About MIPS

The Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS) is a non-governmental, non-partisan
“think-and-do-tank” providing principal stakeholders with the insight needed to navigate
the opportunities and challenges of the ongoing peace and security transition in Myanmar.

Our primary areas of focus include:


▪ Federalism and Constitutional Reform
▪ Security Dialogue in the Peace Process
▪ Conflict Monitoring and Analysis, and
▪ Peacebuilding and Development

About Project

The project, Peace Dialogue and Youth Peace Ambassadors in University Campuses, is a
positive contribution to the country’s peacebuilding process through different approaches
and from different angles. It will not only broaden political perspectives of young people, but
also optimize students’ participation in the peace process as an expansion of civil society.
Additionally, the gap and hostility between young peacebuilders and negotiators will be
reduced, and students’ inputs will be considered in policy development, which will lead to
long-term sustainable results.

This project is –
▪ To enhance youth participation in the peace process in university campuses,
▪ To strengthen knowledge on the peace process among university youth,
▪ To promote social cohesion among university youth from diverse ethnic
backgrounds,
▪ To foster common values via youth-led dialogues, and
▪ To foster youth input to the peace negotiations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Executive Director and Senior Research Manager, the
Communication Officer is responsible to:

1. Prepare press releases, media advisories, fact sheets and other communication
products
2. Organize MIPS’s publication release events, forums, training, and press briefings
3. Prepare a communication strategy for MIPS in coordination with ED and
managers
4. Prepare/revise a communication and outreach plan to implement the
communication strategy
5. Translate excerpts from MIPS’s publication to post it on MIPS’s Facebook
6. Coordinate with a graphic designer to produce communication materials
7. Act as a bridge between the student peace ambassadors and MIPS
8. Develop and foster relationships with the students, authorities, and stakeholders
9. Create and maintain notes, files, records required to update the progress of the
project such as reports, case studies, and memos
10. Portray the organization in good light and enhance the visibility of MIPS
11. Analyze and strategize ways to get the audience to engage on social media and
website
12. Manage internal communications (Memos, newsletters etc…)

13. Organize initiatives and plan events or press conferences
14. Liaise with media and handle request for interviews, statements etc…
15. Foster relationships with advocates and key persons
16. Collaborate with marketing professionals to produce copy for advertisements or
articles
17. Perform “damage control” in cases of bad publicity
18. Facilitate the resolution of disputes with the public or external vendors
19. Assist in communication of strategies and organization’s standard operating
procedure (SOP) or message
20. Draft content (e.g. press releases) for mass media or organization’s website and
social media page as well
21. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree, with BSc/BA in public relations, Communications or relevant


academic background
• At least 5 years of relevant professional experience and a total of 7 years of working
experiences
• Excellent communication oral, written and presentation skills in both Myanmar and
English
• Ability to establish and nurture beneficial professional relationships with various
stakeholders carrying different views
• Self-motivation with a willingness to take initiative and solve complex problems
• Share the vision, goals, and objectives of MIPS
• Proven experience as communications specialist
• Experience in web design and content production is desirable

• Experience in copywriting and editing on all relevant webpage and social media is
essential
• Working knowledge of MS office is essential
• Skills in Photo and video-editing software and graphic design is are asset
• Outstanding knowledge of Organizational and planning abilities
• Understanding of and ability to apply cultural, gender, religion, race and conflict
sensitivity in MIPS’s daily operations
• Willingness to learn and improve proficiencies throughout the implementation
• Demonstrated ability to adhere to ethical standards and integrity
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and work well in a team
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively, with excellent time
management
• Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work at times against difficult
deadlines
• Attention to details is essential
• Proficiency in ethnic minority language(s) will be appreciated
