OBJECTIVES
To determine the molarity and concentration of sodium thiosulphate sulphate solution by
titration with potassium permanganate.

INTRODUCTION
Redox reaction involves the transfer of electrons, and an acid-base reaction involves
the transfer of protons.Just an acid as be titrated against a base,we can titrate on oxidizing
agent against a reducing agent using a similar procedure. We can carefully add a solution
containing oxidizing agent to a solution containing a reducing agent..The endpoint is reached
when the reducing agent is completely oxidized by oxidizing agent. Two common oxidizing
agents are potassium dichromate and potassium permanganate.
Sodium thiosulphate is reducing agent. It is considered as an absolute standard, which
means if you weigh an amount, you know how exactly many moles of product you have, you
won’t lose an amount between weighing and making the solution and there is no indefinite
of impurities to disturb the measurement.

CHEMICALS
Sodium thiosulphate,0.025M standard KMNO 4 solution,2.0M sulphuric acid

APPARATUS
250ml volumetric flask,20ml pipette,10ml graduated cylinder,250ml conical flasks,50ml
beaker,burette.

METHOD
1. The burette is washed with tap water followed with distilled water and rinsed with 5-
10ml of KMN04 solution ,running the second rinsing through the burette tip. The burette
is clamped to retort stand.
2. The burette is filled with KMN04,making sure tip is completely filled and contains no air
bubbles. The initial burette reading is recorded to 2 decimal places.
3. 8g of thiosulphate is weighed accurately on a analytical balance bu using weighing
paper. The mass of sample Y is recorded.
4. The weighed sample is carefully transferredwith aid of a filter funnel to a 250ml
volumetric flask. The funnel is rinsed with distilled water into volumetric flask.Distilled
water is added until reach the calibration mask.
5. About 5ml solution of Y is poured into a small beaker.A pipette is washed with distilled
water and rinsed with solution Y.Pipette 20ml solution Y into conical flask.
6. 10ml of sulphuric acid is added into conical flask by using a graduated cylinder.
7. The solution is titrated with with standard KMNO 4 from burette until endpoint is
reached. The endpoint is indicated by permanent colour change from dark purple to
light pink. The final burette reading is recorded.
8. The titration process is repeated until two consecutive titrations achieved.
RESULTS AND CALCULATIONS
Number of titration Rough Titration Titration 1 Titration 2 Titration 3 Titration 4
Final burette reading(mL) 42.7 43.20 43.40 43.50 43.50

Initial burette reading(mL) 50.00 50.00 50.00 50.00 50.00

Volume of KMNO4 used(mL) 7.3 6.8 6.6 6.5 6.5

Mass of sample Y used = 8.0g

Volume of sample Y used = 20mL
Concentration of KMNO4 used=
Average value of KMNO4 = 6.74mL

Calculate the molarity(M) and concentration(g/L) of sodium thiosulphate.Use

relevant chemical equations to support your answer.

QUESTIONS
1. Why did the solution turns pink at the end?
Because it reaches it’s endpoint of titration. The sodium thiosulphate cannot oxidized with
potassium permanganate anymore. The endpoint is reached when the reducing agent is
completely oxidized by oxidizing agent.
DISCUSSION
Based on this experiment,it is necessary to determine the molarity and concentration of
sodium thiosulphate solution by titration with potassium permanganate.Titration is used to find
the concentration of sodium thiosulphate solution by reacting it with a known volume and
concentration of a potassium permanganate. Titrations are typically used for acid-base
reactions and redox reactions.Beaker is filled with sodium thiosulphate solution and
phenolphthalein as a color-change indicator.Phenolphthalein will show pink colour for basic
solution and colourless for acid solution . Potassium permanganate is dripped into the beaker
until the reaction is complete, causing a color change (the endpoint). Endpoint is when the
sample Y and potassium permanganate are reacted to the point where the number of acid
equivalents equals the number of base equivalents, the equivalence point is reached. The
equivalence point of a strong acid which is potassium permanganate will occur at pH 7. There are
some precautions that are need to be taken when do redox-titration experiment which is using
the suitable apparatus such as pipette and burette when transferring or measuring the volume of
the solution so that the result we get will be accurate.Next, making sure the volumetric flask is
clean and dry before used so that it won’t mix with substances before and can affect the result .
Next, measure the volume of the solution properly especially during make dilution solution. Make
sure the solution from the burette flow very slowly to avoid some mistake during take the
reading. Then, make sure there are no air bubbles in the burette by open the stopcock for a while
and let the solution flow a little bit.

CONCLUSION
Based on experiment,we manage to determine the unknown molarity and concentration of
sodium thiosulphate solution, the concentration we obtain is.
