resistance tactics have been a part of many successful movements for social change.
CHQ: Were John Brown’s actions justified?
(C) Lesson Objective Students will be able to discuss and formulate their own early answer to the question “is
violent resistance justified” based on the accounts of the lives of John Brown and Mary Ellen
Pleasant. They will return to grapple with this question during our Civil War unit.

school’s expectations) ● Watch a video on John Brown. Before viewing, ask students what they know about him
already. After viewing, ask them to identify what he’s known for (Harpers Ferry) and ask
if they agree with his tactics.
● Introduce Mary Ellen Pleasant, the Black abolitionist who funded John Brown.
● Have students read NYT article about her and summarize her life in a 1-2 paragraph
autobiography for homework.
