1. Preface

2. Investigation Questions
1. Whether the dissolved concentration affects the potensial of plant water
tissue?
2. How to determine potential water potato cells?
3. Hipotesis
1. Water moves from a system containing water with a higher potential to a
system with a lower water potential. The greater the concentration of water
molecules in a system, the greater the potential of the water.
2. The weight of potatoes after soaking is smaller than before soaking because
water leaves the cells into the sucrose solution. This may be because the
water concentration in the sucrose solution is lower than the water
concentration in the potato cells
3. The weight of potatoes after soaking is greater than before soaking. This
may occur because the water concentration in the sucrose solution is higher
than the water concentration in the potato cells so that water will enter the
potato cells.
4. Procedure
1. Peel the potato’s rind using a knife.
2. Cut the potato as much as 6 pieces with the same weight that is 20 grams.
3. Weigh the initial weight of each potato slice.
4. Prepare 6 drink glasses labeled A, B, C, D, E and F along with their
respective molarities.
5. Filling each glass with 100 ml distilled water
6. Adding sugar in each glass except for glass A, with different masses.
a. Glass A is not added sugar
b. Glass B is added with 6.8 grams of sugar
c. Glass C is added with 13.7 grams of sugar
d. Glass D is added with 20.52 grams of granulated sugar
e. Glass E is added with 27.35 grams of sugar
f. Glass F is added with 34.2 grams of sugar
7. Dissolve sugar in distilled water by stirring it.
8. Put the potato slices in each glass.
9. Let stand for 30 minutes
10. Weigh the potatoes in each glass after leaving them for 30 minutes. Record
and measure the final weight of each potato.
5. Results and Discussion
A. Results
a. Table of observations of potatoes before and after 30 minutes
Sugar Solvent Initial Weight Final Weight Description
Glass A (0,0 M Solvent) 20 gram 22,0 gram Increase
Glass B (0,2 M Solvent) 20 gram 20,0 gram Constant
Glass C (0,4 M Solvent) 20 gram 19,5 gram Reduce
Glass D (0,6 M Solvent) 20 gram 19,0 gram Reduce
Glass E (0,8 M Solvent) 20 gram 18,5 gram Reduce
Glass F (1,0 M Solvent) 20 gram 18,0 gram Reduce
b. Graph of observations of potatoes before and after 30 minutes

c. Determine water potential

 For a sucrose solution with a concentration of 0.0 M, the water
potential (PA):
PA = P0 + PT
PA = 0 KPa + 0 KPa
PA = 0 Kpa
 For a sucrose solution with a concentration of 0.0 M, the water
potential (PA):
 For a sucrose solution with a concentration of 0.0 M, the water
potential (PA):
 For a sucrose solution with a concentration of 0.0 M, the water
potential (PA):
 For a sucrose solution with a concentration of 0.0 M, the water
potential (PA):
 For a sucrose solution with a concentration of 0.0 M, the water
potential (PA):

6. Conclusion
Therefore the water comes out of the potato cells.

ATTACHMENT
QUESTION
1. Describe the potential for water and explain how it affects osmosis.
2. Describe how you would determine potato molarity.
3. How will your result if the potatoes are placed in a dry area for several hours
before your experiment?
4. When the potatoes are on the ground, do the potatoes swell with water when it
rains? If not, how would you describe it, and if so, what is the advantage or
the disadvantage?
5. Do you think osmosis occurs when cells are in an isotonic solution? Explain your
reasons.
