but we want to know a lot of reservoir properties
• Some overlapping values of elastic properties on each or some
reservoir properties
• External factors which might not be counted

What Causes Reflections?

• Any interface between

Shot
bodies with different Receiver
acoustic properties
• Acoustic properties define
Impedance (I) , in which Layer 1

I = velocity * density Layer 2

Boundary

 Small change in impedance – small reflection

 Large change in impedance – large reflection

Seismic record displays wiggles of seismic wave through the earth, propagating
from the source to the receivers. For interpretation purposes, Society Exploration
of Geophysicist (SEG) specified the type of seismic polarity and phase.

Rock Velocity and Fluid
Gassmann’s Relations : What do the Equations Predict ?
30% porosity sandstone case

• Gas has the largest fluid effect.

• Importantly for gas, most of the reduction in

Vp occurs in the first 10% saturation.

• Density decreases with increasing

hydrocarbon saturation.

• Non intuitively Vs increases with increasing

hydrocarbon saturation. Gassmann’s
equations predict no change in shear modulus
so the increase is caused by the drop in
density.
