MAJOR PROJECT:
Infrastructure Upgrading & Remodelling

PART A: EXPANSION & REMODELLING OF CIVIL ENGINEERING INFRASTUCTURE

BUILDING USING SKETCH UP OR AUTOCAD - 20%
PART B: SCHEDULING THE TASK DETAILS USING MS PROJECT – 10 %
PART C: DOING A COST ESTIMATE USING EXCEL – 10%
PART D: WRITE UP A PROJECT PROPOSAL REPORT – 20%

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

This project has four tasks as stated above. It is based on all the topics that are covered in CE 202 which
includes AutoCAD, MS Project, Excel and MS Word which makes up 60% of your total mark for this subject.
The project tasks carry different sets of marks. All four tasks give a total of 100 marks. Guidelines are
provided to guide you in doing the task. Please ensure to read the guidelines carefully and do the task
accordingly.

PART A: DRAWING A BUILDING EXPANSION & LAYOUT PLAN USING SKETCHUP OR

AUTOCAD

Instruction

Draw an expansion plan and 3D model of the civil engineering building 30 Marks
remodelling that you selected in class. This shall be part of your
contribution to the department. Consult the respective coordinators for
their opinion in the design and expansion.

i. Initial sketch of the remodelling designed plan must be submitted in 5 marks

Google classroom Friday 16th August, 2019.

ii. 2D/3D drawing of the expansion plan must include dimensions and 20 marks
text.

iii. Insert a simple title block for your drawings 5 marks

PART B: SCHEDULING THE TASK DETAILS USING MS PROJECT

Instruction

Do a schedule for the tasks undertaken from the start to completion or 20 marks
submission of your project, using MS Project.

i. Have a good project title 3 marks

ii. The total duration of the building plan is clearly shown on the schedule 3 marks

iii. The project start date is 30th July 2019. 2 marks

iv. Calender will be the Normal calendar, meaning work is to be 3 marks
done on week days only.

v. Exceptions/Holidays (if any) 2 marks

vi. Normal working hours 8 hours a day 2 marks

vii. The work breakdown structure depends on your planning and 5 marks
tasks, and does not include construction;

PART C: DOING A COST ESTIMATE USING EXCEL

Instruction

Do a cost estimate for the materials only that were used for the 20 marks
building designed.

i. Design an appropriate title and heading for the estimate spread sheet. 3 marks

ii. A material take-off list 5 marks

iii. Find out cost of construction materials used in the design and create an 12 marks
excel spread sheet containing the entire material list and their unit
amount. The spread sheet must also indicate the total amount for the
materials.

PART D: WRITE UP A PROJECT POPOSAL INCORPORATING ALL NECESSARY

INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION.

Instruction

All the information regarding the project is to be included in the 30 marks

report.
The report will have the following format;
i. Margin 3
Margins for all documents will be as follows;
Left: 4cm
Right: 2cm
Top: 2cm
Bottom: 2cm

ii. Body 6

- Paragraph spacing – 0pt before and 12pt after

- Introduction (Your document must have an introduction)
- Body (Break up the body of your document to headings and
sub-headings)
-Conclusion
Appendix (includes drawings, schedule, cost, etc.)

Remember that this proposal is in line with the Civil Engineering Department’s Strategic Plan on
expansion and remodelling of its infrastructure buildings to cater for the new accreditation
program that is underway in line with the University’s Strategic Plan. Get more information
during your meeting and interviews with the respective coordinators for each assigned sections of
the buildings.
