(Text 1)
W: Have you got any plans for the summer vacation?
M: I don’t mind where we go as long as there is sun, sea and beach.
(Text 2)
W: I can hardly wait to see the tigers and pandas. How soon will we arrive there, sir?
M: Be patient. It won’t be long before the bus gets there.
(Text 3)
M: Listen, Mom, Tom is calling me from outside the window. May I go and play with him?
W: No. You can’t go out until your homework is done.
(Text 4)
M: Where is Miss King’s report, Mrs. Black?
W: I brought it to you when you were at Mr. White’s office yesterday.
M: But I can’t find it now.
W: Oh, here it is, on the floor. The windows must not have been closed yesterday.
(Text 5)
W: Wow, what a beauty! Is she your new girlfriend, Steve?
M: No. She is William’s girlfriend.
W: Then why do you have her photo?
M: William wants me to meet her at the airport this afternoon because he’ll be at a meeting then.
(Text 6)
W: Have you ever been in an earthquake?
M: Yes, I experienced one when I was in Tokyo once. The shaking only lasted a few seconds,
though, and then it was over.
W: Do you know how strong the earthquake was?
M: I don’t remember, but it wasn’t very serious. Have you ever been in an earthquake?
W: No. But when I was young, we had a class every week teaching us how to survive an
earthquake.
M: Where are you from?
W: Washington. But I was born in Los Angeles and brought up there.
M: No wonder! One of the biggest earthquakes happened there, causing many deaths.
(Text 7)
W: I am so excited about our girls’ night out!
M:  I know you love hanging out with just the girls. Talking, chatting, having some cocktails, going
to the club … that is amazingly fun.
W:  Cocktails! Oh my goodness! I forgot my ID. I can’t get into the club without my ID. I can’t order
drinks without it. What am I going to do?
M: Calm down. Tell me the last place you remember seeing it.
W: I think I left it on the desk in my bedroom.
M: So I will have to go back. Just go meet your friends and I will call you when I get it.
W: Honey, you’re really kind! Thank you very much.
M: You’re welcome.
(Text 8)
M: Ugh, I am so hot. I just cannot cool off.
W: Really? I feel like it’s finally warm enough for me. I love the heat.
M: I hate the feeling of my clothes sticking to me the most. It’s disgusting.
W: Yeah, but there are so many ways to cool off. I mean, we could get ice cream. We can go for a
swim. Or, we can just sit in the shade and drink iced tea. Summer days are the best.
M: Well, I agree that those are great ways to beat the heat, but I prefer cold weather because you
can always put on more layers to warm up.
W: That’s true, but I hate all those loose, uncomfortable sweaters I have to put on when it’s cold. It
makes me feel ugly.
M: Ha-ha. I think you’ve just admitted the real reason women like summer.
W: So what? Women can wear prettier clothes in the summer. I would rather just put on a
sundress and drink a lot of water. What’s the big deal? Hey, there’s an ice cream truck. Want
some?
M: OK.
(Text 9)
M: Good morning, ma’am. I am Fred King from The Times in Manchester. Can I ask you a few
questions?
W: Sure. Go ahead.
M: Where are you from?
W: I am from Wales. I travelled all night to join this global warming gathering in London.
M: Do you think there’s anything we can do to reverse the damage that’s been done already?
W: It might not be possible to fix the problems that we’ve created for ourselves, but there are a lot
of things we can do to prevent more damage from happening.
M: Like what?
W: Well, we can use public transportation instead of taking our cars, for a start.
M: What else can we do to protect the environment?
W: Your home should use sources of renewable energy.
M: How about recycling? Does that actually help?
W: Yes. You should take your glass, paper, plastic, and cans to a recycling center.
M: What do you think is the biggest worry for our future: the lack of energy or pollution? Or do you
think it might be something else?
W: In my opinion, the greatest concern is having enough clean water for everyone.
(Text 10)
New Orleans often has been called the most unique city. It is famous for its foods, its
architecture, its celebrations and its music. It is famous as the birthplace of jazz. For years, it has
been a popular destination for tourists from around the world.
New Orleans was named after Philippe II, the Duke of Orleans. Because the city was on the
Mississippi River, it became an important port for shipping and played a large role in slave trade.
By 1840, with more than 100,000 people, New Orleans was one of the largest cities in the world.
By the early 1900s, New Orleans had become an exciting place. Its nickname “the big easy”
was thought to have come from musicians who said how easy it was to find work. Others said it
meant the city was more carefree than New York City, which was nicknamed “the big apple”.
In August 2005, Hurricane Catherine caused the worst natural disaster in American history.
80% of New Orleans was flooded, and more than 1,500 people were killed. Before Catherine
destroyed so much of the city, 485,000 people lived in New Orleans, but in June 2006, the
population was less than 230,000. Workers still continue to clean up and rebuild the city today.

