Book 7 Unit 1
(Text 1)
M: Bill is really amazing. Did you hear that he nearly lost his life yesterday in the river? He was
rescuing a child from the icy water.
W: From what I’ve heard, that was not the first time he was in such a dangerous situation.
(Text 2)
M: OK, now, do you want to attend all three days? The conference runs from Wednesday to Friday.
W: Er …, I think I can come on the first day but I can’t on Thursday. Friday is all right, though. By
the way, what does it cost?
(Text 3)
M: Lucy, how about going back now?
W: How about ten more minutes? I want to take some photos over there.
M: But look at the clouds. I’m afraid we’ll get wet if we stay here.
(Text 4)
M: I heard you want to move. Why?
W: This apartment is too noisy and too dark. I really want to find something better.
M: So have you found anything?
W: Lisa was looking for a roommate for her sister. I think I’ll be able to share her apartment.
(Text 5)
M: How will I recognize your house when I call for you, Sue?
W: Well, it’s the same as all the others on the street, but look out for a big tree. It’s by the front gate
and it’s covered in lovely flowers at the moment.
(Text 6)
W: Hello. This is the emergency 911 operator.
M: Hello? Help! I need help!
W: Yes, sir, please calm down and explain exactly what is happening.
M: My car broke down on the freeway. I have a lady passenger, and she’s about to give birth.
W: OK, sir. Can you tell me exactly where you are?
M: I’m ... I’m in the southbound lane of the Lincoln Expressway, about 15 miles from the Washington
Tunnel, and this lady isn’t going to wait.
W: I’ve just sent an ambulance to your location. They should be there any second.
(Text 7)
M: What a surprise to run into you here, Linda! What are you doing here?
W: I’m looking for a notebook.
M: Don’t you have one?
W: I did, but I dropped it on the ground last week and it broke.

M: Why not have it fixed?

W: Well, I’ve been using it for over four years. I really want to get a new one now.
M: There are a lot of different kinds of notebook computers. Do you want me to go with you and have
a look?
W: That would be very kind of you. To be frank, I don’t know much about notebooks, but I hear
you’re an expert. I’d really appreciate your help.
(Text 8)
W: Hi, Mark. This is Susan. I think I caught the flu or something. I feel worse than yesterday. I
cannot stop coughing and I think I have a fever. I’m afraid I cannot come to the office today.
M: I’m so sorry to hear that. Have you seen a doctor?
W: Not yet. I took some pills last night and this morning, but it doesn’t seem to be any better.
M: It sounds very serious. Do you have anyone to take you to the hospital? You might need to see a
doctor.
W: No. All my friends are at work right now.
M: I’ll come over and pick you up.
W: Don’t you have a meeting to attend this morning?
M: Don’t worry. It won’t begin until 11:00, one and a half hours from now. I won’t miss it.
W: Thanks, Mark.
(Text 9)
People called Wilma Rudolph “the fastest woman in the world”. In 1960, she became the first
American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She won the 100-meter dash, the 200-
meter dash, and ran a part of the 400-meter relay team. She was an extraordinary American athlete.
In today’s program, I’d like to tell you about her childhood.
Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was born too early and
weighed only two kilograms. She had many illnesses when she was very young. She also had a more
serious disease, which damaged her left leg. When she was six years old, she had to use a special
device because she could not use that leg.
Wilma Rudolph was born into a very large, poor, African-American family. She was the twentieth
of twenty-two children. Since she was sick, most of the time her brothers and sisters all helped to
take care of her. Every week, Wilma’s mother drove her to a special doctor eighty kilometers away.
There, she got physical treatments to help heal her leg.
Soon, her family’s attention and care showed results. By the time she was nine years old, she no
longer needed her device. Wilma was very happy, because she could now run and play like other
children.

M: All right, if you need any help, just let me know. My name is Tom.
W: Sure. I’ll let you know if I need anything. Hum, this bed feels very firm. My son will probably like
it.
M: So you like it?
W: Yes, this bed is very good. It’s pretty firm.
M: Well, you’re right. This is a very good brand. It doesn’t get soft easily. And we offer a lifetime
guarantee, so you don’t have to worry about its quality. We can give you a fifteen percent
discount. We also offer a very good financing plan. There’s no payment, no interest until next
October.
W: That’s an attractive plan. I’ll think about it.
M: Well, you’ve got to hurry. This bed sells pretty well and this activity ends tomorrow.
