(Text 1)
M: I have something stuck in my throat. It’s driving me crazy. Could you help me out?
W: Sure. Can you help me open the aid case?
(Text 2)
W: Do you want juice or tea?
M: Actually I don’t drink juice or tea. I prefer white coffee, I mean, coffee with milk.
(Text 3)
M: Quick. Channel Seven. Take it down: First, the ingredients ... sugar, two tomatoes … half a
spoon of salt…
W: Sorry. She is speaking too fast. I can’t keep up.
(Text 4)
W: Excuse me. Do you have a fitting room here?
M: Of course we do. It’s on the right-hand side behind that counter.
W: Can I bring more than one dress to try on at a time?
M: Sure.
(Text 5)
M: What’s the matter?
W: I don’t have any change for the bus. Could you lend me some?
M: I seldom carry coins. Why not apply for a bus pass? It’s cheaper and more convenient.
W: I think I will. Thank you.
(Text 6)
W: Hi. Good morning. Who are you waiting for?
M: Oh, hi. My son is taking a test to enter the engineering department.
W: So is my daughter.
M: Did she take the test for the medical school?
W: She did, but she didn’t get through. If she had gotten two more points, she could have been a
medical student. She got 78 points.
M: My son got only 75. If our kids had worked harder at school, they wouldn’t be in trouble.
W: I suppose so. Well, let’s hope for the best.
(Text 7)
W: Hello, Alfred! Good morning, be seated.
M: Thank you, ma’am.
W: Alfred, please tell me something about your present studies.
M: I am studying for a master’s degree in physics at Presidency College. I was rather a success at
school.
W: How about your parents?
M: My father works on a farm and my mother works in a school.
W: OK, Alfred. What can you tell me about your goals in life?
M: My goals! I want to become a scientist at the Indiana Institute of Science.
W: Well, how much financial help do you expect from our charity?
M: I’d be grateful to you, ma’am, if you could cover my fees.
W: Oh, I see. Well, we’ll try to help you.
(Text 8)
M: Hello. I’d like to visit Vancouver on the 12th of September.
W: Do you need a hotel, too?
M: Yes. I’d like a single room and a double room since my wife and son will also come with me.
W: OK. How long would you like to stay?
M: I would like to stay for three days. By the way, we would like to go boating on the lake in the
forest there. Could you help arrange that?
W: Certainly. Which would you prefer, a rowing boat, a battery-powered one or a gas-powered one?
M: How much do they cost?
W: A rowing boat holds two and costs 1 dollar an hour but you can rent the other two kinds for
100 dollars a day.
M: How many people do they hold?
W: At most five.
M: I’d prefer an electric one for two days.
W: That’s fine. We’ll arrange your hotel room and the boat.
(Text 9)
W: Hello. The front desk told me to ask you for sightseeing advice. Am I right?
M: Of course. I’d be more than happy to help. I am, after all, the hotel’s CEAP.
W: The hotel’s CEAP? What exactly is that?
M: We advise you on where to visit, what to eat, or how to shop during your stay here in New York.
W: Great! So where should I start my sightseeing?
M: The Statue of Liberty is always a good place to begin.
W: Well, I saw the Statue of Liberty on my last visit here. Can you recommend somewhere else?
M: Hmm. What type of interests do you have?
W: In my spare time, I really like to view art and go for walks.
M: Aha! Have you been to Central Park or the Museum of Modern Art?
W: No, but I’ve heard a lot about both.
M: Well, Central Park is wonderful for taking walks. Afterwards, you should head to the museum
to enjoy the art.
W: Great! That sounds like a plan. Thanks.
(Text 10)
In February of 2005, three former colleagues from PayPal started a website called YouTube.
Chad Harley, Steven Chen and Jawed Kim started their company in a garage. All three had
graduated from college. Chad studied at a university in Pennsylvania and Steven and Jawed
studied computer science together at a university in Illinois. YouTube quickly became one of the
most popular websites in the world.
Because of its popularity, the three men were able to move their company to a small building
and later to a bigger building in California. With this move, they had started another famous
Silicon Valley Internet company. Internet users can use YouTube with no charge. YouTube gains
profit only through companies who pay to advertise on the website that reaches millions of viewers.
In general, the website allows users to view videos from the movie, television, or music industries
or original videos uploaded by other users. After only one year and eight months, in November
2006, the three owners announced they were selling YouTube to Google.

M: Thanks, Tammy.
(Text 6)
W: Good morning, sir. Are you ready to order now?
M: Yes. I’ll have some salad, roast beef, and a baked potato.
W: How do you want the beef? Rare, medium, or well-done?
M: Well-done. And easy on the salt, please.
W: I beg your pardon?

M: ... and then?
W: Little Johnny has a basketball game this afternoon. I’m driving him to the game.
M: Oh, how is his team doing?
W: They’re doing very well. Last week they won the town’s competition. And next week, they’re
travelling to Toronto for a tournament.
M: That’s impressive.
W: Well, what are you doing today?
M: I’m not doing much. I’m meeting with some friends for lunch, but, other than that, I don’t have
much to do today. Why not bring Johnny and Mike here tonight? I can treat you to dinner. We

M: Yes. Sorry we’re a few minutes late.
W: That’s no problem. It’s always very busy at check-out time anyway.
M: Oh, really? The last hotel we stayed at charged us for a late check-out.
W: The hotel isn’t full this week, so it’s not a problem. How was everything?
M: The room was great. The beds were really comfortable, and we were surprised to have our own
fridge. The kids were disappointed that the pool wasn’t open this morning, though.
W: I apologize for that. We can’t get a cleaner in any earlier than 10 am.
M: Well, we had a nice swim last night anyhow.
W: Will you be putting this on your credit card?
M: No. I’ll pay cash.
W: OK. So the total comes to 781 RMB, including tax.

(Text 10)
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929. As a young boy,
he loved books and was a good speaker. After graduating from college in 1948, King trained to be a
minister like his father. During that time, he learned about Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian leader,
and his belief in nonviolent protest.
Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott were married in 1954 and had four children.
In 1955, King became the minister of a church in Alabama. He met another minister there and
worked together to help black people. Some people didn’t like what King and his followers were
doing. In 1957 someone bombed his house and his church. He was put in prison many times for
protesting about how black people were treated.
King was famous for the speeches he gave to persuade people that things must change. He
inspired white and black people to fight for the fair treatment of blacks. In 1963 King gave his
famous speech — I have a dream — to thousands of people in Washington DC.
King led many marches in the 1960s. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He also wrote two
books about black people’s struggle for the same rights as white people. King was shot and killed
on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.
