HYPOTHESIS AND
THE TWO TYPES OF
HYPOTHESIS
A hypothesis is a proposed
explanation for a phenomenon.
For a hypothesis to be a
scientific hypothesis, the
scientific method requires that
one can test it.
There are basically two types,
namely, null hypothesis and
alternative hypothesis.
a. NULL HYPOTHESIS
type of hypothesis used in
statistics that proposes that
there is no difference between
certain characteristics of a
population
b. ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS
alternative hypothesis is a position
that states something is happening,
a new theory is preferred instead
of an old one
TEST TYPES
STEPS IN TESTING
There are 5 main steps in
hypothesis testing:
CRITICAL VALUE
SIGNIFICANCE LEVEL
REJECTION REGION
CRITICAL VALUES ARE ESSENTIALLY
CUT-OFF VALUES THAT DEFINE
REGIONS WHERE THE TEST
STATISTIC IS UNLIKELY TO LIE.
THE SIGNIFICANCE LEVEL, ALSO
DENOTED AS ALPHA OR Α, IS THE
PROBABILITY OF REJECTING THE
NULL HYPOTHESIS WHEN IT IS TRUE.
A REJECTION REGION (A.K.A.
CRITICAL REGION) IN A NULL
HYPOTHESIS STATISTICAL TEST IS A
PART OF THE PARAMETER SPACE
SUCH THAT OBSERVING A RESULT
THAT FALLS UNDER IT WILL LEAD TO
THE REJECTION OF A THE NULL
HYPOTHESIS.
HYPOTHESIS
State your research hypothesis
as a null (Ho) and alternate
(Ha) hypothesis.
Collect data in a way designed
to test the hypothesis.
Perform an appropriate
statistical test.
Decide whether the null
hypothesis is supported or
refuted.
Present the findings in your
results and discussion section.
Though the specific details
might vary, the procedure
you will use when testing a
hypothesis will always follow
some version of these steps.
