Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any work of the Government of the
Philippines. However, prior approval of the government agency or office wherein the work is created shall be
necessary for exploitation of such work for profit. Such agency or office may, among other things, impose as a
condition the payment of royalties.
Borrowed materials (i.e., songs, stories, poems, pictures, photos, brand names, trademarks, etc.) included in
this module are owned by their respective copyright holders. Every effort has been exerted to locate and seek
permission to use these materials from their respective copyright owners. The publisher and authors do not represent
nor claim ownership over them.

What’s In
In the previous lesson, some materials tend to float or sink when placed in water.
To check whether you fully understand the lesson, answer the activity below.
DIRECTIONS
Given the list of materials in column1, examine each material and tell
what are they made of, write you observations in column 2
Predict whether the materials will FLOAT or SINK in water then write your
answer in column 3.
Place the materials / objects in water. Tell whether they sink or floats in
water. Write your answers in column 4
Answer the essential questions below.
\
Observation
MATERIALS / Prediction When placed in water
(What is the object
OBJECTS (SINK / FLOAT) (SINK / FLOAT)
made of?)
1. stone
2. plastic spoon
3. coin
4. cotton balls
5. rubber band
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
1. How many of your predictions are correct? ___________________________________________________
2. Look at the materials that sank. What characteristics are common to all of them?
________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. What do you think is the reason why some materials sink and others float in water?

What’s New
Read the comic strip below. It’s their field trip and they are about to learn how to create their
own souvenir by using a shapeless clay and turning it into a beautiful piece of art. Do you share
the same dilemma as the child in the story?
What is it?

Change is happening all around us all the time. Matter is a term we use to any type of material,
anything that has mass and takes up space. So, we can say that everything around us is made
up of matter.
Matter are classifying into Solid, Liquid and Gas. For this lesson let’s focus more on the solid
state of matter and describe the changes that materials undergo when they are bent, pressed,
hammered or cut.
Solid
One of the main states of matter
Has a definite size, shape mass and volume.
Have different characteristics/ properties such as shape, color, texture, weight etc.
Can be changed through many ways: by cutting, tearing, folding, twisting, bending,
stretching, pressing, coloring, crumpling, melting and others. Such actions may change
the materials size, shape, texture, color and other characteristics and properties.
Examples: Ball, Clock, Apple etc.
Changes in Solid Materials:
Question:
1. What changes happen to the paper bread
dough?
2. Is there new product formed after the dough
was pressed?
REMEMBER:
Question:
REMEMBER:
A hammer is a hand tool usually consists of a solid head held on the end of a handle. It is
used for beating, striking or pounding materials.
Solid materials can be hammered.
When hammered solid may change their size and shape and even the texture
No new material is formed, once the nails are hammered only their shape changed but it
is still the same nail.
Malleability- ability of material to be hammered into thin sheets
Question:
Solid materials can be cut. When cut this material may change their size and shape. But
no new material is form.
It does not change the material only its physical appearance is changed when cut.
Not all solid materials can be cut using a simple scissors. Just like in the clay sample,
some solid materials like iron, steel or harder solid etc. can be cut using specialized
cutting tools.
Conclusion:
The changes in solid materials as they are bent, pressed, hammered or cut only
affect their physical appearance. They change in size, shape and even texture
but their composition is still the same as the original.
ACTIVITY 1 – Before and After
What’s More
Direction: Compare the two sets of pictures in each number. Identify how these solid materials
undergo changes. Choose your answer from the box below and write it on the blank in third
column of the table.

Direction: Classify the materials listed on the scroll below in what way will be the best to change
the solid material. Write your answer in column B.
COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. Bent
2. Cut
3. Hammered
4. Pressed
Direction: Each picture shows changes in Solid Materials. Place a circle in each object and use
the following color to indicate which changes happen in the material.
Direction: Some things you can bend; some things you can cut hammered and pressed. Look
around you and observe.
Draw the things or even scenario in your place that you think you apply bend, cut, hammered
and press. Draw your answer in the box as labeled.

Paperclip Pendant

What I Can Do
Step 1: Materials & Tools
1. Large paperclips
2. Modge podge (glossy) or glaze (spray glaze may make things easier)
3. Long nose pliers
4. Wire cutter (optional)
Step 2: Let's Get Started
Take a Paperclip and straighten it.
Step 3: A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste
Employ your imagination and think of a design. Keep in mind the length of the paperclip. It may
be helpful to draw out your design so you may have a guide for your creation.
Step 4: Let's Do This
Start forming your design using your long nose pliers. Form your paperclip bit by bit so as not to
fatigue and break your paperclip.
Step 5: Finishing Up
Now you want to put a protective coating over your piece. You can use Modge Podge or glaze.
Note: Draw or take a picture of your final output in a short bond paper and attached it to this
module.
