SCRIPT (MT Practice lab)

Good day! This is your future medical technologist, Manelli Faten. And today, I will demonstrate two basic
practices that a medical technologists must able to perform in their workplace. These practices are the
steps on how to demonstrate proper handwashing and proper donning and doffing of personal protective
equipment. Okay, let’s start with the handwashing. But before that, let me talk about the importance of
handwashing or also known as hand hygiene. Handwashing is a basic act to remove viruses, bacteria or
other microorganisms or other harmful and unwanted substances stuck to hands. It is done by cleaning
one’s hand with soap and water. Handwashing with soap, often, prevents the spread of many diseases;
also, it has a variety of levels and types. However, I will be focusing only on the demonstration of the
twelve steps of handwashing, okay let’s get it on! Today, I am here at my grandfather’s resort, because
we don’t have a faucet on our home. So basically, in any clinical workplace we have different types of
faucet, we have foot operated faucet, hand operated faucet and elbow and knee operated faucet. Now, I
will use this hand operated faucet because this is the only available faucet here. Alright, first open the
faucet using the elbow of my hand, I’ll make sure that the flow of water is not strong enough to create
water splash because a small drop of water coming from the sink may contain harmful substances. After,
my hands are wet. I will now apply a liquid soap using my elbow again, now after I applying it, I may now
start rubbing my hands. First is palm to palm/ then back of my hands/ then rub palms with interlaced
fingers/ next rub back of fingers, as you can see my fingers are interlocked/ next I will rub each of my
thumb/ then rub the tips of my fingers in a circular motion/ rub my wrists/ afterwards, rinse hands,I make
sure that I have a space for my waist away from the sink, in order to avoid any drop of water splash/ then
turn off the faucet using my elbow/ last, I will now dry my hands using disposable towel, start with the
wrist up to the top of the finger after that I will use the back and the bottom part of the towel to dry my left
right hand. And that’s it, my demonstration of proper handwashing.

Okay, now let’s start with the proper donning and doffing of personal protective equipment. But before
that let me talk about the importance of taking PPE accordingly? Well, personal protective equipment
refers to anything used to lessen the risk of harm to the health and safety of worker, in a healthcare
setting, PPE is used to create barrier between a health worker and any infectious and harmful agents.
Following the correct procedure of doffing PPE will help to control and prevent infection, thus doffing PPE
will protect my clothing, skin and mucous membranes from contamination. Now let’s begin with the
donning of PPE. First, is to identify and gather the proper ppe to put on, it is very important to ensure that
the choice of gown size is correct. for the second step, perform hand hygiene using hand sanitizer it
should be done for atleast 20 seconds, for the third step put on the isolation gown, since I don’t have the
isolation gown, I may now used my lab gown. For the fourth step, put on NIOSH-approved N95 filtering
facepiece respirator, since I don’t have it, I will now use facemask as my alternative, now as you can see
my mask has loops, I will hook them appropriately around my ears, while pinching the middle tip of the
mask. After the hook, I will now extend it under my chin, so that both my nose and mouth are protected.
After putting on the facemask, I will now put on my face shield, I’ll make sure that it does not affect the fit
of my facemask; finally I have now full face coverage. For the fifth step, putting on a glove, now I make
sure that my gloves cover the cuff or wrist of my gown. And that’s it your healthcare personnel now is
ready to enter the patient room!!!

Okay after the donning of PPE, I will now proceed for the doffing of PPE. This is a critical part, that’s why I
need an extra care doffing my PPE. For the first step, is to remove my gloves, it is very important to
ensure glove removal does not cause additional contamination of my hands, gloves can be removed
using more than one technique, this one is for glove in glove technique, and for this part is the bird beak
technique. For the second step, is to remove my gown, I will now unsnap all my buttons, so I do it with
gentle manner, while avoiding a forceful movement. I will reach up to the shoulders and carefully pull
gown down and away from my body and dispose it in trash receptacle. I may now exit in patient room and
perform hand hygiene. After performing hand hygiene, I will now carefully remove my face shield by
grabbing the headband strap and pulling upwards and away from my head. Take note, I do not touch the
front of my face shield. Next step, is to remove and discard my facemask, take note again, I do not touch
the front of my facemask, now I carefully unhook from my ears and pull away from my face without
touching the front. Last, after removing my facemask, I will now again perform hygiene and before putting
it on again. And that’s it the steps on how to safely take off the PPE. Thank you for watching, see ya ‘
again for the next session!! This is Manelli.
