FOLK DANCE

Background Information for Learners

Dance, like all forms of cultural expression, reflects the society in which it exists. By
nature, dance is the expression of emotions, feelings and opinions through the movement and
manipulation of the body. Dance very often finds itself in the form of telling a story or conveying
emotion through choreography, Dougler (1940).
Dance unites the society and provides people’s identity. It is also a form of entertainment,
enjoyment and companionship. Through dance, people understand and learn how other people
live, a mirror that tells the spirit, character, creativity, and artistry of a certain group. According to
Tolentino (2001), the purpose of dance is to portray the culture of a particular region. It may use
any style and form as long as it does not disturb neither compromise the identity of that particular
group. Moreover, it enables the larger community to appreciate the culture.
Folk Dances, indeed, are reflections of the culture. They mirror the customs, traditions,
sentiments, and feelings of folk people.
In Region 02, there are known and published local folk dances that have been handed down
from generation to generation. They follow a fixed pattern and are rich in cultural expressions,
each one distinct from another. These are Jota Cagayana, Jota Isabela, Jota Quirino, Salat Ti
Mais, and Balamban.

Balamban means butterfly. The Balamban is danced in weddings and it leads to a courtship
dance.
This was popular during the close of the 19th century and the arly part of the 20th century.
Dancers are dressed in the traditional costume of the Gaddangs in the old days. The music is on
the ¾ time signiture which composed of 2 parts: Music A and Music B. The counting is 1,2, and
3 to a measure. It is also classified as Festival Dance of the Gaddang lowland Christian of Barangay
Nabbuan, Santiago City
