OBJECTIVES

 Observe the basic types of tissues and their features.

 Describe the types, characteristics, locations, and functions of epithelial, connective, muscular
and nervous tissues.

OVERVIEW

This module present the  various tissues in the body, their characteristics, location and its clinical
significance.

The systematic and  microscopic study of tissues that compose the body organs is known as histology.  A
tissue is define as an aggregation of similar cells that perform a specific set of functions. There are four
basic types of tissue in our body classified as epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue and
nervous tissue.

Do you know  the origins of cells and tissues in the body?  Well, all of it are derive from three germ
layers in the embryo such as  the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.

As you can see in the picture below, zygote undergoes series of cell divisions and development process
that includes the formation of the germinal layers.   Cells in each germ layer differentiate into tissues
and embryonic organs. The ectoderm, the outer layer gives rise to the nervous system and the
epidermis, among other tissues. The mesoderm, which is the middle layer  gives rise to the muscle cells
and connective tissue in the body. The endoderm, which is the inner layer gives rise to the gut/digestive
tract and many internal organs.

MATERIALS

 Videos demonstrating the appearance of the tissues:

 Microslides of simple squamous, stratified squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar,

pseudostratified ciliated, transitional

 Microslides of dense regular, dense irregular, areolar, adipose, cartilages, compact bone, spongy
bone, blood smear

 Microslides of skeletal, cardiac, smooth, and spinal cord smear

PROCEDURES

 Practice classifying tissues through demonstration videos using photomicrograph/ micrograph of

different tissues.

 Observe representative connective tissue types in prepared/virtual specimens;

 Observe and recognize types of  muscle and nerve tissues.
