The second goal is to pass the national certification test.
I have not felt prepared up to this point, but as I
continue my learning it becomes clear that I am getting
ready. The NIC has another upside in that it will inspire
my mentee to want the same. I think the NIC is the best
way an interpreter proves to the world they can

The NIC has always seemed like a big bad scary test, I

The first goal I established was one of the weaknesses on my strength assessment. I would like to
improve on my communication and feel that my mentor/mentee relationship will be a perfect way to start the
improvements. I look forward to passing on the knowledge I have from both the people of the Deaf community
and things I have learned through the years. Interpreting has many nuances that school does not teach a student.
I wish to change that by bestowing the knowledge gained from experience to the mentee. This goal will also
allow me to improve my communication thus improving how I interpret. Improving my interpreting is
beneficial for myself, the community, and mentee.
The second goal is something I have been very intimidated by for a long time. As time continues, I am
granted the opportunity to work with many other interpreters. Those experiences have helped build my
confidence and motivate me to take the test on. I am also not so afraid of failure. I have failed many things in
the past that have helped create who I am now. If I fail, then obviously I have more to learn. I refuse to be my
own worst enemy! Passing the NIC will also inspire future interpreters that I work with. It will show that
interpreters should have a minimum standard of national certification.
