Lesson Description:
During the week students learned about the roles and responsibilities of a teacher and our
president. They also learned about the components of a letter. As a class we will go over what
we have learned about letters and its components in order to better prepare to write a letter to
the principal or the president. The letters will be to thank them for the work they do or to
communicate about something they believe should be addressed/changed. Teacher(s) will
demonstrate on the projector how to write a letter or show samples from previous day letters
(as allowed per student). Students should be able to identify some of the aspects of a letter
based on the previous lesson. Once we have completed the review students will begin to learn
about the envelope and how this needs to be addressed in order to mail it. Students will watch
a video that shows them how to mail a letter.
After, students will begin to work on their letter. Students have been given the choice to
write their letters to either the president or their principal. Students' letters should include 5-6
sentences. Both teachers will be walking around to ensure students are working and to assist as
they may need. Once students have finished writing their letters they will be given an envelope
and fill it out accordingly in order to be able to mail it (even if the letter is being sent to the
principal). Once students have completed writing out their envelope they will place their letters
inside and seal it. Students will then be given a stamp(s) to place accordingly. The teacher will
then give the student an exit ticket which will consist of a checklist of the things they should
have included in their letter and envelope.

Process and Steps:

1. The lesson will begin by reviewing the components of a letter as a class.
2. We will then tap into their prior knowledge by asking about what they remember that
makes up a letter: Can someone tell me what is one thing that a letter should have? (ei.
Date, heading, signature, etc…)
3. The teacher will ask who would like to volunteer their letter to be used as an example
for the class in order to review.
4. Once we have at least 2 letters from students the teacher will project the letter and
begin the review.
5. Next students will begin to learn about how to address an envelope in order for their
letters to be mailed.
6. Students will watch the following video on mailing letters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGOE-qxRVZw
7. After the video students will be able to discuss or ask questions that they may still have
regarding how to address the envelope or any other questions they may have.
8. Once finished the lesson on how to mail letters, students will begin writing their letters.
9. Once students have finished writing their letter they will then begin to fill out their
envelopes.
10. After students have completed their letters and filled out their envelope they will be
asked to very the information on the envelope to make sure the letter gets sent out to
the correct address,
11. Students who have completed both their letter and envelope, they will now add the
stamp(s).
12. Letters will be collected and students will receive an exit ticket.
