TAKE HOME TASK WEEK 11

TAKE HOME TASK WEEK 11

This is a weekly activity for you to carry out individually.

The activities should be completed before the next class.

1. Read on the use of the following aspects in developing appropriate sentence structure in
academic writing:
a. Tenses
In general, when writing most essays, one should use present tense, using past
tense if referring to events of the past or an author’s ideas in an historical context.

b. Subject verb agreement

Agreement in speech and in writing refers to the proper grammatical match between
words and phrases. Parts of sentences must agree, or correspond with other parts,
in number, person, case, and gender.

c. Type of sentences
i. Simple sentence
A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb, and it may also have an object and
modifiers. However, it contains only one independent clause.

ii. Compound sentence

A compound sentence contains at least two independent clauses.  These two independent
clauses can be combined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction or with a semicolon.

iii. Complex sentence

A complex sentence contains at least one  independent clause and at least one dependent
clause. Dependent clauses can refer to the subject (who, which) the sequence/time (since,
while), or the causal elements (because, if) of the independent clause.
