ACTIVITY NO. 1

Chapter One: The Selection of a Research Approach

Writing Exercise (Research Design, p. 22):

Take a topic that you would like to study, and using the four combinations of
worldviews, designs, and research methods in Figure 1.1, discuss a project that brings together a
worldview, designs, and methods. Identify whether this would be quantitative, qualitative, or
mixed methods research. Use the typical scenarios that I have advanced in this chapter as a
guide.

TOPIC TO STUDY:
Since I am in the field of the academe particularly in the Department of Education and

with the existing Pandemic brought by COVID-19, I am planning to focus my dissertation on the

personal and sociological aspect of preference for SHS of Grade 10 Junior High School

Learners of Davao City Special National High School.

PHILOSOPHICAL WORLDVIEW:
This study will touch the personal view of preference of each learner as influenced by

their peers and family regarding the reason of choosing a different Senior High School institution

rather than continuing their studies in Davao City Special National High School which also

offers a SHS program. This proposed topic will dig more on the narratives of each learner as they

unveil their personal reasons in choosing a SHS program provider. With this, the philosophical

worldview or paradigm suited to this study is the SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIVISM. This is

because the reality of each respondent will be collected and collated to determine their personal

views in choosing their senior high school. The goal of this study is to understand the

participants’ views according to their constructed personal reality on the topic under study.

RESEARCH METHOD AND DESIGN:

The research method that I will be using in this study is the QUALITATIVE METHOD

since I will be dealing purely with studies about human experience according to the preference of

each participants/respondents. Alternately, I will utilize the phenomenological approach of

gathering data to have an in-depth essence and understanding of an individual and how this

experience influences their behaviors and decisions in choosing other Senior High School

institution apart from Davao City Special NHS.
