applicable for power line inspections. In this paper, we introduce a multi-platform
UAV system and multi-model communication system to cope with highly efficient
power-line-inspection tasks in China. The different UAVs cooperatively function as
long-distance imaging, short distance imaging and communication relay. The high
quality image/video is transmitted in realtime to the on-site control station for UAV
navigation and far end office for analysis. Our study proves that the cooperative
inspection for multi-UAVs can achieve a much higher efficiency than traditional
inspection methods.

The efficiency of power line inspection is one of the most tremendous problem in the power industry. In
the past, inspection activities relating to the transmission line have hugely relied on human labor power
which is demonstrated as insubstantial and ineffective. In recent years, with the development of advanced
technology, especially on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), there are many enterprises in power industry
using different types of aircraft for power line inspection in China. Despite being proved as an effective
way to cope with line inspection in tough areas and can partially replace human labor, these applications
of UAV are facing many challenges and difficulties. The purpose of this study is to provide a cooperative
power line inspection solution using multi-platform UAVs, with integrated communication and control
systems. The feasibility of the paradigm is demonstrated as achieving the optimal transmission quality
thereby improving the inspection efficiency.

This paper introduces the technology of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for
power line inspection. In China, this technology today is used more than in the
past, and be developed more and more with many applications. However, there
are still some difficulties that China has have to face when trying to apply this
new technology. The system configuration is presented in this paper by
introducing many features of four advanced configurations of UAVs (Fixed
Wing UAV, HexRotor UAV, Tethered Multi-rotor UAV and Cooperative
Operation of UAVs ). Besides, the authors also discuss the three types of
communication design of UAVs, including UAV Datalink, Communication
Relay and Satellite Communication. Finally, an evaluation of a 500 kV
transmission line is studied to find the effect of UAV technology on the

communication modalities. A fixed wing UAV, HexRotor UAV and Tethered Multi-rotor UAV are
respectively introduced as the types of UAV to provide the solution for the hardship of UAV application.
UAV datalink, communication relay and satellite communication are 3 types of communication design
that are helpful for the information transmitting regarding inspection objects with in a realtime, stable and
high-quality way. This paper also indicates that the UAV can indeed develop the inspection especially in
emergent inspection during the natural disasters, though it may not fully replace those other traditional
methods.

Inspecting Checking transmission power line regularly is really important in power industry. By

needed to do the task and is more effective. However, its application is still limited. Due to the
restrictions of UAV in types, control system which remain unsolved and communication, the
thing is going to discuss about, has been solved. The problems in communication starts with the
crews who having to return to office from remote areas before giving the data to specialists. It
wastes much time so many hours and may causes some problems if it’s it is not fixed as soon as
possible. Therefore, a separate UAV is used only for receiving data from other UAVs and
sending it to Ground Station. This new method does a great success and the cooperation has
reduced lot of an enormous of time. A further improvement is confirmed so that it can be

modality, the communication and control system, the gap time between the on-site
picture/video acquirement and afterwards analysis. Fixed Wing UAV has long
patrol distance; HexRotor UAV can be identified and located; Tetherred Multi-
rotor UAV can hover in the air for infinite time. The details of the communication
systems are UAV Datalink, Communication Relay, Satellite Communication. The
performance evaluation by the inspection paradigm in a practical 500 kV

long time while times of crisis demand immediate results. Therefore, a viable solution is
proposed: Unmanned Aerial drone Vehicles (UAV). By using UAV, costs are greatly reduced
and effectiveness is tremendously increased for they can reach areas that are impossible to tread
on. The practice of using UAV in engineering is quickly becoming popular and the price is more
and more affordable. But one problem arises: not all UAVs are the same, so inspection results
captured (?) obtained may vary. Thus, we asked if there is a way to utilize available UAVs to
their full potential. In this paper we proposed a solution by using a cooperative model combining
different kinds of UAV. Our experience shows that using the cooperative method in UAV

system used to inspect the power line in China. Depending on strengths and weaknesses of each UAV

3. Abstract:
The technology of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has become more affordable and practicable
for power line inspections. In this paper, we propose a new cooperative operation workflow for
power line inspection by multiple UAV platforms and multiple communication modalities. In the
overall deployment of the UAV systems, three types of UAVs are used, serving as the function
for long-distance sketchy inspection, short-distance closer inspection and communication relay.
The goal of UAV inspection system is to transmit images or videos of inspection objects in a
realtime, reliable and high quality way. To achieve this goal, the last stage of communication is
to transmit the realtime videos/pictures to the far-end back operation center or office for analysis.
Our practical experience shows that by this cooperative operation the time taken for inspection
can be greatly reduced and the efficiency can be improved tremendously.

However, there are still challenges about applicable UAV modes, ineffective
commanding and interacting system, and final picture processing that need to be
tackled. By using various models like : Fixed wing UAV “ to obtain overall
condition”, hexrotor UAV “ for futher detail inspection”, tethered multi-motor “
for communication replay” , the terrain is thoroughly covered.
The second problem is easily solved by combining UAV Datalink, communication
Relay and Satellite Communication that “ making the module substitutable in a fast
and easy way”. Finally, apply the following technology to Sichuan Province line,
time is greatly reduced but still the UAV can not replace the traditional method.
In conclusion, UAV is a new and prospective method but still need more
improvement in the future.

The unmanned aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology is being
increasingly applied to inspect power line especially by
those from power industry due to its whole host of
advantages. However, the current applications of UAV in
China are still in a provisional stage and facing many
initial instabilities which prevent them from being served
on a regular basis. There are three challenges must be
solved. The first is the application modality. Secondly, the
correspondence of communication and control system for
UAV is not efficient enough to be compatible with the
power line inspection. Lastly, the interval between the
aircraft landing time and the analysis may be too long to
ensure that the progress power line inspection task
transpires properly. This paper will provide some solution
to those challenges and also propose an alternative design
for both communication system to control UAV and the
transmission of picture or video in an optimized path.
Additionally, the following context will compare our new
work process to the traditional one.

In this day and age, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has become a tool for engineers to use in
power line inspections. However, this type of inspection is incomplete and come with many problems of
its own. This paper will propose a cooperative work flow using multiple UAV platforms and multiple
communication systems. Fixed Wing UAV is used for long ranged inspection, which will notify any
defects to the engineers. Hex Rotor UAV will then be sent to take detailed images or video of the defect
spot. For effective communication, a UAV called Tethered Multi-rotor UAV is used to relay information.
The images are realized in real time to precisely control the drone and also used for analysis. Our research
shows that using this cooperative operation proved to be less time consuming and more practical than the
traditional method.

mountain ridge as shown in Fig. 7 . Finally, a new model of power line

ABSTRACT:
In this technology era, the UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) outgrow in overhead power line
inspections as they detect problems and provide affordable, safe, and precise results. They spark a new
revolution in both Communication and Electrical Power Engineering.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a multi-platform UAV system to respect of feasibility and
efficiency. We propose researches and benchmarks on combinational communication systems in
southwest China in order to achieve effective transmission.
Using multi-model analysis and partial comparisons, this paper demonstrates UAVs’ performance in
cooperative inspection tasks, which includes long-distance imaging, short-distance imaging, and
communication relay.
High-quality images/videos accomplished in processing time and on-site transmission to office for
technical analysis. Efficiency also outstood due to the reduction of human laboring, materials, and
power source.
Throughout this study, we acknowledged the multi-platform UAV system’s superiority to
conventional methods and its potential for future study.
