Ms. Boudreau’s Classroom

May/June 2021

Jack and Annie are heading on an exciting adventure in the Wild West. They will hear
the song of Lonesome Luke and help save wild mustangs. Next, we will prepare for an
adventure in the African Savannah. They will see zebras, wildebeests, giraffes and lions.

As the weather finally gets warmer, please dress your child in layers. The classroom can
get warm during May and June. I recommend continuing to send in a water bottle that can be
refilled in the classroom with your child.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY: Thankful for a Great Year!

Mrs. Pereira and I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for entrusting us with your
children. You were so supportive and patient with all of the remote learning and schedule
changes. In the end, the incredible teamwork paid off and the kids had a great year! I can say
with confidence that our students will soon be successful First Graders! I will miss them! We
will give each other kind waves in the hall next year! Please keep in touch so we can celebrate
all the student and family successes. Have an amazing Summer and warm thoughts to a great
(more normal) school year next year!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FUNDATIONS:

Children continue to practice decoding and fluency skills. In addition, we now are
combining comprehension and decoding skills. Once children are efficient decoders, they can
use some of their working memories to think about what they are reading. Comprehension
questions are asked of students after they decode. Reading levels will be assessed and sent to
next year’s teachers! A writing sample will be sent as well. An assessment of digraphs (ch, sh,
wh, th, ck) was recently completed and the students did very well! I will continue to assess
sight words every other week. End of the year report card assessments and a final DRA
(Developmental Reading Assessment) will be completed before the end of June.

MATH:
During Math, the students are working on how to “decompose” numbers, a highlighted
skill in the Common Core Math standards. Decomposition of numbers is taking a number such
as 6 and realizing 6 is 0+6, 1+5, 2+4, 3+3, 4+2, 5+1, and 6+0. We will practice decomposing
numbers through ten to help children gain a good understanding of how numbers are related.
We are also working on our addition and subtraction facts through 10.

IDEAS FOR HOME:

● Practice measuring distances to common places in your house. For example, how many
kid steps is it from the refrigerator to the sink? How many adult steps? Why is it
different?
● After reading with your child, ask them to retell the story. In addition, ask them
questions like: How do you think (main character) felt at the beginning, middle end?
What would happen if (change something in story)? What might happen next?
● Please remember to review sight words and have your child read daily.
