s reasonable to charge each customer $10,000 for joining the new Cook Islands tour because
we are the only travel agency offering island tours. So we want to put up the price. However, the tour
only comes with the flights and accommodation and guests will need to pay for their own meals and
drinks.

As for the partnership with the Exotic Rainforest Resort in Costa Rica, we are still liaising with their
sales and marketing teams regarding the prices for staying at the two accommodations they offer. There
should be some sort of discount for customers who book the resort through our website. I will let you
know once the details are settled.

Regards,

Edward

For the first day of the tour, I didn’t plan much since I assume the guests would be tired after a long

three days of adventure, they will go on a tour to watch whales the next day. What do you think about

Tropical holidays

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, you should consider going on a tropical holiday. One
of the best things is that tropical destinations such as Costa Rica and Bora Bora are not as crowded as
tourist destinations such as Japan and Singapore, which means that they can be more fun and relaxing.

Another benefit is that you can easily go to the nearby natural attractions without commuting because
these tropical holiday resorts are located in nature. For example, many resorts in Costa Rica are found
near the rainforest, while there are many resorts built in the national parks in the Caribbean.

The next time you plan for a trip, make sure you also check out some tropical destinations. The
travelling experience may surprise you!

Travelling is life
Lily’s travel blog

My first trip to Costa Rica

When I arrived at the Exotic Rainforest Resort in Costa Rica, I was thrilled. As I entered, I could notice
that they used natural and sustainable materials to build the resort. For example, I could spot the wooden
floor and ceiling. I was really impressed since I’m an environmentalist myself.

The treehouse that I was staying in was amazing! This is the first time of my life that I woke up
surrounded by nature in a trip. I enjoyed listening to the chirping sounds of birds and crickets, they
somehow put me at ease. The whole natural environment was calm and relaxing, which is why I chose a
tropical destination like Costa Rica in the first place.

Aside from the accommodations, the resort also takes guests on private tours to observe amazing Costa
Rican wildlife animals such as toucans and margays which in the nearby rainforest.

Text messages between Andrew Cheung and Liz Sung

Andrew
Hi Liz, I just want to remind you to include some
specific examples to elaborate on the reasons for going
on tropical vacations (if needed).

Liz
OK, got it. Oh btw, for the article about the Costa
Rica resort, should I mention the activities organized
by the resort as well?

Andrew
Oh yeah, we have to. In our last meeting, I forgot to
mention that the Cook Islands are also known for their
exotic tropical bird species and relaxing lifestyle. Could
you please add them to the leaflet?

Liz
OK, no problem!

From: Andrew Cheung
Subject: Things to do

Dear Liz,

I need your help with some tasks, as follows.

First, I’d like you to write an annual report on the company’s performance. You should have three
main sections:
• Popularity of tropical destinations (compare the figures for 2019 with those in 2023 and state
the travelling trend)
• Sales (mention the increase in our annual net income and indicate the time of the year with
the best sales and explain why)
• Feedback (summarize the top two comments we got)
Refer to your meeting notes, the extract from the company’s annual review, clients’ feedback on our
forum website and Kate Nash’s blog entry. Please also mention how we can adapt to the new ways of
travelling in the conclusion.
Task 7
Next, write an email reply to Samson Yuen on behalf of Petra Wong, the customer service manager
of the Exotic Rainforest Resort. Apologize to Mr Yuen and describe how each issue he mentioned
will be resolved. Tell Mr Yuen how he will be compensated. You may have a look at your meeting
notes and the memo from Petra Wong.

Finally, I want you to write an article about how different travelling is nowadays. Focus on three
challenges related to travelling: climate change, travel restrictions and travel prices. Give examples of
how climate change has affected the tourism industry. Tell what resorts and hotels suggest guests do
before arrival. State what visitors should do before travelling. Compare the past and present prices for
flights and accommodation. Refer to the extract from the article in a tourism journal, the article about
travel restrictions and Kate Nash’s blog entry.

Thanks,

Andrew

Subject: Disappointing stay

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have recently stayed at the Exotic Rainforest Resort when I was on a trip in Costa Rica. I cannot
express enough how disappointed I am with the facilities and services your resort provides. I am left
rather underwhelmed as your resort did not live up to my expectations.

For one thing, I understand that your resort is supposed to be environmentally friendly, however, I find it
unacceptable that there is no cooling equipment in the resort, especially when the weather is scorching
hot during the day.

Another issue I noticed is the problem of food waste. When I was having buffet dinner at your
restaurant, I saw some guests took a lot of food to their table and were unable to finish it. It was
frustrating to have witnessed that because I could not believe your resort does not have measures in
place to deal with a common environmental problem like food waste when it claims to be one of the
most eco-friendly resorts in Costa Rica.