was no hot water.
(Text 3)

W: Well, it’s always crowded here during rush hour so I am trying a different route from work
today, and I will be home soon.
(Text 4)
M: It’s a lovely day out today, isn’t it?
W: Yes. But it’s supposed to get cold tomorrow.

(Text 6)
M: Do you still remember your childhood?
W: I can’t remember all of it but the most interesting parts never fade from memory.
M: So ... what was your happiest moment?
W: Actually, some of my fondest memories of my childhood were spending time with my family in
the basement waiting for the tornados to pass. What about your childhood?
M: I was born in the Lake District. We had so much fun when I was young. We played on the water
every day, boating on the rivers, catching little frogs.
W: Sounds really interesting. No wonder you are so good at swimming.
(Text 7)
M: Do you need all those books?
W: Yes, Dad! The yellow book is a Spanish-English dictionary and the red one is a tourist guide to
London.
M: But do you need that big, black book?
W: Yes, of course, Dad! The black book’s very important. It’s about children. My English family has
two young children and I’m going to take care of them.
M: But it’s about Spanish children! British children are different! Um … I mean, I hope it can help
you with your job.
W: Dad, don’t worry about me. If I have any problems, I will call you for advice.
M: All right. Well, enjoy your stay in London.
(Text 8)
W: Country Roses Bed and Breakfast, can I help you?
M: Yes, I am thinking of coming for a visit to the countryside in the next few weeks. What’s the
best way to get there from the city?
W: Take bus 35 from Apple Street, and then get off at Park Street, Exit No. 16. The house is the
third one on the right with a blue and pink sign.
M: Are there any restaurants nearby?
W: There are a few. There’s a nice little place in the village that serves traditional food and two that
serve Japanese foods.
M: OK, that sounds great. Do you have two rooms with twin beds for the weekend of Saturday the
12th?
W: Um, let me check. Yes, we have two rooms available.
M: Great.
W: What’s your name, please?
M: Thomas Sanders.
W: All right, Mr. Sanders, we’ll see you in two weeks.
(Text 9)
W: Tomorrow is Friday. Do you have any plans for tomorrow night?
M: Not really. I was thinking of maybe going to a movie. Do you want to go with me?
W: Sure. What movie were you thinking about going to?
M: Have you heard of Hot Fuzz? It’s an action comedy. What do you think?
W: To be honest, I like movies with a happy ending best. I don’t like movies that make me cry.
M: Well, what do you have in mind?
W: I was thinking of seeing You, Me and Dupree. It’s a typical Hollywood movie.
M: I hear that movie is just for women. Do you like Becoming Jane, the one based on a true story
about Jane Austen?
W: The famous English writer? That sounds fantastic! I have read some of her novels so it will be
good to learn more about her. What are the show times?
M: It starts at 8:00 pm at the Capital Theater. If we book the tickets online ahead of time, we can
save a lot.
W: Great. Why don’t I meet you there around 7:45 tomorrow night?
M: Sounds good. I’ll see you then!
(Text 10)
It was a dark and stormy night. My parents went out to a formal dance. I was about to go to
bed when I heard a tapping sound on my window.
“Who is there?” I shouted. Suddenly there was a flash of lightening and I saw a face looking
like an alien at the window. I felt so scared that I ran to my bed immediately and pulled the
blanket over my head. Then I heard footsteps. I trembled. It was dark but I knew the way to my
drawer, where my camera was kept. I ran there and took out my camera and took pictures in the
direction of the window, hoping to later show my father what I had seen. Soon the sound of
footsteps died out.
At this very moment, the grandfather clock struck 12.
I woke up after 8 the next morning and decided to look into the whole thing. I got my film
developed only to find that they were black and I could see nothing. Then I remember I hadn’t used
the flash.
When I went back, I told my father the whole incident. He started to laugh, telling me that he
was dressed up as an alien for the party last night and had passed my window at midnight to get
into the house, since it was raining so heavily.
