Step-By-Step Procedures:
i. Pass out 10-15 gingerbread manipulative counters per student.
ii. Pass out addition and subtraction sheets and paper towels.
iii. Hand out number problem work sheets.
iv. Have students grab their Red or Blue dry erase marker and a
pencil.
v. Since students are learning to add numbers 0-9 have students
place manipulatives in sequences that in the end do not add up to
more than 10 but can subtract to equal any number. (e.g.,1+6, 5+5,
7+3, 9-4, 8-2, 6-6)
vi. Give students just an answer between 1-10 and have them figure
out what numbers are needed to be added or subtracted to get to
the answer.
vii. Have students use their white board marker to write the answers on
their laminated circle page as you walk around the classroom
looking at the answers students received.
viii. When giving just answers be sure to watch for students who are
struggling to find the correct word problem needed to get to the
answer and then explain the answer by writing it on the whiteboard.
ix. Have students work independently on their worksheets while
solving math problems using their gingerbread manipulatives.
Plan for Independent Practice: Each number problem work sheet will have random addition
and subtraction problems. After we do our group work on the project white board for all
students to see, students will turn to their problem sheets and work on them independently and
write their answers on the page with their name at the top.
Assessment Based on Objectives: I will watch students as we do the group activity and
explanation. If I notice students struggling, I will pull them aside during the independent work
time and have them working in a group with me on their worksheets, so they have extra help.
Grades will be distributed based on how well they do their independent work and how much they
participate in the group activity.
Possible Connections to Other Subjects: This is a math specific lesson.