I hope you take the necessary action to resolve these issues. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Samson Yuen

Memo from Petra Wong

MEMO
Re: Mr Yuen’s email

Hi Liz,
I know you are handling the complaints from Samson Yuen. To address his complaints, we have done
the following and come up with possible solutions:
• We conducted a temperature test and measured the air temperature in the resort for a week. It
was found that the air temperature of the resort is about 34 degrees Celsius on average during the
day. Because of such hot temperature, we have decided to install ceiling fans (powered by solar
power) in different areas of the resort. Explain to him that we can only run them during the day
because of the kind of resort we are and our company aims—encourage responsible travel and
reduce environmental damage caused by tourism. Tell him that we will let him stay at our deluxe
villa for a night for free to compensate him.
• We have looked into the problem of food waste at the resort. From our observation, we did find
that some guests take too much food. To deal with this, guests who cannot finish their food will
need to pay for it. It will cost HK$100 for each kilogram of leftover food.

Extract from Wild Explorations’ annual review

The line graphs below show the number of customers travelling to popular tourist destinations and those
travelling to tropical destinations. By 2023, the number of customers travelling to tropical destinations
increased significantly compared to 2019. It shows that more customers have the desire to travel to
unique tropical destinations. Note that figures from 2020 to 2022 might not accurately reflect the
travelling pattern or behaviour of customers due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Clients’ feedback on forum website

While we were preparing for the statistics for the company’s annual performance, we also looked at the
clients’ feedback on our services on our forum website. Here are some that we thought were interesting
and encouraging to note.

‘Our trip to Costa Rica was great. Our travel agent, Annie, listened so carefully to our requests and made
everything happen for us, including a really cool deep-sea fishing excursion. We’re already looking at
booking our next adventure with Wild Explorations … maybe to Bora Bora next time around!’

Jimmy Yang

‘It turns out that tropical vacations aren’t really my thing, but that’s not the fault of Wild Explorations.
Regardless, I always felt like I was listened to, and all of the things I wanted included in my Costa Rica
trip were there. I was also imrpessed by its pricing, which was a lot more reasonable than the other
travel agencies.

Wendy Beal

‘Compared to all of the other travel agencies in town, Wild Explorations had the best prices. However, I
wish there were more options for tropical destinations.’

Gina Rodriguez

‘Our travel agent Mandy was awesome. You could tell that she understood our needs and took them
seriously. She also found us some really unique experiences in Costa Rica, like ziplining and rainforest
exploration.’

Oliver Liu

‘The prices and the customer service were top-notch. You won’t find better deals anywhere, especially
for what you get. We can’t wait to plan our next trip to Bora Bora!’

Jason Lindemann

‘We travelled to Costa Rica for the summer holidays. The prices were reasonable and my agent was very
attentive. He booked the accommodation for us and arranged activities that we like. There’s just nothing
much I can complain about.’

International Travel article about travel restrictions

Travel restrictions

We would like to give you an update on the travel restrictions of different destinations as of May 2023.

Popular tourist destinations such as South Korea and Japan are open to all travellers since March and
April respectively. Travellers are no longer required to show proof of three doses of vaccination and a
negative PCR test result within 72 hours prior to arrival. Quarantine is also not mandatory. Though all
travel restrictions were lifted, hotels and resorts still suggest that travellers do a rapid test before arriving
and monitor their health during the stay.

While most travel restrictions were lifted for some tropical destinations such as Barbados and the
Bahamas, travellers are still required to fill in a health declaration form prior to arrival.

The information above only provides the travel restrictions and requirements for some destinations.
Different countries or cities have their own travel restrictions and requirements which are usually
updated and amended regularly. You are reminded to check them prior to your travel.

Climate change and tourism

by Neil Ford

Sea-level rise is one of the major effects of climate change that takes a heavy toll on the tourism
industry. It causes damage to tourist sites, natural attractions, and resorts. When they are damaged,
tourists are less likely to visit the tourist destination. The business of travel agencies is also affected
because they have to reduce the prices of their tour packages to attract more people to join.

Rising temperatures is another significant effect of climate change. The number of marine organisms in
coastal areas are reduced. For example, many coral reefs in Australia are degraded due to the warming
water temperature. The rising temperatures also shorten the skiing season in cold places in Europe and
North America. As winter became milder and shorter, the number of visitors staying at the ski resorts
have reduced and the profit gained by these ski resorts have reduced as well.

As we can see, some tourist destinations have become less appealing to tourists because of the negative
impact brought on by climate change which in turn could be a reason why tourists don’t visit these
tourist destinations.

Blog entry by Kate Nash

How the pandemic affects my travel plans

In 2018, I decided to quit my job as an accountant to become a full-time travel blogger. For the first year
of blogging, I travelled to many places in the world which had been on my bucket list. Then came
2020—the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Countries, one by one, started to enforce travel
restrictions which completely messed up all my travel plans for the year.

Now that all travel restrictions are lifted. You would think it’s a good time to travel again. But no, the
prices for flights to Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore and Thailand have gone up from HK$2,000
to HK$3,000, that’s like a lot of money.

While the prices for flights are increased, so are the prices for hotels and resorts. Before the pandemic, I
could easily book a cheap hotel room overseas for about HK$500 and now I have to pay triple of that
price. This is absolutely absurd!

I can see that the travelling trend of people has changed after the pandemic. It’s important that those who
work in the tourism industry stay flexible to keep up with these changes.
