2 KClO3(s) → 2 KCl(s) + 3 O2(g)

Question 2
At 273 K and 101000 Pa, 6.319 g of a gas occupies 2.00 dm3. Identify this gas.

Question 3
A certain mass of an ideal gas is in a sealed vessel of volume 3.25 dm 3. At a temperature of 25ºC it exerts a
pressure of 101 kPa. What pressure will it exert at 100ºC?

Question 4
An ideal gas occupies a volume of 2.75 dm3 at 290K and 8.7 x 104 Pa. At what temperature will it occupy 3.95
dm3 at 1.01 x 105 Pa?

Question 5
A tank of helium has a volume of 50.0L and is under a pressure of 136.1atm. This gas is allowed to flow into
a blimp until the pressure in the tank drops to 2.722 atm and the pressure in the blimp is 2.04 atm. What will
be the volume of the blimp? Assume the temperature is constant.
Quick Revision
Avogadro's Law: The volume of a gas, at a given temperature and pressure, is directly proportional to the
quantity of gas.
Equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain the same number of moles.
This means the mol ratio of the equation or the stoichiometric ratio of reactants and products automatically
gives the gas volumes ratio of reactants and products provided all the gas volumes are measured at the same
temperature and pressure.

Question 6
When 100 cm3 of hydrogen bromide reacts with 80 cm3 of ammonia, a white solid is formed and some gas is
left over. What gas and how much of it is left over? NH3(g) + HBr(g) → NH4Br(s)

Question 7
100 cm3 of methane was reacted with 500 cm3 of oxygen. What is the total volume of all gases at the end, and
indicate how much there is of each gas? CH4(g) + 2 O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2 H2O(l)

Question 8
If 4 dm3 of hydrogen sulphide is burned in 10 dm3 of oxygen, what is the final volume of the mixture?
2 H2S(g) + 3 O2(g) → 2 H2O(g) + 2 SO2(g)

Question 9
10 cm3 of a hydrocarbon, CxHy, were exploded with an excess of oxygen. There was a contraction in volume
of 30 cm3. When the products were treated with sodium hydroxide (which reacts with carbon dioxide), there
was a further contraction of 30 cm3. Deduce the formula of the hydrocarbon, given that all volumes were
measured under the same conditions.

Question 10
A 10.73g sample of PCl5 is placed in a 4.00L flask at 200°C.
a) What is the initial pressure of the flask before any reaction takes place?
b) PCl5 dissociates according to the equation: PCl5(g) → PCl3(g) + Cl2(g). If half the total number of moles of
PCl5(g) dissociates and the observed pressure is 1.25atm, what is the partial pressure of Cl2(g)?

Question 11
Three 1.00 L flasks at 25°C and 101.3 kPa pressure contain: CH4(flask A), CO2(flask B) and NH3(flask C).
Which flask contains 0.041 mol of gas?

Question 12
20.0 g each of helium and an unknown diatomic gas are combined in a 1500. mL container. If the
temperature is 298 K, and the pressure inside is 86.11 atm, what is the unknown gas?

Question 13
A sample of gas (1.90 mol) is in a flask at 21.0 °C and 697.0 mm Hg. The flask is now opened and more gas
is added to the flask. The new pressure is 795.0 mmHg and the temperature is now 26°C. How many moles
of gas are now in the flask?
Question 14
A stainless steel tank has a volume of 25 L. When the tank held 15.4 moles of helium, the pressure of the
gas was 0.987 atm. The tank developed a small leak and lost 4.2 moles of gas. If the temperature remained
unchanged, what was the pressure in the tank after the loss?

Question 15
Sulfur trioxide, SO3, is produced in enormous quantities each year for use in the synthesis of sulfuric acid.
What volume of O2(g) at 350°C and a pressure of 5.25 atm is needed to completely convert 5.00 g of sulfur
dioxide to sulfur trioxide?
SO2(g) + O2(g) → SO3(g)

Question 16
Ammonia reacts with O2 to form either NO(g) according to the equation below.
NH3(g) + O2(g) → NO(g) + H2O(g)
If 23g of Ammonia gas is injected into a 5L container with 18g pure oxygen gas at 35°C. Calculate the
change in pressure in the container.
