2. Refer to the power point presentation ( lesson 1) read the contributions of Charles Darwin,
Sigmund Freud & Nicholaus Copernicus and answer the following questions:
A. What is Darwin’s contribution to modern science? Explain.

Charles Darwin’s contribution is his Theory of Evolution by Means of Natural Selection. In this
theory he provided that organisms evolved and changed through heritable physical and
behavioral traits. This paved the way for a scientific reason as to where and how humans
came to be. This theory is well supported by scientific evidences such as genetics,
paleontology and biology. In this theory, it pointed out that all life on earth are interrelated
and explained that diversity exists because of the changes of traits through adapting in an
environment. Today, this theory is still the core to human evolution.

B. How can you describe Freudian idea as a scientist?

The Freudian idea was quite uncommon for a scientist as it was influential. Freud’s means of
obtaining the ideas were questionable in a sense that it does not strictly adhere to scientific
methods of discovery and more on its content. However, he was imaginative and
spearheaded the innovation of psychology starting with the focus on the study of our
unconscious mind. Through this, science was able to move forward with the idea on how the
unconscious mind affects the behaviour, actions and decisions of peoples.

C. How did Heliocentric theory or Copernican theory has changed our understanding about the
universe?

It changed the understanding from an earth-centred universe to a sun-centred universe.

Although this theory was blocked by the church because it did not support the idea of the
church, this theory managed to correct what is believed in the bible that the earth is the
center of the universe and provided a reality. It was able to change the understanding that
the world stood still where it really rotated in an axis. This also paved the way for more
discoveries in our solar system such as the sun only being one of millions of starts, and that
there is more than one galaxy.
