The person I interviewed is Roxana Cardiel. The topic I would like to expand on is
Broad-based Organizing. I chose to interview Roxana Cardiel, who is a leader with the
Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) Broad-based Organizer in Flagstaff and Northern Arizona.
Roxana organizes communities to be able to have a voice. She organizes and prepares
community leaders to be involved in community related issues which affect them directly.
Through this interview I wanted to share with the audience why broad-based organizing is so
important. I feel that this topic should be "out there" because community organizing is
instrumental in improving people's lives.
As a part of the industrial Areas Foundation Broad-based Organizer in Flagstaff and
Northern Arizona Roxana is an organizing member of the Northern Arizona Institutions for
Community Leadership (NAICL) which main purpose is to educate and inform as well as train
and build leadership “for civic participation across lines of race, class, age, religion, and organize
for issues that advance the common good (NAIC, homepage)”.
Under the umbrella of Industrial Areas Foundation Broad-based Organizing there are
several groups which collaborate all throughout the state and nation. The Industrial Areas
Foundation was created in 1940 it is considered the largest, longest standing network of local and
state faith and community-based organizations to promote support for community members
though leadership training development to be the voices in their communities to promote change.
“The IAF, which includes the West/ Southwest IAF and Metro IAF, currently works with
thousands of religious congregations, non-profits, civic organizations and unions, in more than
sixty-five cities across the United States and in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and
Germany” (IAF, 2020).
2. Have you ever been involved with any lawyers? Either getting sued or suing
Yes, I have been involved with the attorney in the way I work with the community for
immigration law for example oh I have severe issues with friends but I never have any issue
problems.
3. What was the first to start this work and that changed your life? Why?
The first it really hard to work with resident who are going to lose their home at the home park
also and we need to found the way to help them and also that was so hard for me we were
looking for the city council to approve the change with a juried the proposal was mean that is
important because that show me how important that is poor communities.
4. Did you ever feel that it was difficult to do your work for what people actually liked?
Or did you only make it if you are happy with it.
That is both for me that is required that means to me what I am doing is good for me to be
happy and make others happy but only is possible if the community also cares about it and we
would work together. Only when those things come together. Do I know what is good?
6. Do you remember the first goal you had? If so, what was it? And did you reach it?
At least I see my first goal oh ...Christ wow! I think that was to people to trusting me and I think
so to believe in me when I say I going to help you to be real to be honest and I be ready too I
think we're also known where things are come to do reach one time any anything also and be
able to trust each other to be there.
7. What would you say to a somebody on the street that asked you, “me and my
organization are trying to get our work out there, how could we do that, and why does
that work?”
So what kind of legalize we going to and that process that almost in the right place you find if we
work together you trust me and I trust you every going to come together if you take the place
and when you work for that together then you created relationship you created the people going
to trust and other understand and other will be part of this and other going to work with you and
you have to honored to that it for me be ready to take able to spaces with people could be with
you and by others and you need to be a very good listen. That is a quote? When you speak you
going to said something you already know but when you listen you going to learn something you
did know in that is exactly what you need to know it is amazing part you need to know

see his face out a voice in the table with emigrate community they think desert they take care
