Training Method
Before traffic survey work will be done, to ensure all traffic survey team
understand their duties and responsibility, a series of training will be conducted as
follows :
 Traffic count survey
 Travel Speed survey
 Spot Speed survey

This training also to ensure a good communication between surveyor team,

engineering team from contractor, and engineer. Training will be conducted 1
(one) time before survey time period between surveyor team, contractor, and
consultant (engineer).

2. Detail Training Materials

a) Traffic Count Survey :
1. Period of survey, will be implemented for 24 hours (6:00 to 6:00)
and a duration of 1 week at beginning, middle and ending point of
arterial construction section
2. The mode for traffic count is shown in below. Traffic volume will be
totaled according to each mode every hour, the modes ie :
1. Motorcycle
2. Passenger Car
3. Small Buses
4. Medium Buses
5. Large Buses
6. Pickup trucks
7. Small trucks(3ton to 4ton size)
8. Large truck(2 axles)
9. Large trucks(3axles or more)
10.Trailers

There three points of location of the surveys are :

a. At the beginning of construction section, there is no
intersection, just the ramp/transition of existing Toll road
b. At middle of construction section, there is intersection, should
be conducted traffic observation of each approach
c. At the end of construction section, there is no intersection.
Every point of location will be consider of 3 shift :
 Shift 1 (06:00-14:00)
 Shift 2 (14:00-22:00)
 Shift 3(22:00-06:00)

3. Location
There are three point `1 (beginning of artery), 2 (middle of artery),
3 (end of artery construction section)

b) Travel Speed Survey :

1. Period of survey, will be implemented for peak and non peak hours, as
follows :
07:00 to 09:00 (peak)
09:30 to 11.30 (non-peak)
13:30 to 15:30 (non-peak)
16:00 to 18:00 (peak)
The period of survey is 1 week (7 days), Monday to Sunday

2. Sample Size Requirements, is based on the specific need for the

information. The following suggested ranges of permitted errors in the
estimate of mean travel speed are related with the traffic operation,
trend analysis, and economic evaluations : ± 3.5 to ± 6.5 kph

3. Personnel and Equipment, travel speed survey can be performed by the

licence plate technique. There are involves a two person team, of
observer and recorder for each direction of travel at both the start and
the end of the study road.
Shift 1 :
07:00 to 09:00 (peak)
09:30 to 11.30 (non-peak)
Shift 2 :
13:30 to 15:30 (non-peak)
16:00 to 18:00 (peak)

Equipments :
 4 Stopwatches
 2 tents/shelters
 Recorders : Field form sheets, pens

4. Location :
Measurement will be done alongside of construction area of existing arterial
road

c) Spot Speed Survey :

1. Period of survey, will be implemented for peak and non peak hours,
as follows :
07:00 to 09:00 (peak)
09:30 to 11.30 (non-peak)
13:30 to 15:30 (non-peak)
16:00 to 18:00 (peak)

2. The modes that should be surveyed :
1.Motorcycle
2.Passenger Car
3.Small Buses
4.medium Buses
5.Large Buses
6.Pickup trucks
7.Small trucks(3ton to 4ton size)
8.Large truck(2 axles)
9.Large trucks(3axles or more)
10.Trailers

3. Personnel and Equipment, speed data can be collected by manual,

that the speed of an individual vehicle is determined by the time that
elapses for the vehicle to travel a measure course, it is from table 6-3.
The procedur requires a stopwatch, tape and pavement marking
Approaching to the construction area (Point 1) :
Equipments :
 4 Stopwatches
 Recorders : Field form sheets, pens
