and Correct Standard Units

What I Need to Know

In this lesson you will learn to:

1.Enumerate appropriate measuring tools in measuring distance ( SF5FE-IIIb-2 )

2.Conduct an activity in measuring distance using ruler and meter stick

3.Record data using correct standard units.

What’s In

2
What Is It
Let’s study!
Distance is an important factor in measuring motion. Distance is the measure of how
far or near two points are from one another .It can be measured using different ways such as
time, landmark or body parts. But it is inaccurate because there are factors that can affect the
movement in between.
There are appropriate tools and ways to measure distance so that you can tell whether
an object is far or near.

Appropriate Tools for Measuring Distance

In science, distance should always be exact, measured accurately and based on a standard
unit of measurement.
Scientifically, distance should be measured by using measuring tools such as the ruler,
meter stick, tape measure, measuring wheel, and ultrasonic distance measurer.

Tape Measure ruler meter stick

Measuring wheel

The Metric System of Measurement

The metric system is the world standard for measurement. It is used by scientists
throughout the world.
Having a standard unit of measure makes it easier for a scientist and other people to
understand each other’s data. Using different units of measurement may lead to
misunderstanding and confusion among people.
In the metric system, the standard unit of measure used for distance or length is meter.
You just add the prefix kilo when you are referring to distance is quite far. Prefix like deci,
centi, and milli are used if the length is quite short.

Let’s Check!

Direction: Match Column A with column B. Write the letter of your answer on the space
provided.

Column A Column B
______1. The measure of how far or near
two points are far from each other. a. standard unit
______2. The world standard system for
measurement. b. distance
______3. The standard unit of measurement
used for distance or length c. metric system
______4. Units used to measure if the
length is quite short. d. deci, centi, and milli
______5. Unit of measure used by scientist
and other people to
understand each other data. e. meter

Activity 2

Let’s do more!
Look for these things in your surroundings. Measure each item in centimetre. Record your
measurement in the box.

1. length of the table 6. height of alcohol bottle
2. length of the door 7. length of slipper
3. height of umbrella 8. length of a book
4. height of electric fan 9. width of a refrigerator
5.width of television 10. length of a cell phone

Assessment

I Can Do This!

Direction: Write T if the statement is true F, if it is false.

____ 1. The standard unit of measurement of distance or length in metric system is miles.
____ 2. Meter stick, tape measure and ruler are some of the standard tools in measuring
distance.
____ 3. The measure of how far or near two points are from one another is called distance.
____ 4. The English system of measurement is used by scientist throughout the world. ____
5. The metric system of measurement of distance is used only in the Philippines.

SUMMARY:

• Distance is the measure of how far or near two points are from one another.

• A standard unit of measure makes it easier for a scientist and other people to
understand each other’s data.

• Meter is the standard unit of measurement used in distance or length.

• Distance is measured by using tools such as meter stick, tape measure, measuring
wheel, and ultrasonic distance measure.

Key to Answers

What’s New

1. Set up A resulted in the shortest distance travelled by the marbles.

The number of books affects its distance travelled.
2. Set up C resulted in the longest distance travelled by the marble because there were three
books in set up C. Its height increases. The higher the reference point, the faster an object
moves and travels longer.
3. helps us in a way that we can know how things in motion differ. 4. The higher the
height, the longer the distance a marble travels
5. The speed of the marbles in Trial 1 and 2 increases.
