Learning Objectives

• Discuss the definition of Research.

• Explain the Purpose of research.

• Promote Research in our society to discover new knowledge and understanding of the
unknown to establish facts and principles.

Definition of Research

• Research

- Studios inquiry or examination; especially; investigation or experimentation aimed at the


discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new
facts, or practical application of such new or revise or laws.

- Research is something that people undertake in order to find out things in systematic way,
thereby increasing their knowledge.

- Research = Solve problems that have no known solution by anyone in the world

- Research ≠ learning from books, papers, news, reports, professors…. Anything that can be
learned, by definition is not research

- “Searching online” is not research

Why to do research ?

• Understand the world

• Solve new problems

• Improve existing solutions

Difference of Research and Thesis

Research

- Systematic inquiry

- Entails collection of data

- Documentation of critical information

- Analysis and interpretation of data

- In accordance with suitable methodologies

Thesis

- Product/output of students

- a research report written in academic manner

- substantive and organize flow of arguments

- it should have correct grammar, punctuation and spelling

- the line of arguments in a thesis is supported by evidence acquired through research

Purpose of Research

 To discover new facts about known phenomena


 To find answers to problems which are partially solved by existing methods and
information.
 Improve existing techniques and develop new instruments or products.
 To order related, valid generalization into systematized science –Schlotfeldt
 To provide basis for decision making in business, industry, education, government and in
other undertakings. -Gore and Dyson, p.65
 To satisfy the researcher’s curiosity
 To acquire a better and deeper understanding about one phenomena that can be known
and understood better by research
 To verify or expand existing knowledge
 To promote health and prolong life
 To provide man with more and better of his basic needs
